Street Photography for Introverts

- A couple of my friends asked me recently about street photography and mentioned they weren't sure about trying it because of the emphasis on street portraits and large crowds that famous street photographers seem to put on the genre. I gave it some thought and wanted to share my ideas on how more introverted people can get started on street photography without having to worry about taking portraits of strangers or putting themselves in the middle of a big crowd.

Call it street or urban landscape, architectural or documentary.... call it whatever you want and fill it with whatever you like. So much of street photography could have been taken anywhere in the world but if you can capture a feeling for the place you're in, so much the better. Some good shots in there, thanks for posting.
I totally agree with you and that’s just a good point! if you can capture the real feel of your surroundings through your photos, that’s exactly what street photography is all about.
Thanks for watching :)
I think your argument is not correct. According to you, if you take a photo of the Notre Dame Cathedral, a simple trash can or a streetlight and there is a person walking nearby (those things have been made by humans), then it would be Street Photography. Let me tell you that it is not like that. Big mistake. Street photography comes from documentary photography and is a kind of subgenre of it. It has a series of limitations and characteristics that differentiate it from other genres, such as "urban landscape", "architecture", etc. and NOT everything goes in Street Photo. Study the great masters of Street Photography such as Koudelka, Cartier-Bresson, Elliot Erwitt, Alex Webb, Robert Frank Sayl Leiter Joel Meyerowitz and many others and you will see that their photos have nothing to do with what you call Street Photography .
I recommend a great dossier on Street Photography by Oscar Colorado,
Doctor "cum laude" in Documentation Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid and Professor of Advanced Photography at the Universidad Panamericana (Mexico City) where he directs the Audiovisual Academy and the Department of Photography. This is the link: oscarenfotos.com/2013/11/30/fotografia-de-calle/
It is in Spanish, but it deserves to be translated because it is very good.
You asked me to send you photos. Well, this is my link to Instagram:

A cordial greeting.
I am an introvert and this is perfect idea. Also I get little nervous when I try to take someone’s picture thinking they might charge me. Thankfully no one did so far. Anyway, nice shots. Thanks for sharing
I’m glad you could find some inspiration in this! Thanks so much for watching :)
Stunning video, Hunter.
Just what I needed, my friend.
Antoine.
Haha “gatekeepy” is a perfect term! 😂 Totally agree with your message here: don’t let anyone define the photography you want to do. 🤙🏼
Glad to hear it! I think it’s one of those things that scares people away from street photography! Art is for everyone!
Thanks for watching :)
I had no idea how much I needed this video. I love street photography but my social skills are so bad and I thought about quitting it many times. It's good to know that I don't have to be very extravert to do this type of photography
I’m really happy to hear this video could help you out! Street photography is for everyone, regardless of what their social preferences are.
Now grab your camera and find your own place in this art form! 😊
Wow great video and tone. Thanks for sharing such a genuine and honest point of view of your process. Please make more videos!
Thank you so much!! I’ve got a bunch of fun videos coming up in the new year :)
I call a lot of this stuff you’ve shown in the video urban still life photography or experimental street photography with the complex reflection based stuff.
Thank you for watching!
Amazing video once again! So many cool shots that I can't choose a favorite! And I really liked the last part where you stand with the lamp post! I think it is so cool and creative!
And some great advice as well! After your last video I went for a walk with the purpose of doing some street photography and found myself less nervous, I will have to go out again with these new advices! (Even though it's hard to 'chase the light' here in Norway at this time of year because of the short days in winter hahaha)!
Merry Christmas and happy new year (or a happy December if you don't celebrate), as always; looking forward to the next one!
Thank you so much!! I’m happy to hear my videos have been a a source of inspiration. I really appreciate all your support :) I definitely need to get out to Norway one of these days. Happy Holidays!
@@hunterjames. Thank you!
Yes you definitely should! If you ever come, make sure to visit Bergen (where I live), it's the best city ;) !
@@TheodorSG I'll put it on my travel list :)
Sometimes the best street photography is when there are no people. I also do night photography as well. Love the photos! Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
I totally agree! Sometimes more can be said with less in the frame.
Thanks for watching!! :)
Loved the message of this video. Thank you.
So glad you enjoyed it :) thanks for watching!
Good video. A lot of examples and ideas and not much talk which is so prevalent in a lot of videos. No mention of what camera or what lens etc. Good job.😃
I’m glad you liked it, thank you so much for watching! 😊
I have been waiting for someone to do this, thank you so much. I really is going to help
I’m really happy this one will help you out! Thanks so much for watching!

Hope to see many more videos on your channel.
Thank you so much!! I’m working on a few new videos, I hope you’ll like them!
Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you for watching!!
I hate that everyone has to label everything now. I think we are all photographers who all have a preferred direction, genre etc.
It’s tough! I see merits to both. It’s easier to sell yourself as a *genre* photographer but as a hobby I don’t see a benefit for putting yourself in a box! Either way we’re all passionate about the same craft, so I never understand people who try to tear others down or try to force them into a genre 🤷♂️
Love your perspective :)
Great vid. Cool music track too (lo-if shuffle jazz whatever…). Sub . Cheers. Lee
Thanks you so much!! Really appreciate the positive feedback :) glad you enjoyed it!
Nice video! But also Japan is the best place for introvert photographers :)
Very true! Japan is a photographer’s dream!
Nice video. I thought this was a very good video!✨
I subscribed to your channel! I am looking forward to the next video!🔥
Thank you so much for watching!! I’ve got some great videos coming up in the new year :)
This was a dope video. I'm getting some Faizal Westcott and Ulysses Aoki vibes with this video. I really connected with this video because I am pretty introverted in public and also a lot of the places you went to are the same as where I would go lol. Maybe some time after the new year we can meet up and shoot and maybe make a video together.
Thanks so much man! Both Faisal and Ulysses are definitely both people I look up to in this art. And that’s a great idea, Let’s make it happen!
Yeah, a lot more chilling than always watch out for angry or stupid people in european countries
Definitely a more relaxed look at the art!
:-) Enjoyed your video very much.
Thank you so much for watching :)
you live in tokyo? let's hunt together
I live just outside of Tokyo? But I’m there often. Feel free to message me on Instagram!
@@hunterjames. i see sir, roger that sir 🫡
"Street Photography " is Still Photography. The word street doesn't explain the work. Just shoot what you like to look at. Be naive.
I love it! That’s exactly it, photograph whatever catches your eye regardless of what genre people tell you it is :)
Sorry, this is urban photography or urban landscape, whatever you want to call it. It is true that in Street Photography, sometimes there is no human presence, but there is an indication of its presence or absence. It is advisable to inform yourself and study the great references to have judgment on the subject.
Thank you for your input and view!
I believe that art is entirely subjective! From my point of view, there isn’t much difference between “urban landscape”, as you call it, and the general genre of street photography!
Could we not argue that taking pictures of human-made structures shows evidence or indication of human presence (by your definition).
Either way, thanks for taking the time to watch my video and share your point of view, I’d love to see your work, if you wouldn’t mind sharing :)
Your shots are daft. Sorry bro, trying to be constructive…
Thank you for your very helpful constructive feedback!
