- 1:5 Scale Byron B-29 - The worlds Largest RC Plane
Wingspan: 339"
Length: 237.6
Weight: 400 lbs
Engines: 4 100cc Qudra
The worlds largest rc plane, the Byron 1:5 Scale B-29. During a flight, it crashed into the tops of a set of tree's in Ida Grove. It was later repaired and continued flying with the Expo and Striking Back. Later when Byron sold the Expo to the City of Ankeny, it continued flying at the new location. Today, it still exists and is located at the Iowa Aviation Heritage Museum, about 500 yards north of where the Expo site was held at the Ankeny Airport.

It's really not their fault, chain saw engines are just naturally attracted to trees.
LMAO
Did I laugh or what 😂...at your comment, not their misadventure 😨
Who wood a thunk it?
Qudra engines where never used as a chain saw engine you are a fucking moron
That ain't right 😅😅😅😅
“BETTER GET ON THAT RUDDER!!!!”, the armchair pilot exclaimed
I didn't know whether to give a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down what a shame. My dad was the pilot of the B-29 back in 1949
What a shame :(
It looks like it was underpowered. Good to know that it was possible to repair that beauty !!!
I was there when this plane crashed, this thing was absolutely huge! This video was taken in the late 80's, so the technology for RC's was nothing like it is now. This plane was an amazing feat back then!!
I'm pretty sure I was there when this went down in front of a packed house at an Grove show in the early 90s. It stalled and sank behind the trees. I can still picture the look on the pilot's face as he walked away. He looked really sad. Who wouldn't? Good to hear it still exists somewhere.
What a beautiful plane ,my heart goes out to the pilot and or the owner.I'm glad it was repaired and flew again .
You gotta figure that once these RC planes get to a certain size, they may as well be the real thing. So cool.
I have always known about what happened but this is the first time I have saw the video. I am the current President of the Iowa Aviation Heritage Museum. We had the opportunity to acquire the Aircraft from the Aviation Expo when they folded and we did not want them to disappear. They are displayed proudly in ou4r Museum at the Ankeny Regional Airport. We will never fly these aircraft again as they are now irreplaceable. Please come out to the museum and see these Aircraft.
I was there when it happened....their flying superman flew before that....everyone figured there was kryptonite that brought the plane down....its sad that they dont have the event anymore....was sooooo cool
I think if more people would have been telling the pilot what to do he would have made it.
I was at this show when this happened. I was just a kid but I remember it happening and then a rc Superman went up "to save the day" and it to crashed too lol
Thunder Truck what year was this?
I was there. It was a radio issue. Sick feeling watching it hit the trees. I knew all the guys at Byrons. Sad day.
These planes are really nice & lots of fun watching them crash...😆
Now THAT'S a giant RC model....this video made my day, thanks for sharing.
That's pretty incredible work, gents. I had no idea this scale of RC planes was even possible. Phenomenal! Thanks for posting the vids of this thing flying, too.
I was there for that when I was 16. Got to watch them extract it from the tree with a cherry picker and a sling. Sad to watch the bomb bay doors crush under its weight in the sling. Regardless the show went on! The scale nuke explosion was intense and it was cool to be able to meet the men who flew the Enola Gay on this mission.
I got to see that plane fly long time ago when Byron was still in Iowa. Great show. Sorry to see it crash.
It was repaired. it is sitting in the Iowa Aviation Museum in Ankeny, Iowa at the airport, across the street from Casey's Headquarters. It can be gone over, updated, and flown again right now if they wanted to.
At the '82 Ida Grove Byron meet, I saw another model of a B-29 crash that seemed to shake the ground from some distance. It had successfully launched a rocket model X-1 but seemed to slip off due a high bank angle. Many could be heard to groan when the big airplane went in.
that was such a fun event to attend..my jaw dropped when I watched that monster crash..I wish they still put on that show.
all ya need is a piloting leprechaun and you're set
Awesome model, glad to see it was repaired and flown again.
Very entertaining indeed, gotta luv the 'peanut' gallery in the background though...lol
Gee guys, just a little bigger and you could have ridden it!
Glad to hear it's still around. As crashes go, that was pretty mild. When I heard that engine cut out, I was afraid it would roll right over. Good job getting it as far as you did.
WOW! Flash back, number of years ago my cousin talked me into going to Ida Grove.. Bought a tent and put in on the east end of the community airport.. Both the police and a Trustee said it was fine.. Just not on center line.. Saw the same plane when it was the first flight I believe.. Just got off a couple of feet and nevermore.. Settled down somewhere to the east.. When three years running, great show.. Was there when Offutt had an airshow, returned to Ida Grove disappointed because you could barely see the Tora Tora Tora planes up close.. Next day at the community airport, guess what the group landed right in front of me... Goosebumps prevailed..
I saw that happen. I was at that show. Sad. The airshow Byron put on was fantastic.
What an epic model from way back when. Glad it was rebuilt.
Wow - 1:5 scale !! Sad it went down. Hope it was repaired.
I reviewed this video several times. The pilot made a critical error. At the moment he sensed the problem, he should've turned right and headed straight for the runway. He still had altitude and airspeed to help him do that. Instead he turned left which led him further away from the airfield and consequently he used up his airspeed and altitude trying to make it back. There's a harsh lesson here. As an rc pilot, you gotta be ready for a loss of power anytime. You gotta think fast for a solution to bring your bird back to you. It takes lots of practice to become comfortable with this kind of crisis. It's an important skill to have. Especially when flying these big beautiful planes. This is my humble opinion.
Was the damage very extensive to this beautiful & amazing B-29 when it crashed into the trees. And, did it lose an engine before the crash? I assume it's 3 engine capability with gears down is not very good, am I correct? If so, that seems somewhat odd to have a 4 engine bird with no climb on 3 engines. But, I could be wrong, that's just the configuration the B-29 appeared to be in before it hit the trees.
still you all did an awsome job on the aircraft , she is beutifull and thank you for the video
I love going to War birds over Delaware every year to watch these giant war birds fly.. better than a real air show if you ask me
Wow. I was there for that. I went down to the trees and watched them pull it out of the trees.
Just how many "world's largest R/C planes" are there?
+comet3bc13 unless you are over the age of 30, this is before you were born.
+comet3bc13 4 largest? Are they all the exact same size or what?
+Richard Darlington I started building and flying model airplanes in 1979 so, yeah, I'm over the age of 30!
+comet3bc13 Wow! really?! You gotta bridge you want to sell me? Maybe some beachfront property in Kansas?
That's where they get the water....
To be honest it is the second largest RC-plane ever build. It sure is the largest rc-plane that is stil flying :D
ida grove iowa.. never had a chance to go there and watch the rc show they did ,but man i bet it was great in person..
28' wingspan? there were fighters in the First World War with shorter spans than that ... this plane was a joy to watch! i'm not normally inclined to watch RCMs on here but this time i made an exception: beautiful aircraft, skillfully flown; what can i say? it was beautiful!
Truly beautiful model, even sounded lovely. The man hours of work that must have gone into it. Very glad to hear it was restored. Are there any other flights of this wonderful model on youtube?
My grandad was in the same squadron as the Enola Gay. His plane was called " Earthquake Magoon" and his name was in the hat that they chose the crew from to go on the big trip. I have to say I love this video but I wish those motors were four strokes. The sound would've been so much better. Thanks for the post👍.
Interesting you should mention that. They did draw lots, so to speak, for the crews for those missions, which is how it ended up that the bomber that hit Nagasaki, called "Bock's Car", after it's pilot, was flown by another crew for that mission, while Bock and his crew flew the chase plane. The planes had been extensively modified for the mission, so they switched planes because of the draw from the hat. So if your grandfather had drawn that mission, he wouldn't have flown his own plane, he would have flown one of the same planes that actually went, since they were the only ones equipped to carry the bombs. If I'm not mistaken, that was the 509th Bombardment Group.
My uncle built the Enola Gay in Omaha. It was completed then brought back in and stripped of anything they didn't need for the mission. They had no clue why they were stripping it. They assumed they were making some sort of drone.
The Guy with the "stone washed jeans" brought 1989 bad luck.
I will gladly chip in $500 if the real owner is going to rebuild, no BS if I can make sure I'm dealing with him I'll donate. I live in a nursing home and videos like this make my day,
What they don't is that Bryon was a RC plane kit manufacturer and this was for promotion. It was really a great place to fly. After the first or second year you had to fly a 1/4 scale or larger plane. They also used to fly a very large SR71 at the show. They had a couple of very large C47's and B25's that flew as part of the striking back show.
Thats realy big! Nice Airplain!
Good Pilot, you did as much as any expert advance pilot can do. Sorry for you lost, hope you can rebuilt this beauty.
A real beauty of a plane.
It's nice to see someone took the extra effort to build a B-29 that looks true to the design. I don't understand why the builders of the other RC B-29s didn't take the time to scan from a book or download top and side view images and enlarge them to scale to get the true curves and lines of the tail and wings. Mac Hodge's "B-29" does a cool air show, but it's an abomination in shape and actually looks laughable. It's like he built his "kinda looks like a B-29" from memory. When I built a 4' B-17 from scratch I bought the 1/48th scale Monogram plastic kit to work from to get all the curves right.
And one night every lawn mower engine on the block mysteriously dissapeared.
Gorgeous plane. I swear it was 1976 and I saw a real B-29 flying in Delaware. (I was 4 so cannot be certain) I know I felt the engines in my chest.
that is just simply awe inspiring and amazing. completely out of my league and financial range.
people may all your take off's be uneventful and your landings smooth and straight.
That could take the fun out of the day. Glad it wasn't hurt too badly.
Many tears in this hobby, much respect for the people who participate at all levels.
Title should be: "Large under-powered B-29 sinks out of sight!"
wasnt under powered. had a failure and couldnt keep altitude after that
what on earth gives the impression that it is under powered? obviously you don't know very much about aircraft.....
What a magnificent model. I wish I could be there to see it fly !!!
This is amazing...It sounds just like the real thing. I dont know how they were able to do that. It's a real distinct sound.
Lol what do u mean it sounds like the real thing 🤔 🤣 sounded like a chainsaw/weedeater
These things just keep getting bigger and bigger, at this point why not just build a real one and fly around in it lmao
I saw this bird fly twice. The second time, when it took off, it left it's nose gear on the runway. When they landed it, they set her down on the main gears, As is was slowing down the steered it to the left, and set the nose down on the grass perfectly! I don't think there was any damage at all.
Beautiful take-off.
Questions to consider:
1. Why do we travel far? Has it become senseless?
2. Has the risk of death been examined?
3. Has the human-being become less rational over senselessness and war?
4. Does the real question here lie in the problem with aerial travel? Meaning environment and risk of danger.
5. Does transportation of resources that's unneeded mean we're getting too careless?
I was born in Wichita, loved airplanes since childhood, built many models and won a scale contest in the early '80s but the questions such as yours began to surface early in the '90s and I've become a critic of commercial aviation for it's waste and dragging some people into thinking it's a given by nature. It, to me, is now a sad venture. Also, I've worked in an aircraft factory and known many folks who earned their livelihoods and the work environment is not enjoyable or healthy but the industry is huge and pays well generally.
GREAT job men.
i never got to make it out to the mini byron airport :( but i do have a vid from there, back in 1987 :) watch it all the time !!
I have a R/C model of "OLD 909" B-17G, it has a 63" wingspan & its currently hanging from the ceiling in my Man Cave suspended by 20 lb Trilene Big Game Fishing Line (that doesn't break) its on static display and it won't be flown due to lack of flying multi engine aircraft and lack of knowledge of degree of flaps used, just have it to admire
and remember the History of this one of kind aircraft that completed 140 missions over Nazi occupied Germany, 16 of those were into Berlin and returning home without a single casualty or abort, but to especially remember those lives lost at Bradley Airport 2019 in Connecticut when the Real "909" was Lost
This is how we learn....Good luck
one of the best
Awesome. Would love to see this someday.
"Lost it". What was lost? Did engines quit? Was radio lost and regained? What was the cause of the crash?
If everyone was like cara.......... we would still be living in the stone age.
SO Sorry Guys, that was NOT 10 years ago, I was there, and it was 1991! Also, that week we lost a member of the "Tora Tora Tora" team! I was damn near killed by an out of control Viper that left a huge dent in the aluminium seating Grand stand, showering some spectators with fibre glass and balsa fragments! Luckily, the engine stayed low!
Great plane !!!
INCREDIBLE
AMAZING SOUND!!! GREAT!!
If ignorance is bliss, he's one happy camper.
Late in seeing and replying but what was the final decision as to the cause of the crash?
Was it engine related, as in underpowered?
Sorry for the crash mishap but happy to learn it eventually was put back together.
Overnout
That thing looks big enough to carry a person!
I saw this plane in Ida grove when the first year they rolled it out and did some runs up and down the runway. The next year I saw it make it's inaugural flight and then saw it a couple years later at the expo. Now the expo is a pile of weeds south of the airport.
you should do your math. the real b-29 superfortress had a wingspan of 141' 3". This is a wingspan of 28' 4"... That's 1/5 scale. cheerios
Just out of intrest was a Spektrum Tx & Rx being used? Ive had a few brown outs with my dx8 and receiver and things like receivers being used next to carbon fibre have been blamed
What year was this video shot? And we thought drones were new our grandparents were flying them
That was impressive and I hate seeing a loss like this. I not only don't have the cash but I don't have thing(s) I would need. :-)
POWER, POWER, POWER POWER POWER ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
beautiful work......broke MY heart to see it crash, I can only imagine how it must have felt.....I definately would have cracked open a bottle of the hard stuff........who am I kidding I would have cracked it open anyway but there would have been some bubbly too. Sorry to see such a sweet plane go down but good to read it was restored. Thanks for sharing
I'll swear as a witness, the tree reached out and grabbed that airplane. Tree's fault.
I will have to go check this out since I live like an hour away
Proper engines and engine sounds for once! :D
Even though it crashed it still is awesome that it really flies. I bet it took a lot of man hours to create. Sorry it crashed.
the wing height of the b-29 from the ground is 9-10 feet. 1/5 scale of 9-10 feet is 21"- 24".. Average person height, 24" is apx 3" above the knee cap. In the video, the wing at outboard engines, about 3" of above the knee cap. Looks accurate there. Super scale? No, this is exact scale. But if you want to go measure it, it's at the Iowa aviation Heritage museum at the airport in Ankeny, Iowa. Looks pretty scale to me, I see it often.
I have built these A/C, even building drones for camera land surveys and helping redesign military target drones and assisting in flying them and training crews. They may claim $100,000 value by estimating how much it would have cost if they had been charging for their building time (most of the builders, if not all of them, were unpaid volunteers). But, their actual material cost was about $14,000.00, radios, engines and all. -cont-
three words ya dont wanna hear, " i lost it" pucker factor times 10
wow amazing scale
Man, the responses on this site are from grown men? I thought this hobby contained people with skills that simply wanted to have fun building and flying these special aircraft, but talk about petty bickering and bad mouthing, no different than jocks bashing each other while hiding behind their keyboards. But, I'll wager most of the immature dickheads are trolls from the outside. I'm glad the big bird soft landed in the trees and wasn't badly damaged. I think anyone interested in B29s must have been really depressed after watching that documentary of an amazing team of individuals that salvaged and restored to flying condition a B29 that crash landed on a dry lake bed, or seasonal lake depending, only to watch it burn to the ground while taxing to fly out of there. Apparently a gas can in the back bounced around and leaked it's contents which came into contact with a heat source. That plane was just a few minutes from going airborne, what a rotten shame, I can't imagine many of them left, someone here would know the number.
its the hormones in the food. They cry like little junior high school girls
Yeah, saw this one myself, they said a petrol generator used as a temporary apu took a tumble and up it all went. What a disaster, after all that hard work and a shit tonne of money it burns to the ground as they all watch on. They had to transport new engines and all sorts of exotic shit out to the middle of nowhere just to bring it up to standards. It obviously didn't want to leave its grave site.
@@Ihaveabigbrownbear Oh shut the fuck up!
Yeah that was the Kee bird. Otherwise known as B29 frozen in time. Sad ending after all the work they did to bring her home.
It might help to know that you're dealing with human beings and all their foibles.
Oh damn! I would like to see the crash site too. :D
magnifique b29 rc ;)
what happened? did it get out of range or did a couple of the motors die?
awesome!!!!
The sad part about it, the pilot tried is best to bring it back.
Nice toy on the extreme end of the scale, glad it was repaired. However, there's no way I'd be dressed in a 'real' pilots uniform flying anything other than a 'real' plane.
For showing demonstration
Oh, you have your own 1/5 scale aircraft?
Sounds like it since you know soo much about what can fly and what cant. I wonder if yours can do a corkscrew.
Little boys with there big toys. :)
Dude this remember me the airfrance crash that the plane just don't let the pilot speed it up while land,so it crashed on a forest.R.I.P
And that's what you get for flying fortresses too big to fly over forests!☺️
I am not arguing about the dimensions of this plane nor if it's scale or not. I am giving the facts that if it's 1/5 scale, everything is 20% of the original.
@MLCallison This is a video I believe of the # 2 built of the 1/5th Scale B-29 Aircraft that Byron Originals built. The B-29 in the Museum is parts of # 2 and # 3 that was to be built put together to make # 2 flyable again. Please if anyone knows different please let me know. We would like to acquire any information and all videos of the Byron Originals to be able to show at the museum.
