Thank you this podcast. It actually comes at a perfect time because I have been accepted to the University of Texas at El Paso PMHNP program and start in August. I’m a disabled veteran and want to improve the access veterans have to mental health because I know how difficult it is. One question I had for you ladies for someone without a ton of psych experience, I had one year early in my career, do preceptors care about how much psych experience you have when applying to precept with them, or do you think they are more interested in your ability to learn? Thank you.

That’s a great question. I would say there are some preceptors (other PMHNPs) who do say they only are choosing to take Psych NP students with psych experience. This is not all preceptors, but I have heard this is the case for some. And some jobs have a strong preference for new grad Psych NPs with psych RN experience; again some jobs not all.
