As a fan of the Sonic Comics... He's a jerk, but he cares for a few things. This movie forgets that he is willing to fight for the few things he believes in... very recklessly and without much thought. Sonic is less of a hero, and more of a gun the Heroes aim at a threat. Sally Acorn is honestly the real hero of the setting for that reason.
I wanna like this review buuuuut... this movie is not the worst thing sonic related, not even by a long shot. I can't agree this movie was worse then Sonic 06 at all nor a few other sonic games and maybe one of the tv shows, it might be pretty bad sure but to call it the worst thing ever related to sonic is just a lie to fuel the hate needed for most of the jokes in this review so for me the jokes kinda fall flat. I agree. As much as I can admit the characters can be a bit annoying at time and the plot a very nonsensical its not that bad. I think they really blew this out of proportion especially when they sonic fans ignore this series existence. I've heard a lot of fans being very fond of this. I Know it's great by any means but it's not as shity as they make it seem. As one sided even Doug can be at times he recognizes what people who love and or hate something will find appealing in.his reviews

OK! sonic ova was not a horrible disaster, yes it was cheesy and random but not bad to the point where it was under sonic 06, sonic underground, sonic x, AOSTH, sonic heroes and so on. If anything it has great music, lovely art and visuals, wonderful animation and so forth. When I saw this movie when I was young i thought it was the best sonic cartoon out there and made me want to play the genesis/dream cast games again, when I see it today I remember the time I first saw it and have lovely nostalgic memories over it. Also, Julio is and I repeat IS inferior to the sonic ova voice actor.

I am with you. In fact, The hatred for Sonic Heroes happen after Shadow the hedgehog. People liked SH, even if it was flawed, it was still a good game. Not like Shadow who was average at best and Sonic 2006 who is... complete that sentence with every insult you like.

Robotnik was at least sympathetic when it seemed like he was among the last living remnants of humanity. Then they literally merged with the human world and ruined Sonic forever.
Just for future references, Sonic can't swim. That's an inside joke from the Sonic video games where touching water kills him or at least makes him loose all his rings. Therefore, Sonic didn't want to rescue the crashing vehicle because he can't swim though I thought Tails already knew that. But he turned around so to speak when he figured he could save that bird WITHOUT SWIMMING. I have no idea why someone as fast as him can't run over water, but that's just me I suppose. I wonder why RUclips recommended this video now considering when it was posted.
Really, I liked the Sonic OVA, and I'd go as far as to say it was the best animated adaptation of the Sonic franchise to date. Yeah, SatAM (and the subsequent Archie comics continuity, for a time at least) was alright, but it took a LOT of liberties from the games. You could say the same of the OVA too, but I think it did a far better job of capturing the fun and not-overly-serious tone of the Sega Genesis classics, not to mention all the fanservice nods (Sonic and Tails actually going into side-scrolling mode briefly, the Land of the Sky being nicely reminiscent of game locales such as South Island and Angel Island, Sonic's rivalry with Metal Sonic in general, etc.). And for the very brief run-time of two 25-minute videos (released in the states as one "movie"), I think it did its job very well. To say it "didn't happen" and having it be compared to Sonic Underground and all the shit games from the '00s is beyond insulting. Hell, even the English dub doesn't deserve that kind of treatment (especially since, like Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, said dub is known a bit for its campiness).

Even though I found the review funny, I can't help but disagree with it. I like the random quirkiness of the movie (just like the games themselves, really), the theme song "Look Alike" is oddly catchy in it's own way, and Sonic's fight with Hyper Metal Sonic is still epic to me. Yes, there are potholes that make no sense even in this world and the English dubbing is awful (Japanese w/English dub is a little more bearable), but I enjoy the OVA; I own the DVD of it. So no, this Sonic fan will acknowledge the movie & likes it, as well as Sonic Heroes(surprisingly good), Sonic 4(pretty ok) and Shadow The Hedgehog(kinda meh)

Abmittly there are flaws of the movie..like not must going on, and mostly an fight going on between sonic and metal sonic..but personally, I really like it regardless of it flaws. it also gives me my Favorited quote ever! "I know everything you going to do, and you know everything I am going to do, strange isn't it?"
Normally I prefer watching anime dubbed, cuz I find reading subtitles to be a massive chore, but this movie is one big exception, where I'll gladly switch the DVD over to the Japanese audio track so I don't have to listen to the atrocious "acting" of the English version. As long as I watch it that way, I honestly don't find this movie to be all that bad, compared to, say, Sonic Boom or Sonic '06.

This review blew chunks. Ben didn't even pay attention to the movie, let alone care to do any research into the Sonic franchise. The Sonic mythos wasn't well established because we've had nearly five different interpretations of Sonic by the time the OVA was dubbed and released in 1999: AoSTH, SatAM, Underground, the Archie Comics, and the Fleetway Series. The OVA makes a sixth (and best) interpretation (technically the fourth by chronological release in 1996). Speak for yourself when say the OVA didn't happen, not the entire fandom.

I love this movie to pieces. I get chills at the end. But if you really think this is a good movie in the same way movies like The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Princess Mononoke, Watership Down, The Secret of NIMH, 5 Centermers a Second, Street of Crocodiles, The Prince of Egypt or Batman: Mask of the Phantasm are good movies then you are deluding your self. The voice acting is awful. The animation is just passable. The story is bare-bones and the comedy is cringe-inducing. But It's so much cheesy fun. And as a hardcore Sonic fan it really makes me smile. Plus the music is great. It's okay to like some really bad movies if you know why you like them. it was back in 1999. Sonic had a lot more personality back then than he does now. He wasn't "I'm gonna go have an adventure and save the day!" He was, "Today's a nice day. I think I'm going to relax and enjoy myself." He was a laid back guy and probably thought Tails could handle it. Which he was for a little while. Believe it or not, Sonic used to be kind of a dick, which again gave him more of a personality than he has now.

Abmittly there are flaws of the movie..like not must going on, and mostly an fight going on between sonic and metal sonic..but personally, I really like it regardless of it flaws. it also gives me my Favorited quote ever! "I know everything you going to do, and you know everything I am going to do, strange isn't it?"
Normally I prefer watching anime dubbed, cuz I find reading subtitles to be a massive chore, but this movie is one big exception, where I'll gladly switch the DVD over to the Japanese audio track so I don't have to listen to the atrocious "acting" of the English version. As long as I watch it that way, I honestly don't find this movie to be all that bad, compared to, say, Sonic Boom or Sonic '06.

1. Voice acting: Why not just watch the Japanese version? Besides, the actual games had worse voice acting in some cases. *cough* Sonic Adventure *cough*
2. Odd plot exposition: It's later revealed that everything Robotnik just did there was a ruse to get Sonic to fall into his trap.
3. Sonic's personality: Yeah, he's always been a bit arrogant, but he always pulls through at the end and saves the day.

Actually, Knuckles could always glide on air currents (which is second only to flying), but he was never able to fly outside of sonic boom.

This review blew chunks. Ben didn't even pay attention to the movie, let alone care to do any research into the Sonic franchise. The Sonic mythos wasn't well established because we've had nearly five different interpretations of Sonic by the time the OVA was dubbed and released in 1999: AoSTH, SatAM, Underground, the Archie Comics, and the Fleetway Series. The OVA makes a sixth (and best) interpretation (technically the fourth by chronological release in 1996).
Speak for yourself when say the OVA didn't happen, not the entire fandom.

Just because it's an anime, it somehow means it's automatically better? Hate to break it to you, but there exists a number of anime out there that are pretty badly animated and drawn. Anime isn't a virtue by default.

But the reason I say that is because I just really hate how much the creators of AOSTH didn't give a shit about the Sonic franchise and made a Looney Tunes wannabe cartoon. I'm in no way stating that Looney Tunes are bad, because Looney Tunes are legendary and hilarious cartoons whilst AOSTH is just a failure. The same failure can apply to Sonic Undergound as well. The fact that both shows have fans baffles me to this day. Now, Sonic SatAM on the other hand, is a masterpiece and should've continued instead of being cancelled.

I love the opening interjection from The Engineer! it has long since been one of my favorite that's in the entirety of anime abandon.
Edit: the review is still funny years later, put what's even funnier is that I keep catching these little British twine this on its voice and it's so weird.

I love this movie to pieces. I get chills at the end. But if you really think this is a good movie in the same way movies like The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Princess Mononoke, Watership Down, The Secret of NIMH, 5 Centermers a Second, Street of Crocodiles, The Prince of Egypt or Batman: Mask of the Phantasm are good movies then you are deluding your self.
The voice acting is awful. The animation is just passable. The story is bare-bones and the comedy is cringe-inducing.
But It's so much cheesy fun. And as a hardcore Sonic fan it really makes me smile. Plus the music is great.
It's okay to like some really bad movies if you know why you like them. Like how I will never stop loving this OTT blast of Sonic action! Metal Sonic has never been cooler than he was here!

it was back in 1999. Sonic had a lot more personality back then than he does now. He wasn't "I'm gonna go have an adventure and save the day!"
He was, "Today's a nice day. I think I'm going to relax and enjoy myself." He was a laid back guy and probably thought Tails could handle it. Which he was for a little while.
Believe it or not, Sonic used to be kind of a dick, which again gave him more of a personality than he has now.

Now is just a Saturday morning cartoon character with little development and personality. At least until the anniversary game comes out since that was promised to have a more serious story again.
Also, Mean Bean Machine is the best Columns clone of all. It's actually a good game.

The dubbing isn't good, but I actually enjoy this movie, it's so bat-crap crazy, it's enjoyable. It's crazy, but Not as crazy as "The Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog." And I'm a Sonic Fanboy.
