From the back of the video:
At the time when the Egypt of the Pharaohs was becoming a world power, the first advanced European civilisation appeared on Crete, the island of ancient myths and legends, the kingdom of King Minos. Legend tells of the monster Minotaur, half man and half bull, who devoured the human sacrifices brought to him in the Labyrinth at Knossos. Archaeological excavations have brought to light fascinating evidence of the former splendour and greatness of this civilisation, in particular the size of the magnificent palace in Knossos. Was it the zenith of a life-affirming and highly civilised culture or was it a temple of death - a shrine for a violent cult of the afterlife or a giant embalming chamber? Why did the Minoan civilisation suddenly disappear three-and-a-half millenia ago? Did major earthquakes destroy the palaces or did an eruption of the volcano on Santorin obliterate the paradise island? Did a foreign conqueror come from across the sea or was there a civil war?
The film shows how the latest technological advances in investigation methods are used to unravel the mystery of the decline of the Minoan empire. The heyday of this civilisation is brought back to life by means of computer animation and re-enacted scenes.

Around 1995 Time Life's Lost Civilizations were released on video, there were intially 10 episodes which are listed on imdb here: www.imdb.com/title/tt0112054/...
These first 10 episodes are public domain and have been uploaded by Time Life here:

These are readily available on VHS, there are always tapes of them selling for a few quid. But while browsing for them I stumbled across 14 further episodes. Now it's taken nearly 10 years for me to get all of them. The episodes I have now transferred for this channel are The Huns (7940111), Hannibal (7940112), The Vikings (7940113), Crete (7940114), Alexander the Great (7940115), Cleopatra (7940116), Nero (7940117), Ramses (7940118), Charlemagne (7940119), Richard the Lionheart (7940120), The Phoenicians (7940121), China's First Emperor (7940122), Akhenaten and Nefertit (7940123) and Nebuchadnezzar (7940124). The numbers in brackets refer to the code on the spine. These tapes do not have barcodes / ISBN numbers. Episodes of Lost Voices will follow at a later date.
I've used a JVC D560 with nicam bass boost on a few tapes and a Toshiba DVD-R recorder to transfer them to DVD. A couple of them have audio dropouts near the start and the odd flicker. If better versions become available I will replace them.
