I am constantly changing/simplifying the holiday season, yearly... Kids have all moved out, parents passed, we don't need gifts anymore.... or cards, gifts for everyone in our lives, stocking stuffers that end up in the Thrift Store Giveaway box! New traditions have sprung up...thoughtful, easier, more about time spent with loved ones/events...Way less baking, stress, events, commitments.... it is a decision...sometimes a hard one...but the reality is we have limited time, money, energy...and Christmas becomes more about stress, than Jesus' Birthday!

Merry Christmas! This was excellent. I love your Bethlehem idea. We do a tradition where we add straw to an antique crib throughout the season. Each straw piece is put there when one does an unknown good deed for another. At Christmas, we lay a baby Jesus in His manger. The point is to pull focus from ourselves to others, as Jesus did when He came to Earth. Merry Christmas!

I have always run around like a mad person trying to make Christmas so magical, traveling to make sure family can see us, etc. I just had a hysterectomy 3 weeks ago, and it has forced me to cut back on things and take it easy. Guess what? Christmas is still happening, even without the "magic," and my kids(all teens) have been so gracious and understanding. It puts things into perspective. Even without it all, Jesus still came to earth as a baby to give us the best gift of all.

So true, Christmas should NEVER be stressful, that is as far from the meaning of it as you can get. To eliminate stress this is what I have done since I got married 30 years ago: Shop ALL year!! I have a gift budget that takes care of birthdays and Christmas so each month I keep watch for special things. Listen to family, they often say how much they would love this or that. Look for things they would never just buy themselves, especially when you are on vacation. People know that when I give them a gift I often have had it months because I was thinking of them, not buying just to buy...that takes away from the spirit of the gift if you feel you HAVE to buy. There will always be one or two people I still shop for late fall or getting stocking stuffers but generally I have all my Christmas gifts by October!!!! Then, there are the Christmas Rules we developed at the start of our marriage and stuck to them fiercely....Rule 1 - once kids are born we will never travel for Christmas, it is their time and will be in their home (yes, some grandparents were upset, sort of). Rule 2 - Only 1 toy may be given per child but you may give them all the clothes and books you want (cuts down clutter, develops a great library, rarely had to buy clothes, LOL!) Rule 3 - just as my Mom did, Christmas Eve we have a snack "party" dinner with veggie tray, cheese and crackers, and freezer to oven appetizers!! The kids loved this and usually ate better and healthier; calms their excitement too!! Rule 4 - church on Christmas Eve. As for decorating, it's a season, an Advent season, so break it down into 4ths. Week one - the outside and cards. Week two-the mantle, foyer, bathrooms, small touches. Week three-the tree and wrapping. Week four- baking and relaxing. Hope this helps someone. Give yourself grace and remember the meaning...Christ came in the simplest of ways, keep it simple and you will be amazed. Spend time before decorating to declutter and clean and you will find you need very little to be beautiful and special. Blessings!

My granddaughters are 15 and 17. We have a new reason to pray in our church this holy season. Our pastor was killed last Friday on a motor bike. Our church is so sad. But we are pulling together. Love your ideas. Last year I got rid of all the Christmas decor I no longer wanted. Put all the rest in see through bins. This year it’s just the two of us so no tree. Only lovely Putz houses on the mantle with faux snow plus a garland below. It gorgeous lit up at night with the fireplace lit.

I remember As a little girl I went to Sunday school and the teacher said to us when we first wake up on Christmas morning before we get out of bed say Happy Birthday to Jesus and thank him. For about 15 years now, our family of 9 kids (growing through marriage and grandbabies) serves on Christmas morning wherever we have the opportunity. Sometimes it has been at homeless shelters serving breakfast, gifting hygiene kits, etc. Recently it’s been making breaking, singing carols with and buying gifts for an assisted living facility. (Matthew 35)

I stopped my decorating 10 days ago, except for the stockings (that's my husband's tradition we must have!) which go up a few days before we celebrate the Nativity of Christ. Orthodox Christians fast for days in preparation for the Holy Day, so all the treats and overindulgences are not much of an issue. Then we celebrate the Feast day for 12 days (yes, the 12 days come after the Holy Day). Best wishes to you and yours, and Merry Christmas.

That's a wonderful idea, I love it!!! Sometimes, women try to recreate that perfect Hallmark Christmas, and then they feel like failures when it wasn't achieved. I think social media makes us feel that way sometimes. I personally know a blogger that even has plastic cookies that she displays and offers them in photographs as her own. Even her children were basically just birthed for photo ops! It's so sad that " her perfect life, " makes other moms feel bad about themselves. So, thank you, for encouraging them that they don't have to be totally incredible!!! Thank you for giving them the thought that they can give themselves permission to forgive themselves and etc!!! I have been struggling this year with having our family Christmas at my home, I am so blessed to have 20 members coming for Christmas Eve, our blessing night. I have been so stressed about the fussy stuff aka decorating! Stressed about cleaning! Stressed about the gifting! Stressed about all the food, I love cooking for my family...however! enough is enough! YOU said ! I so over whelmed ..I am a widow, so I am alone doing a full dinner for 20 .. So true, Christmas should NEVER be stressful, that is as far from the meaning of it as you can get. To eliminate stress this is what I have done since I got married 30 years ago: Shop ALL year!! I have a gift budget that takes care of birthdays and Christmas so each month I keep watch for special things. Listen to family, they often say how much they would love this or that. Look for things they would never just buy themselves, especially when you are on vacation. People know that when I give them a gift I often have had it months because I was thinking of them, not buying just to buy...that takes away from the spirit of the gift if you feel you HAVE to buy. There will always be one or two people I still shop for late fall or getting stocking stuffers but generally I have all my Christmas gifts by October!!!! Then, there are the Christmas Rules we developed at the start of our marriage and stuck to them fiercely....Rule 1 - once kids are born we will never travel for Christmas, it is their time and will be in their home (yes, some grandparents were upset, sort of). Rule 2 - Only 1 toy may be given per child but you may give them all the clothes and books you want (cuts down clutter, develops a great library, rarely had to buy clothes, LOL!) Rule 3 - just as my Mom did, Christmas Eve we have a snack "party" dinner with veggie tray, cheese and crackers, and freezer to oven appetizers!! The kids loved this and usually ate better and healthier; calms their excitement too!! Rule 4 - church on Christmas Eve. As for decorating, it's a season, an Advent season, so break it down into 4ths. Week one - the outside and cards. Week two-the mantle, foyer, bathrooms, small touches. Week three-the tree and wrapping. Week four- baking and relaxing. Hope this helps someone. Give yourself grace and remember the meaning...Christ came in the simplest of ways, keep it simple and you will be amazed. Spend time before decorating to declutter and clean and you will find you need very little to be beautiful and special. Blessings!

Thank you for the refreshing explanation of your Christmas. The older I get I realise just how important it is to keep it simple, special but simple. Not all tinsel and hyper activity. Meaningful Christmas at the amazing story of Christs birth. How God didn't go to a wealthy family, an important city and with th so called important people. A simple stable, shepherds and that star. I have watched your program many times, and like you so much, but cannot embrace arrangements of things for the house. My granddaughters are 15 and 17. We have a new reason to pray in our church this holy season. Our pastor was killed last Friday on a motor bike. Our church is so sad. But we are pulling together. Lots of hugs! It will take awhile to pull it together. It just shows you. Tell your loved ones and friends you love them. You do not know when things change. Love your ideas. Last year I got rid of all the Christmas decor I no longer wanted. Put all the rest in see through bins. This year it’s just the two of us so no tree. Only lovely Putz houses on the mantle with faux snow plus a garland below. It gorgeous lit up at night with the fireplace lit.

As a little girl I went to Sunday school and the teacher said to us when we first wake up on Christmas morning before we get out of bed say Happy Birthday to Jesus and thank him. Such a simple thing to say to children but with me it stuck . I’ve done it every year since. It just gives you a peaceful moment before the chaos to remember why and who we are celebrating. What beautiful parents you are to your children . Such a speacial gift you have given them in spending that precious time to spend with Jesus. Iam truly touched. For about 15 years now, our family of 9 kids (growing through marriage and grandbabies) serves on Christmas morning wherever we have the opportunity. Sometimes it has been at homeless shelters serving breakfast, gifting hygiene kits, etc. Recently it’s been making breaking, singing carols with and buying gifts for an assisted living facility. (Matthew 35)

I stopped my decorating 10 days ago, except for the stockings (that's my husband's tradition we must have!) which go up a few days before we celebrate the Nativity of Christ.
Orthodox Christians fast for days in preparation for the Holy Day, so all the treats and overindulgences are not much of an issue. Then we celebrate the Feast day for 12 days (yes, the 12 days come after the Holy Day).

Sometimes, women try to recreate that perfect Hallmark Christmas, and then they feel like failures when it wasn't achieved. I think social media makes us feel that way sometimes. I personally know a blogger that even has plastic cookies that she displays and offers them in photographs as her own. Even her children were basically just birthed for photo ops! It's so sad that " her perfect life, " makes other moms feel bad about themselves. So, thank you, for encouraging them that they don't have to be totally incredible!!! Thank you for giving them the thought that they can give themselves permission to forgive themselves and etc!!! You are awesome, I just happened upon your channel today.
