      Put stock one on it and it’ll kick over easy no kick back that’s from timing being off your smart you’ll get it right just don’t burn it up

      It’s definitely the timing too sometimes you get lucky and it will start right up other times it takes a bit to figure out the bugs

      Mike- read my comment below about the woodruff key. Also, try putting the stock air box on as a test. Too much air at low idle speeds is the second thing to check according to my service manual

    Mike,
    Before you do anything make sure that your woodruff key is still in the slot on the crank. I tightened down the flywheel on my cr500 w/o having the rubber motor lock up tool that goes where your spark plug is.
    The woodruff key steel is softer than the crank by design, and your flywheel can be off quite a bit without you noticing it.

      I have a 250r I just got and it’s got some prety bad kickback from what I’m hearing it’s the timing being outta wack or the Cdi box?

      The timing being off causes some serious kickback. I would get that dialed in before you spend money on a cdi.

      This is great advice but the HPI setup I am running does not utilize the key; it is a taper fit and even states in the instructions not to use your key.

      No problem. I would literally kick my cr500 until my foot was bruised and I was sweating. Got the timing fixed and GET IT AT TOP DEAD CENTER before you kick it.
      The best way for me to explain this is to start with the kick starter up all the way move it down slowly. It will go down once very easily and that is when the piston is on the exhaust stroke. Let it go all the way back to the top and kick it down again slowly and you should hit the compression stroke. If it is anything like my CR 500 you’ll lift it up again and then move it down maybe from like 12 o’clock to 10 o’clock and you’ll feel it kind of ‘click’ at top dead center. Then let the kick starter all the to the top and with good timing it will go.

    I went through the same deal you went through I have the older HPI ignition so it may be diffrent for you. Arlan said to set it 3mm BTDC and I set it up first time I was a little bit off I was 2.3BTDC I bought the dial indicator for timing and set it up perfectly make sure you tap the flywheel on before you tighten the nut. Tightening the nut will move the flywheel if it’s just set on there. There’s also a trick to kicking these 250r over get it to TDC then just barely mover the kicker you’ll feel it go barely past then one swift full kick no throttle. Got mine dialed in and it runs like a bat outta hell

    I know your pain, getting my Lt500r to start after it’s rebuild took forever. It’s still a bear, but I’ve found that kicking it with the ignition off 2 or 3 times builds up a charge in the capacitor and I get a couple good kicks out of it. When it kicks back though it kicks back HARD.

    I know this is totally different but I had 2004 450r with hot cam and a 13.5 to 1 piston. An a aftermarket cdi box and that thing would put a baseball size knot on your leg if it kick back !! It was very hard to kick !! I had a 180 main jet not sure what pilot was . Anyway love the build !!! Can’t wait to see you figure it out

    Go with the 02-07 Cr ignition. I have a 431 puma and could not get the hpi to work. It would kick back so bad with motocross boots on that my foot would hurt for a week, no joke! I am not a little guy either. I tried setting timing several times and it would not work for me. Now I just roll the engine over to prime it and turn the key on and it fires right up every time. Mine was the older black box version. Good luck, hope this helps, Austin.

    Hey 250rs kick back your right it's all in knowing your quad. I get to tdc push the kicker 2 clicks down then bring the kicker up then kick it. Hope you figure out your ignition.

    I have a kdx 220 that I had ignition trouble with. I chased it down starting from cdi then the ignition coil and still nothing. My last thing was the stator. It had super bad kick back with occasional back fires from the chamber. I changed the stator and it fired right up and actually sounded like a two stroke and not like a four stroke lol! Throw the stock ignition on it and leave it normal timing just to get it to run. Love the videos!!

    What a bummer your so close, I have no experience with 250R ignition at all, but definitely sounds like timing issue with the kick back. I'm confident in one thing, you will figure it out. I'll.keep watching, can't wait.👍

    Dude I feel your pain!!! I’m having electronics issues on my current build/project now and I literally just pulled ALL my wiring out and starting from the beginning again with new wire that hasn’t arrived yet. Although my build isn’t a 250R ; the electronics struggle is real my man!! Lol 😂 LOVE LOVE LOVE the way you put this bike together tho. The passion you have for this build is 100% evident! Perseverance will get you through dude 🤘🏼

    Use the OEM ignition with a motor sparks city cdi box it’s cheaper than the CR ignition and way better

    I would try checking the ohm readings off the Stator. Most of the time they will read good. If they do read good, it's best to do a peak voltage test. I've seen 3 stators go bad on 3 different brands of machines from failing the Peak Voltage test. To measure that, you need a really good multimeter with that function, or you can pickup an adapter for your multimeter off like Amazon. Good luck.

    Make sure you are getting fuel. Then call Arlan again. He will talk your ear off and get it right.

    Hey bro. I have two 250r quads and I have to use two different techniques for each quad start up.
    One technique is I lean my quad over like a dirt bike until I see fuel drip out of my overflow line set it back on all four wheels then I give it one kick and she rips. On my other 250 I have to kick it with the front of my foot rather than my arch plus a quarter turn on throttle.
    For some reason I find that using the front of my foot gives me a little more stroke in my throw.
    I’m no expert but I have owned 25 different bikes or atvs in my life and I’ll watch my friends use their arch and struggle to start
    Then I’ll come over and give it one clean kick with the front of my foot and it will fire up.

    You have to find top dead center on that bike before you try to start the motor. Push down about 1 to 2 in the low-top Dance Center let the kick-start come back up and then kick it

    250r is coming along great but I'm a fan of stock parts because I find they usually cause less headaches I like to do 1 aftermarket part at a time because if you have an issue you don't have to check every part anyways awesome vido

    You should try to start it when its off the stand so you can like stand amy where on the nerf bars and so its more stable

    if your struggling to start it have you checked you haven’t got a bottom end full of fuel ? had a similar thing on my IT490 after a rebuild and 250 both had a weak spark, don’t know about your ignition but if it’s a sim spark try using a plug with a finer wire make sure crank. not full of fuel and maybe clean up the earths before you start ripping things off as powder coat causes bad grounds

    Something with the flywheel flywheel key remember I told you about my ATC 250R Kickback so hard it was the flywheel key shattered

    Definitely an ignition issue. Mine was doing the same with an old CDI ( A bitch to start) Replaced with oem and was good to go.

    Did you set the timing at 2.9 degrees before top dead center ... that's where I have my hpi set and it will kickstart easy peasy on first kick ... and I have about 220lbs compression

      Yes, I have a video showing me installing it to 2.9mm below TDC. If you used Arlans video to time yours and you have the HPI in his video; it's a different ignition.

    That's what I would do is put stock electronics on it & rule out aftermarket. & run the CR 250R JUST MY OPINION. sometimes bad electronics expeasly Aftermarket stuff can cost u motor probs. & the worst Migraine Headache in the universe. Wick On ✊

    I had an aftermarket ignition and it was dangerous to my legs so I ended up getting the oem off of eBay and it kicks over great even in slip on shoes

    Hey Mike, does the HPI coil have a good ground? I see that mounted to the frame, did you expose the frame at coil mount? It may be fine if it has a separate ground wire. Good videos! -2stroke4life

    It would run better in my opinion with airbox and filter on... Could be a faulty spark plug aswell.

    talk to arlen he will help you and the kick back and hard to kick is normal. im 160 lbs and i have to jump on the kickstarter to start it and its only a 269 with some head work and a port. and i was kneeling on the seat and kicked it over and it kicked back so hard i broke the seat pan and some stitches in my foot

      Dude, even if it runs well once started, I don't think that's normal; especially now that I've put the OEM ignition on and it starts with regular shoes on now.

    Buy the MED coil
    Crf450 coil 2002 2008 with a new spark plug cap. Try that bud first.
    You remember I had you do this on your last bike

    Honestly man I think the hard kick is normal bc their is a few other Chanel’s with 250 rs and they all kick hard as well but diff shouldn’t be dieing after start but I dunno just my opinion man am no expert by any means diff looks killer tho brother!!!

    if you go 07 cr ignition everything is still available from honda...i have never heard bad about the cr ignition i have hear mixed reviews on HPI.

    In my personal experience I have 2 310 250r my esr 310 kicks over easy it a 87 my 88 is a 310 with no porting and it's a bear to kick over I just had both dyno tuned by Stewart's sand sport and he told me my cdi was bad and had a weak spark if you take it to a place that dyno atvs they can tell you what's up but I bet money you have the same problem I do ... check the cdi bro

    10+ years of experience with HPI units....never trust the timing marks. Make your own and use a timing light.

    Yeah I have a 89 250r with a big bore 350 it's a bitch to start all big bore r hard to start with a lot of kick back even more with a fresh motor its normally for that

    that hpi ignition looks a lot like the pvl ignition which i used to have on a c/t 330 moter and it ran like shit, i put a 01 cr ignition on the same moter and woo hoo it was a rocket ,not saying thats your problem but that was my experience . I'm not a big fan of aftermarket ignitions for the 250r platform . just saying

    I think when you went 2.9 degrees on the timing advance you went too far, try setting it to 2 degrees.

    With HPI it's not always the first big stripe on the indicator where it gives the juice

    On mine it was the 2nd big stripe so better double check that

    Just call BDTM and spend the money on there hybrid 04-07 CR set up. I just picked one up and it one starts on high comp 330. Your 250R deserves the best. It’s just more money. Lol

    I’m telling ya, the Zeeltronic is the way to go, a bit pricey, but worth the money. I’m a huge two-smoker fan and I’m twice your age. When I started, they all had points and condenser, they were crap, then CDI came along, way better! One of the motorcycles I have is a Yamaha RZ 350, it’s the same engine as the Banshees, but with power valves. I put the Zeeltronic on it and it runs perfect! What is your current compression with a gauge? Have you measured your squish band? You can test it with a piece of solder, it’s soft enough to not do damage. I think your kicking against the power stroke because of retard.

I was grocery store the other day a guy had one in the back of his truck so I waited for him to come out I asked him what the not for sale price was it was in better than poor condition and he said 6500.00 I laughed my ass off I told him 2500 cash on the spot he laughed then we both started laughing i gave him a beer out of the six pack I just bought i gave him my number told him to call me. we are going riding next week. and he watches your videos now since i told him about your YT channel.

    dude for real in the past 2 months ive burn up 3 cdi boxs from dynatech . one i put on and it fried it idling after it cranked . the others i went out for about an hour . PUT THE OEM BACK ON lol if it fires up and runs great you know its the cheap aftermarket crap . im so sic of these aftermarket companies charging an arm and a leg for 250r parts and they dont even back the product up . id love to run oem ignition but the cheap ass ricky stator burned up my oem cdi . oh and by the way the oem stator puts out a huge spark compared the ricky stator . if i was you id keep it oem rather it be cr250 or trx250r oem is oem

    Hpi is junk. Friend of mine has a led 430 puma with hpi it had same issues. He replaced with 2005 cr 250r ignition system problems all went away.

    I have the same one and had kick back. I did figure it out but can't remember what had to be done. I can take a picture of it in morning tomorrow so you could see where it's at. It's for sure off though. It should not kick back when in correct position.
