I was hoping to see little RC scale ambulances and fire trucks go racing into the picture moments after the crash. For lack of comprehensive safety systems, I deducted one star.
It has been a long time since my dad talked about his days in the B-17 but if my memory serves me, the ball turret was retracted during takeoff and landing, and then extended during the flight. What brought it too mind is that I noticed that in the grass, it is dragging the ground with makes takeoffs and landings more difficult.
Having flown my own 10ft span B-17 and then a 17 feet span version, I feel I can speak with some authority on the subject. Regardless of what was mixed with what, both B-17's flying here are tail heavy. You can tell by the way they both leap into the air and that they are pitch unstable in flight and final approach. 5 to 10 pounds of lead in the nose would transform them both, speaking from experience. I had around 15 pounds in my 1/6 scale version and it was rock solid. Steve
As a commercial airline passenger, I am really glad to know that professionals in the airline industry take crashes as seriously as you and jeffquesenberry do.
Thanks for the positive comments. I was not the pilot, I shot the video. I know the pilot and he is excellent. The crash was due to a wrong setting on his transmitter.
...I didn't want to rub salt in the wounds, but yes, many of the most meticulous builders I've known were crazy talented, at BUILDING. But often, they're just not very good at flying. I've been asked to set up, maiden and properly trim many amazing models for people just like that. I feel lucky and honored they trust me. They're often "old school" guys and are barely comfortable setting up their radios with anything beyond dual rates. You can't imagine how many weren't knowledgeable or were straight up afraid about programming in a bit of "Expo" to help tame their models.
It's important to get the tail up and fuse. level during a takeoff run. Seen so many try and take off full throttle with the tail planted / stick pulled back.
First attempt looked like he came in way too hot, and caught a really bad down draft. Second looked a lot better, but still pretty fast landing speed... Glad to see the big girl was able to get fixed back up and fly again.
why don't they put something in the planes that will ignite on impact. crashes don't look very real with on fire or thick black smoke. i'd give this crash a 2 and thumbs down
Looks great ! Excellent !! Wing loading and the approach speed looks just right for this plane. The only problem is the absence of flaps, which are essential for this kind of & scale of planes.
u put the same comment on anther video...that you're bro died the same way......1st you said that he died from a A-10 Warthog burning when taking off.....now you're saying that he died from a B-17 crash.....you just want respect
I have scratchbuilt many twins and a tri and one B-17, and all of them especially the warbirds come in heavy and hot or they don't make it. When I scaled down the B-17 it came in just like yours did, Nose heavy and a litlle wobbley. Excellent job of flying and building it. Landing warbirds is a always a learning process. Nobody understands how heavy and difficult these are to fly let alone land. Keep up the good work.
easier to take of and land... even on full sized airplanes it is the case the wheels slid a little bit on the grass ... that makes it easier to handle the plane on the ground... I remember well when i flew full size
DIOSpeedDemon what the hell does that have to do with this model and the runway afforded to it ten feet away? Back in WW2 they didn't have PCs and mobile phones either, what's your freaking point?
This was obviously Enemy Sabotage. Security needs to be super tight at these launching and all attendees MUST Recite ALL the NFL and AFL football teams to be let in. An enemy German agent would only know the European soccer teams , which aint real sport any way....Congress needs to investigate and subpoena every 60 foot tall, pilot, mechanics, ground crew, hot dog vendors, t-shirts sales associates, and ANY one dressed European. THis is War and this is SERIOUS folks..."Lose Lips; Sink Ships"...
Brian E. Scott you can see slightly windy conditions, but possibly this was a 1st flight. slight dip in power and descend to fast angle. why are you bashing?
In the mid-1970s a group of RC guys built and flew a B-17 about the size of the ones in this video. The RC field was about a half mile from a small airfield used by private planes in Southern Cal. A couple of private pilots were landing and saw the B-17 and freaked out, thinking it was the real thing. A complaint was filed with the FAA, and RC planes of that size were banned from the area. True story.
Sad crash but I will never forget the P-51 Mustang I saw crash back in 1976. It was a beautiful plane and never should have been entered into the Hands Off contest. He just got it flying straight and level, handed off the controls and the plane headed almost straight down. He grabbed back his controls but it couldn't be controlled. Full power hit across the field. He walked over there and came back with a hand full of parts. It was a plowed field and we could see the tear streaks down his face.
I was an R/C builder and flyer for many years. This is why I would never fly anything this lovely. The crash would be soul crushing (for a few minutes anyway).
With the way that the plane was tilting left and right on the way down, it makes me wonder if the pilot was fighting winds and just simply never noticed that the plane was at that angle
Very suspenseful near the end, I wasn't sure if he was going to crash it again. Had my fingers crossed. Very nice plane, glad you got it back together and had a successful flight.
@railnwings I thought that was suspicious, the way he smoothly flew into the ground... great landing the second time, though! Thanks for showing us that!
I'm not a flyer or a RC flyer for that matter, however I do love planes. During the crash is that what a stall looks like? He seemed like he backed off the power quite a bit coming in. B-17's have always been my favorite plane since I was a kid.. these really are nice.
I use to run a paintball field years ago. About 1/2-3/4 mile down the road over another field, there was a small model aircraft field like this where people flow those all the time. Every few weeks we would see one go down in the field, and you could hear the loudest "FUUUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKK!!!!!" ever 2 seconds afterwards.
That was the best landing i'v ever seen! I liked the way you made it come and and down like a real plane! I have one my self, its Boeing 747 its already 2 years old a big bigger then the B 17. I have two Hornet planes and one bomber, I always forget the bomber planes name! I had a huge accident with the bomber, but I repaired it in about 5 months.
4 engine planes seem like an exercise in futility, but god bless those that accept the challenge. I was very impressed with flying quality of this one, good stick and rudder skills on behalf of the pilot! Normally, multi-engine RC aircraft are seen slipping all over the sky in quite uncoordinated turns.
My father was a waist gunner in a B17 in WWII. His plane was shot down outside of Berlin in March 1944l He parachuted out and spent the rest of the war in a Stalag.
Still looks like the actual R/C pilot is a little sketchy on his landings, at least with this plane. I think I would probably practice on a simulator a little more with the wind set to crazy. Once I got that down perfect, then and only then, I would fly the real deal. That has got to be a very very bad day when he crashed landing the plane after a beautiful long flight. So close, but no cigar. Thanks for posting the video, even though it is probably still tough watching it. Good Luck
It is hard to believe that the US won the war with such small planes.
literal lol
jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzz
It is hard to believe that we had such Small Pilots back then ....
They say the world has gotten smaller :).
+Steve smith Their size may have been small, but their numbers were not.
not a single member of the 10 man lego crew lived.... a sad day..
They were hamsters
And they washed the ball turret gunner out with a hose.
Shut up minecraft lover
You shut up
That’s a lie. Ever step on a lego? Those little dudes are made from diamonds
It looks like 26 missions was too many for the Memphis Belle...
I was hoping to see little RC scale ambulances and fire trucks go racing into the picture moments after the crash. For lack of comprehensive safety systems, I deducted one star.
Doug MacRay
That would of been super cool !!!
XD
I’m converting my lawn mower into a foam truck as we speak

They looked very unrealistic zooming skyward as they did.
As a commercial airline passenger, I am really glad to know that professionals in the airline industry take crashes as seriously as you and jeffquesenberry do.
Salute for making a comeback. Crew of the Memphis Bell would be proud.
Welp, their building skills definitely trump their flying skills.
The sound at 2:57 wasn't the sound of impact, but the sound of the man flying it heart break.
It broke my heart too
ben Rudnick Who got to write all those letters home, the chaplain? Oh the humanity!
+ben Rudnick. ;-;
Admittedly it kind of hurt you can tell someone put a lot of time in that
That's the hobby, you build 'em, fly 'em, fix 'em! Nice job on the modeling.
too bad ... such a nice bird
☆ ★ ☆ R . I . P . ☆ ★ ☆
It repaired tho
Thanks for the positive comments. I was not the pilot, I shot the video. I know the pilot and he is excellent.
The crash was due to a wrong setting on his transmitter.
What was the wrong setting ?
Many good builders can't fly for shit
+Jeff RcRc
Exactly!
You nailed it! Both takeoffs were horrible. The approach on the crashed B-17 was amateur at best.
...I didn't want to rub salt in the wounds, but yes, many of the most meticulous builders I've known were crazy talented, at BUILDING. But often, they're just not very good at flying. That and they can't tune their engines to equal rpms - always gonna screw the landing approach.
can only imagine the work and attention that goes into a plane like that. I was rooting for you on the second landing attempt!! Good job man =D
2nd landing, very sweet and gentle. Well done, sir; and great video. Thanks.
First attempt looked like he came in way too hot, and caught a really bad down draft.
Second looked a lot better, but still pretty fast landing speed...
Glad to see the big girl was able to get fixed back up and fly again.
Crash is at 2:50
thanks tony saved me some time.
why don't they put something in the planes that will ignite on impact. crashes don't look very real with on fire or thick black smoke. i'd give this crash a 2 and thumbs down
Looks great ! Excellent !!
Wing loading and the approach speed looks just right for this plane.
The only problem is the absence of flaps, which are essential for this kind of & scale of planes.
A great story and two great scale planes.
Nice work!
Knowing the B-17, it probably could still fly. I hope the pilots survived. My brother died the exact same way. Scary.
***** I guess you don't get it. I have to say this, my other brother died after replying to someone who also said he did not make sense. Scary.
trololol
How old was your brother wen he died
u put the same comment on anther video...that you're bro died the same way......1st you said that he died from a A-10 Warthog burning when taking off.....now you're saying that he died from a B-17 crash.....you just want respect
hampe947
or maybe he just have... sorry, had a shitload of brothers
Probably too much flak damage.
I applauded the safe landings. Thanks for posting. Love this.
I can imagine what the pilot said to himself after he landed : " I GOT YOU BACK " , with a super big smile on his face , I know the feeling
MAY DAY! MAY DAY! I'M GOIN DOWN!
All that time, care and attention to detail.... No scale take offs... sigh.
I have scratchbuilt many twins and a tri and one B-17, and all of them especially the warbirds come in heavy and hot or they don't make it. those are some awesome models. and im glad to see that you got the one back up in the air.
Keep Flying.
I hate when that ground comes out of no where
tyler bonser me to dude
What is the current status of these planes, please? I hope that they are still flying.
They are still flying.
railnwings
Fantastic... a buddy and I are looking at building the 1/6 scale version...nice job on the rebuild.
CURRENT STATUS: One plane made it safely thru the German Flac. The other suffered an extreme case of GROUND POISONING...
Dat Guy Does Stuff he means ww||
The unmistakable sound of those beat frequencies going on between those engines.
Beautiful plane and I'm glad you got it back up and running
The way it came apart on impact was incredibly convincing of a real plane crash minus the wood.
Why take off on grass when you have a perfectly usable runway? Never understood that.
easier to take of and land... even on full sized airplanes it is the case
the wheels slid a little bit on the grass ... that makes it easier to handle the plane on the ground...
I remember well when i flew full size
Back in World War 2, they only HAD Grass Runways as Concrete ones had not been invented yet.
DIOSpeedDemon what the hell does that have to do with this model and the runway afforded to it ten feet away? Back in WW2 they didn't have PCs and mobile phones either, what's your freaking point?
i believe they had plenty of concrete landing strips
easier on the undercarriage. Full scale planes like to land on grass too....
Nice one. Amazing what two new wings and a new fuse can do.
She's good to go ! Glad you got that classic up and running
It was her 26th mission... :(
24th
Jollyroger Hobbies 26th

DIOSpeedDemon A B-17 would be just as useful destroyed on the ground than in the air. Shit American engineering as usual, like the M4 Sherman
DIOSpeedDemon love it ...bwhahahahahah
Thats what I like to see. Undaunted by catastrophy, the owner has rebuilt that beautiful model and is brave enough to fly it again. Congratulations!!!
Glad to see it rise from the ashes. I always thought the B17's were one of the best looking planes from WW 2. You have a very nice model.
Very inauthentic take-offs.
His takeoff sucked, and so did his landing.
Brian E. Scott you can see slightly windy conditions, but possibly this was a 1st flight. slight dip in power and descend to fast angle. why are you bashing?
pds tech the plane did the bashing...into the ground.

beautiful models!! fantastic to see them flying!
amazing video. Thanks to that guy for taking the time to repair such a remarkable plane.
Looks better the 2nd time around. Realistic exhaust trails. Beautiful flying site, too. Good job, builder/flyer!
I broke apart almost like a real one would (less dents, less ground being moved, etc, good job on the build
Hope it is still flying!
Sad crash but I will never forget the P-51 Mustang I saw crash back in 1976.
It was a beautiful plane and never should have been entered into the Hands Off contest.

Ah - nice to see that beauty repaired and in flight again ...👌
Beautiful models, a real labor of love.
Oh !!!!!!! Man what a pity, and the one that was picture perfect.
The builder, and owner have my simpathy.
GREAT PLANES!! The crash HURTS!!! But never give up!! GOOD JOB!! ;-)
Wow ! That really hit hard. Amazing it was repaired 👌
Nicely Done!
It sounds just like the real thing! Really cool video, thumbs up!
I was an R/C builder and flyer for many years. This is why I would never fly anything this lovely. The crash would be soul crushing (for a few minutes anyway).
Those are beautifuly made models, but i have to say its always fun watching them crash
With the way that the plane was tilting left and right on the way down, it makes me wonder if the pilot was fighting winds and just simply never noticed that the plane was at that angle
Well, great job in modeling this one, this actually look like a real crash!
My heart sank when that amazingly beautiful historic replica shredded on the runway.
That was one of the most realistic crash site I've seen.
good to see it back in action after the crash
Much happier ending with the second landing - well done on the rebuild.
Very suspenseful near the end, I wasn't sure if he was going to crash it again. Had my fingers crossed. Very nice plane, glad you got it back together and had a successful flight.
Man, the landings are more spectacular than the flights
@railnwings I thought that was suspicious, the way he smoothly flew into the ground... great landing the second time, though! Thanks for showing us that!
Thank you they were great
love the sound it's like a scaled down version of the real thing as well.
Love the happy ending......the rebuild flight.
BEAUTIFUL PLANEs--- the crash is heart-breaking and it's not even MINE!! :)
I like when the wheel rolled around after the crash.
This are so cool - they even leave contrails behind them when flying - just like the real ones.
That last idea sounds like a cool plan :D
one thing in common most R/C crashes occur so quickly , it only takes a split second to descend 30 ft .
I'm not a flyer or a RC flyer for that matter, however I do love planes. During the crash is that what a stall looks like? He seemed like he backed off the power quite a bit coming in. B-17's have always been my favorite plane since I was a kid.. these really are nice.
Sounds great!
@noodl9 I agree completely. A scale take off is more pleasing to see. What I've found is the the good builders are rarely good pilots.
AWESOME!
Those things look like a handfull. Especially during landing.
Nice to see it fixed and a better landing this time
I use to run a paintball field years ago. About 1/2-3/4 mile down the road over another field, there was a small model aircraft field like this where people flow those all the time. This reminds me of that scene from the first part of Memphis Belle when the b-17 crashes
You mean the mascot-doggie whimpering?
I was truly expecting it to crash again on the second part of the video
Beautiful!
i like how this looks so much like the rel thing if it were flying up 10 times higher
the second landing was a definite improvement :)
+hunslet009 I know, it looked like he was coming down way to hard at first, but he managed to pull up and kill that speed just before touching down
I like how the guy yells UP!! before he RE-KITS it !!
LOL
4 engine planes seem like an exercise in futility,
but god bless those that accept the challenge. I was very impressed with flying quality of this one, good stick and rudder skills on behalf of the pilot! Normally, multi-engine RC aircraft are seen slipping all over the sky in quite uncoordinated turns.
very nice efforts friend
Beautiful Aircraft!!!
My father was a waist gunner in a B17 in WWII. His plane was shot down outside of Berlin in March 1944l He parachuted out and spent the rest of the war in a Stalag.
As a builder, i can only imagine the work you put into that, and so sorry that that happened. but its good to rebuild
Good job !!

Nice flying field!

Nice to show that plane back in the air with a smooth landing. I am sure alot of blood and sweat goes into a model of that size n& detail.
@railnwings How did one of them crash? no fuel? attacked? malfunction?
This is why FPV is needed for all RC planes! To help pilot's see where the ground is.
