Our chocolate boy is uncharacteristically sweet. Like he's a big wimp and cuddles with other fish. He also stalks the front of the tank to check out what we're doing at any given time.

I recently got a young chocolate cichlid (about 4.5 inches) and I'm fascinated with her ability to change colors. They change rapidly too.

I had three Oscars back in the day when I was a teen and I love them. Back then all you put in the filters was charcoal and poly-fill. That's over 40 years ago. Keep up the good work.

I was always under the impression that chocolates were mainly peaceful like severums.
I guess it all depends on the fishes personality...I probably just ended up with one that was more aggressive than the average

hello i have one ot these on order and was wondering if they would be ok in my tank with tinfoil barbs or if they will be ok in my angelfish and severum tank which one of my tanks would you say would be more suited thank you
They are more similar to severum and they should be able to live with them and the angel fish fine.

Thanks, mine has grown up with my Oscar so they get along fine. However I suppose if I had a male chocolate and a male black Oscar they would fight a lot because they look a little similar!

Do the chocolates still change colour throughout their adulthood? Everyone Insee an adult one it seems to be brown?

Do you think a chocolate Cichlid would be too aggressive to keep with a severum and a Geo Brisiliensis? I also have two Oscars and a BGK, it's a 300g and plan to get a bichir, but I imagine these buys would either be hidden or can hold their own.
Thanks, if you have an Oscar then these should definitely fit well, my Oscar was much more aggressive than my chocolate cichlid.
I have Chocolates in a tank with an assortment of Africans, severums, even smaller tetras and they do well. Mine are not aggressive, even the mated pair was not terribly aggressive before i gave them their own tank. They are only around 7 inches long so they may get more aggressive as they age but not now.

Hello, color comes with dominance ( fish confidence). If you have other fish in the tank and your chocolate is dominate over them then color will come soon, if the chocolate cichlid is alone or with fish more dominate than itself it could take much longer

I never kept them before so I'm not 100% on how they act
I've had two 3" in a community Central and South American cichlid tank for about a year, they change color, don't bother anybody and get along with other mellow cichlids. There was a group at my local Petco and two had paired up and they separated the rest and the staff picked a pair from that group and so far so good, about 72°, they eat everything and are unique
