      That is a very nice thing to say to him, but he is unlikely to come back. Games Workshop made it policy to sue the heck out of any more fan animations if they caught wind of em, and bury the party in legal fees. That is why this all happened.
      That said keep your ears out for his new work! Astral Gods is the working title, I believe. Its still in the lore building/drawing phase but it is meant to be of a similar scale to 40k, with a focus on a single set of worlds where multiple faction interactions took place.
      Same attention to detail, same love for complex and lore rich environments.

      I mean I think it's less criticism and more that he spent an insane amount of time and effort on this only to be faced with unfavourable comparison's to other animations like Astartes. Which is understandable in that I know any such comparison being made in a negative manner when you invested so much time in something is disparaging to say the least. I've never seen a legitimate criticism honestly, it's always been "but the animation isn't like Astartes" while it is perfectly serviceable for the scope of this animation and looks more than good enough.
      That being said anyone who compared this with Astartes is incredibly stupid, they are different projects, with a different scope. Astartes is more about a relatively short action sequence, Death of Hope is a longer attempt at world building, which it does very well.

    10:09 Wow. I was already impressed with the amount of work that you put into a closure video, splicing together partial scenes with reconstructions of storyboards, but that apartment cross-section is...gorgeous. Like, if I saw that picture with no knowledge that there was any other work that went into anything alongside it (aside from it being 40k), I would be chomping at the bit to see what else you had done. Not only is the artwork great looking, but there's so much detail that keeps piling on the longer I look at it. There are dozens of nightmarishly detailed stories happening simultaneously, and this is just one slice of rooms in one building in one city on a _planet_ that's being similarly invaded.
    You've got the child peering around the corner only to find the _thing_ clinging to the wall staring back. The guy in his chair that clearly took his own life. The gibbering lesser-demons in the stairwells, gleefully brandishing severed limbs. The guy on the top floor still trying to reach the lift controls even as a daemon belches fire/acid/something onto him. The proto-raptor holding the half-corpse of an Ultramarine as he perches outside on a gargoyle, staring through a window even as a daemon below is swatting at the dangling corpse. A hellblade impaling not only a man, but the floor and ceiling beneath him, and (as you both depict and describe) the blood dripping down on a woman clutching her baby as cultists enter the apartment.
    Two of my favorite points are on opposite ends of the 'hope' spectrum. There's the mysterious gunslinger drawing a bead on the cultists on their way to the mother and child, which feels a hell of a lot more dynamic for the way you drew the second cultist actually turning to face him. I have no idea who this man is or what he intends, but contrary to the state of things, the title, and...well, what we know happens to the mother and child from part 1, it makes the horror so much more horrifying/horrific when we get glimmers of hope like that. On the opposite side of the 'hope' spectrum, the bottom right of the drawing has a family portrait with _just_ enough detail to make the silhouettes of a father, mother, and child clear. The fact that this is the same room as a Chaos ritual circle is bad enough. The fact that the next room has a dismembered man, a soon-to-be-dead woman, and something bloody and child-sized under a sheet is worse.
    On a broader note, I had a question about the story structure. What was your reasoning for Part 2 being a flashback? The main detail that got me wondering was about Samantha's fate. I remembered her in the trailers, so it was a punch in the gut to see what became of her and the child she was so desperate to save, but that's not a bad payoff. It worked perfectly fine as something bleak and horrifying even if you hadn't seen the trailers, and it was made all the worse if you had. Both times, you built the reveal from the silhouette of a woman cradling her child that's obscured by the forcefield, and then showed the extent of her (well, their) condition.
    But after watching this video and learning that Samantha was practically our PoV character for Part 2, I wasn't sure what the reasoning was to show so early how both she and Cestus wind up. At first I thought that maybe her reasoning for trying to get home was going to be a reveal once she made it, but you seemed pretty up-front with both the child's name in Part 1 and her reasoning for why she wants to get home here.
    Pretty small in the grand scheme of things, but I was curious for your thoughts on this.

    • @marklouisspark
      @marklouisspark  2 года назад +5

      Hey man appreciate you took the time for such a lengthy comment!
      The reasoning for part 1 being the end fate compared to part 2 was to get people to clutch onto hope for her for the rest of the story when she isn't mutated, always believing she's gonna make it but always knowing she won't. She comes across many moments where you think this is it for her, but it always continues until what happens really happens. Seeing the nightmare of their future shows for the rest of the story what they are fighting against and how important it is that they win.

    • @electricbayonet2
      @electricbayonet2 2 года назад +3

      @@marklouisspark No worries, bro. Hell of a lot less effort than it took for you to do Part 1, its trailers, and this video.
      Hmm...I'm not sure about that. I thought one of the grand reveals might have been not just about the exact identity, but also the awful state of the mother and child in Part 1. A void-shield obscuring them to the point where we can't discern physical features, or even truly confirm if the child is alive? Good. All that, and also the mother is rocking her child back and forth, pleading for him to wake up as she tries to reassure him that the 'bad people' are gone? Holy shit, _better!_
      Seeing that Samantha and Cestus were captured by the Word Bearers is horrifying enough. Having the additional implication that Cestus might not actually still be alive? That's something else. That's a level of fundamental dread that would have us on the edge of our seats through Part 2. Even if Samantha finds him safe and sound, what does that mean between that point and her capture? Does he die? Is he alive, and she's just scared for his wellbeing? Is the infant-sized bundle she's holding actually Cestus, or is there some Chaos deception afoot?
      But...the weird part is not only for us to see outright that Cestus is just a lifeless tumor, but also to hear Samantha start screaming profanity at him as she shakes him like a Polaroid.
      In retrospect, I'm Monday morning quarterbacking a storyline that was probably years in the making. I just figured that if we're going off the title, it seemed like we'd be seeing the _death_ of hope instead of hope already being dead.
      Bleh. Sorry for another bigpost.

      "You've got the child peering around the corner only to find the thing clinging to the wall staring back. The guy in his chair that clearly took his own life." Looking closer at that I think the poor bstard was killed by the demon in the corridor who punched it's spiked appendage / fist through the wall and through his skull as he was in his chair, possibly dozing.

Mass market is a destructive force that we see with humans and how they treat nature, why would we think it would be good for everything. IPs are not essential to us as food but it is a resource for the mind and soul... And that is where they hit us.

      Reading something like this is sad, I was never really into 40k. Tabletop was way too expensive for my family, and I didn't really have a gaming PC til much later and enjoyed DoW, but by that time I was already into Star Wars, Dune, Red Rising (Book Series), et.
      If one thing I learned when Disney bought out Star Wars and basically gutted support to everything I loved about that franchise with the EU. Is that we can get lost in our entitlement of what should be, could be, and we wish to remain "Ours". When I found myself doing that, I realized that I gave those people I hated for mauling something I cared so much about sooo much power over me, that they could take away and taint something I was so passionate about and throw that passion by the way for a new era of fans or new direction.
      I think it's important to take back control, love the things that you loved, don't let anyone take that away. They can never take away the flame of the past if you let them. With all that being said, as a new WH fan. I could care less about what GW does or doesn't do, because there is already so much there that's inspired people for decades. I get it though, eating a 5 course meal and then having it salted by the chief is devastating, but for me WH 40K is like mana from the heavens... It's just so much better off then most current popular sci fi universes out there, and one of the only surviving ones.

    Yeah... I'm not rushing to buy GW-licensed products after hearing this. A few PS4 games will have to wait.
    Fan art needs to be acknowledged as "homage" and "art."

    Yo MLS, Thank you. This is a great Christmas treat. Honestly in my opinion your vision and hard work is some of the best 30k/40k grim dark work that has been created and a shame it will never be completed. It must not have been easy. The fact that you didn't walk away from the many fans shows your character and I wish you success in your future projects and in life. Thank you again for your many hours of hard work. Have a pleasant holiday season. From my family to yours. Cheers.

    I'm sorry all these things happened, your work, attention to detail (and then some!) and just your sheer love for the universe showed throughout.
    But I also totally get why your stance on GW and the universe has changed so much, it's next to impossible to not feel the same especially if you've been a lover of the franchises for so long.
    I wish you the best in your future endeavours man, I know you're going to absolutely crush them too :)

    THANK YOU for sharing this. It’s really just a tease to see a couple trailers and the very few opening moments to what had been planned to be something much greater. So having these sort of ‘screen play’ dialogs is really the answers to my endless begging for so much more!! Is this type of work only as easy as authoring the armor pieces and weapons, and 3-D rendering those great numerous archways, in such a way so as that the earlier developed models only need be collaged together and then joints and nodes assigned and set to be pivot points? I don’t know which looks like more fun, designing these endless cathedral
    Like halls, or building up a character and assigning the ranges and the limits to his movements? It is So cool that you’ve gone so far as you already have!!!! GLORIOUS IMAGERY!!
