Cast Iron Leader Pipe Leak Repair

- Coming off a 5 week plus lack of business, I get a call from a customer who's having some waterproofing of the rear foundation wall. The laborers found an extremely corroded 3" cast iron roof drain that need some tender loving care.
In this Cast Iron Leader Pipe Repair video, I replace the extra heavy cast iron pipe with service weight no-hub cast iron and underground approved Husky no-hub couplings. Recommended using 3" schedule 40 P.V.C., but they said NO WAY! LOL! Enjoy the video.
Happy Plumbing,
Bob

Love seeing the old boilers that have been converted from coal still working. You know the new ones will never last as long as the old ones did.
Bob, speaking of cast iron, I would love to see you do a video on how to go about easily breaking cast Iron steam fittings; I saw my father do it but I have always been nervous about damaging other pipes and fittings when trying to break fittings.
Nice work. When our old multi fuel boiler was replaced, the basement was cold because all that cast iron was not there to throw off heat. Now I wish I would have learned how to maintain that old beast.
Thanks for that info! 👍
Thanks Bob for showing the issues around the old Brooklyn house. Helps me visualize what problems may lurk behind our old houses.
Very nice job. That longer radius bend inside will help the water flow better👍
Bob, amazing and entertaining video. You see so many odd things in homes that are 100 or more years old. That steam boiler is something else. I almost bought a home in Queens that was built in 1930 where the entire boiler was encased in asbestos. Thank goodness the good lord intervened and I did not make that purchase. I think it was a Thatcher that was converted from coal to oil years ago. Stay well.
Thanks for the info, Regards. Bob
Nice clean neat job. Can't believe how good that XH Cast Iron looked on the inside. Almost the thickness of a standard length of CI pipe.
My thoughts exactly!
Good seeing you again Bob. 👍👍
Big job and excellent repair. Thanks.
In Kansas 30 years ago storm water downspouts had to be disconnected from sewers and drained out onto the ground.
I get it, I often do that if the homeowner decides not to make a major repair. I warn them that there could be an issue in the winter when that waters freezes in the drive and walkways.
New to your channel. Very interesting content! Thank you for putting it out.
I'm curious as to why you replaced the old pipe with cast iron. Isn't PVC the preferred standard now? Wouldn't it last longer? Perhaps my thoughts on that are misguided. Would love to hear your reasoning.
EDIT: Just read down in the comments further and found my answer.
"I wanted to do it in schedule 40 p.v.c., but the homeowner did not want it!"
That's crazy talk, but the "customer is always right". Good stuff Bob keep them coming.
tanks for sharing...
Thanks for visiting
Good vid Bob, love the antique boiler
You and me both!
That's old Brooklyn home with the old boiler oil they last longer than the new boilers of today . I SAY ITS 70 PERCENT EFFICIENCY.
Nice job and thank you for the video sir,can you tell us why you didn’t go with PVC instead of cast iron.. thank you
The homeowner requested it!
@@BobsPlumbingVideos thanks
Great video. Why didn’t you put a clean out in the yard for the line.
I can easily clear it from the hub where the roof leader dumps.
I have not seen the video , BUT WHERE YOU BEEN
Extremely not busy at all, so I lost my MoJo, got some work coming up this week hope to get some good video!
Thx Bob. Does the line connect to the storm sewer?
It’s a combined sanitary & storm sewer.
@@BobsPlumbingVideos wow. Thx.
hello bob, my friend believes he has a break in his main cast iron drain because he has a lot of knaat flies in his bathroom , could this be true?
Anything is possible, but i've seen situations where sewer flies have gotten into a home from an open line.
My 123 year old house in Bushwick has a clogged leader pipe. Tried to snake it with a big snake machine with no results.
What could it be? The sanitary line flows and the backyard drain flows too.
It could just be packed with mud, unless you're using a professional grade drain machine or jetting machine it could be a problem. It could also be broken and your cable is just going into the ground? Maybe a camera inspection is in order?

Thanks Bob. Probably need to call in a pro with those tools you mention. If you're ever bored I got that and tons of other plumbing work to do in this house. I know it's a hike from Bay Ridge, but just putting it out there.
Is that the pressuretrol on the top? Is there any LWCO or automatic fill?
That's a steam guage, the pressure troll is mounted on the top of the boiler (black control). NO LWCO or Auto-Fill
@@BobsPlumbingVideos It was the black control on top I was referring to. I wonder, does it use a spring or mercury?
@@hmedwards3 I believe it's mercury!
Why on earth would a roof leader line that carries rain water and runs outside the house make a turn into the house beneath the foundation?! Is this tied to the sewer lateral?
Yes, it is tied into the combined sewer inside the home out thru a house trap into the city sewer.
Where are you? What state do you work in?
New York City
😭 its SO hard to find Good Honest people!!
You know that boiler is going to die in the middle of the winter one day.
She just does not want to change it? I said do it now, because with the supply chain issues and prices going through the ceiling the last thing you want is for it to die in the middle of the winter!
Absolutely!!!
