Actually, while it does sound funny, the Kuh and Wah is one of the best explanations iv heard regarding snare anatomy and compression. As always awesome work!
I'm getting it now. First time I've heard what a compressor does tonally. Now I'm going to go try it
Yup! Totally got what Joe is saying -- great way to explain compression.
So many other videos just say to set attack and release here or there but no one has ever explained what it does to the tone and when to use what. It's so damn refreshing to see a video like this that actually explains it in clear terms.
In compression video tutorials when they teach "how to hear compression", you always see people saying "You explained it very well, now I got it"
I never thought that. I have always thought "what the hell?".
Today, for the first time, I watched a video that actually SHOWED CLEARLY what is going on with the sound.
Thank you, Joe.
Well said - I completely agree.
This is one of the best and most basic tutorials on hearing compression that I've seen. Stuff like this is how we make our tracks sound professional. Thanks! 💯🎯
The best snare mixing video I've ever seen.
I mainly use an LA2A emulation on my snare because it sound's great and it tends to be versatile across genres for me
Your kick and snare drum videos are so simple. Easy to understand and instantly applicable. Thank you!
You're an excellent teacher, Joe. Thanks for all this stuff.
These videos are MONEY. Thanks for posting them!
Wow - one of the best compression explanations I have heard and finally I could clearly hear the differences when changing the attack and release. I would love to see similar videos for vocals and guitar where adjusting the attack and release are also very distinctive. Also, really appreciate your sense of humor! Thank you, Sir!!!
Best explanation about snare compression ever!
Loving this new series of videos. Useful, practical and concise. Not just how to do stuff, but to understand why and how it works.
Well done Joe!
Your vids are always so cool - the bass one the other day, woah! Haven't a chance to use that knowledge yet, but woah! And now this one is a stunner for me. It's really focusing my understanding of attack and release on compression. I "knew" what it meant, but this helps me "hear" it when I'm twiddling. The compression stuff was so "wow!" that the EQ stuff went in one ear and out the other while I was pondering... LOL ... I'll be rewatching this one a few times. Keep up the good work,
KUUHHHHHWWWAAAAHHHHH!!! Love your videos Joe, they have helped my journey in mixing immensely!
Thanks so very much Joe for making complex things very easy and simple. You're simply awesome
Dude this is unbelievably helpful and a simple way of explaining Snare processing and in general the Compression.
The "Kuh" and "Wah" is not dumb at all!!! It was spot on!!!
Thank you so much man!!!
I love your way of teaching, it may seem silly to you but it makes it a lot more understandable to folks like me. so hats off to you Joe
The way you explained this was spot on!! Very useful thank you
By far the best video I've seen on this topic!!!!! Thanks so much ❤
Always great content and explanation Joe. You and your other brother (Gregor) are the reason I switched to Studio One. Great stuff always. Keep the tutorials coming.
Thank you Joe, your videos are always very clear an instructive
Very useful. The best video on the snare compression.
Very helpfull, as always. The people of Sweden thanks you 🙏 Keep up the good work 🇸🇪🇺🇸
thank you you really expained that atk and release thing very well sir!
Thank you Joe!
You're a goddamn lifesaver! I am just getting into musik production & sound design. ALL I have is a computer with Ableton live 10 & I have been using foley samples from movies to make drums. It is so hard to find a good tutorial on processing snares, that isn't either over complicated or entirely reliant on a specific plugin or set up. Just thank you!
Think the best explanation i've seen. Amazing. Just subscribed!!
Thank you for this Joe 🙏🏻🤟🙏🏻
Golden knowledge.
Thank you Joe.. very useful. love It❤️
Ahhh!! Thank you so much!
Good info, Joe. I dig the KuhWaaah. Just recently drug out the 16.0.2 hooked to MacBook Pro to record my drums again for giggles.. Had this rig up & rolling with Logic Pro 5 years ago. Your channel is helping me relearn my way around this gear. Subscribed.
Great explanation thank you very much!
Love it. Adding Kah Wah to my vocab now :)
Maaan, i've watched so many compression videos, but this one was awesome! easy explained with the kah, wooh sounds, loved it! thank you so much for your teachings!
Thanks Mumfie!
9:26 that face makes the snare more perfect 😅
Thank you so much!
Great info here
Great video Joe. Thanks a lot! You got a new suscriber.
Great video, thank you
At last I’ve got it:) Thanks a lot!!!
This is the tutorial that i needed! Hate my snare sound. Thank you! Sadly i need a Drummer who has a longer attention span!
Brilliant. Not stupid in the least. It is all in the hearing and learning what to listen for. Must get on with your course!!!!
As always, great stuff Joe! I’d love to hear some of your thoughts on mixing HORNS.
Thank you ... I am lucky to subscribe to your channel.
Thanks 🙏🙏
Not stupid at all, those abstractions are pretty enlightening!
4:25 lmao. thank you for not taking yourself too seriously
Thank You
Very helpful
Excellent tutorial I have no BEEF with it it was not UGLY in fact at time it SIZZLED…..sorry I couldn’t help myself.
Great job brother. Thankful for your sharing the knowledge.
Pure sue peace👍
Nice tutorial. Subscribed :)
Thanks
The best "dummest" tutorial I have seen to date. Thank you. I know we're not supposed to use our eyes for this stuff but I really wish compressor plugins also showed a graphical overlay of what the waveform would look like with and without the compression, similar to the way the parametric EQs do. So you could for example have a short loop that you play and see the overlay for that segment while you punch the compressor in and out. The stock compressors in logic have the walking line for the gain reduction but that's not as informative as what I'd be interested in.
Excellent! And now I will forever go ‘kuh’ and ‘wah’ when dealing with snare!
📝…🤔. I’ll be back 🏃🏾♂️… great video btw 👋🏾
Will you use the same EQ and COMP on both the top and bottom snare mic's?
Watching from India 🇮🇳 .. sir I invite you to come to Kashmir and taste our 'Kahwa tea'. 😋. Thanks for the easy to remember name. ❤
Now i know what is attack & release term in compression 🤣 brilliant explanation 👍👍
Dam, this was still missing for fully understanding whats going on, for me by all means.
Thanks for your explanation.
Joe you're bleedin priceless. Then the new fender farts you want a rise for being the best standup comic that sells lots of gear.
the 400Hz area could actually sound good boosted on a combo snare, on a military marching band-esque snare (the executioners snare) or like a vinyl-sampled hip-hop snare. but definitely not yours, I agree lol. amazing tutorial btw
This was great -- on compressing and EQing an individual snare channel. (But it is mislabeled: This is not about MIXING snare.)
Stupid tutorial 0r genius?!? Enjoyed this. Really helpful thanks Joe!
Stupid or genius...I'm gonna guess a little bit of both. 😂
Hey Joe. I've been watching you for a while my brother. You are a great teacher and all around great musician. So I use studio one 5 for daw and I have apollo solo for interface. I used to live in Nashville for like 10 years, however I've been gone for 10 years. I live in Michigan now(sucks)...no country studios or real country pickers up here.
I'm a guitarist and singer songwriter. My question is about drums...I have EZ drummer 2 and the Nashville kit addition pack.
I don't know if it's just me, but it is not so easy to use EZ drummer for getting the correct country feel on a song. What do you use, and any advise on how to achieve this....I used to use BFD back in the day, however I've recently gotten back into home recording, BFD was great but was labor intensive to build out track into piano roll editor. I'm trying to get away from the whole" editing/piano roll thing". Thanks in advance man.
I don't see a question here, but my advice is to hire a drummer.
@@HomeStudioCorner thanks for the reply Joe. My question was...what do you use for drums? Live or midi, EZD2 or something else. It seems like these drum sampling programs (as far as pre built grooves goes) are all geared towards rock and metal...however country is more of a feel thing...so hard to find pre built grooves and then tweak them to taste. Just wondering what you use?
I hire a drummer
Hello Joe, I really appreciate you doing all the videos for Studio One. My question is in regards to an email I received earlier today that PreSonus has been sold to Fender. What can you tell us about this and more importantly will you continue doing the videos for Studio One? The news literally turned my stomach when I read it. I hope Fender keeps Studio One the same as it is now and doesn't destroy what has been built in the last 25 years. Thank you Sir for everything you do. You are a blessing to all of us that use Studio One. Stay safe and may God bless 🙏✝️
It's gonna be great! Fender's not out to destroy Presonus. 😊
@@HomeStudioCorner Yeah, I'm quite excited (Fender user and Sphere member) I found myself chuckling at the idea that Gregor is gonna have to play more telecasters in his videos!? 😊
Thank you Joe for the positive update. I appreciate it. I love Studio One, left Pro Tools years ago and never looked back. If you say it's going to be great, that's good enough for me. Thank you for clearing up everything. Have a nice evening. Take care and may God bless 🙏✝️
How much processing do you you add to sampled snares?
Sometimes I don't know if it's sampled or not, so I use the same approach. I listen and decide what it needs. But yes, sometimes sampled snare ends up not needing much...or anything.
Thing is
.. i have like 2000 diffrent snares, but couldn't find a single one that i really like 😅
solid like and subscribe for more kuh and wah
1:33 takes fall damage in minecraft
개꿀인디용??
If you start with a good snare drum recording...it is the sound of a snare drum, right?...then why not leave it as it is? The snare drum has worked so hard at being a good snare drum and now we are making it feel like it is not good enough. What will we do if it just gave up and start acting like a kick drum. Or a hum drum?
I love the way snare drum sounds through compression. Same with lead vocals. It's an incredible sound.
Lol very funny! BTW Kuh is the german word for "cow" and is pronounced [:koo] like Q just with a K :) ok then lets attack the cow !! :)
Sorry Joe, but this is one hell of a bad sounding snare. :D
But I do like the video and the tips. :)
"Kuh"... German for cow 😁
We need that beefy snare
crack of the snare is 2.5 khz, youre welcome
You guys talk too much
