Inciteful. Informative, and Helpful. Kind, wise clues for visitors, given with Italian charm. If I were to travel again to Italy, I would do my utmost best to hire you for your culinary advice. Thank you, friend.
Excellent video! I especially enjoyed the editing with the old films - they added a special "flavour" to your commentary. I've been to Venice at least 50 times and was still able to pick up some good, useful tips.
Order a Fettuccini Alfredo with a Slice of Pineapple Pizza + a Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino to wash it all down & wait for the Chef to come at you with a cleaver......😵 First time in Sicily, took a photo of a fellow passenger by a church fountain. Insisted she share a bench with a local. Long story short, confirming that we're from California, he's now showing us pictures of his Son & family living in San Diego. Made His day & ours!🤩
Pizza can have any topping as long as it respects the purity and quality of ingredients and supports a distinct harmonic flavour to keep your thoughts spinning of wanting another slice made in a beautiful artisan way .
I’ve been dreaming of going to Italy for the last 16 years! (Yes I know it’s been a while!) My godmother was married to a kind Italian man. May God have his soul. This video was very interesting! And I’m here thanks to Victoria!
Hey! Italian here (just as context :D) Nice video :) Peperoni is Peppers, not chilly :) Pepper is bigger and almost sweer while chilly (peperoncino) is smaller and spicy. Beside that everything else seems accurate!
Oh! That Aussie impersonation .... priceless and very good! Why Aussies and Kiwis get so precious about their coffee is anyone's guess. Yes - it's nice, usually. But I'm with you about Italian coffee. And if you get some Aussies and Kiwis on the same tour, ask them who invented the 'flat white'. The results are worth a video in themselves.
Sebastian, fantastic video! We will be in Venice in 14 days, and your videos are very helpful. We want to try real Venetian food while we are there, especially a lot of chicchetti with seafood. Also, seppia in nero!
PMSL with Melbourne coffee culture... 🤣 Melbourne people are special..(and I was born there!) Sure They know the star sign of the coffee roaster - but this is a place where you can attend a children’s party that has rice-paper rolls, cous cous salad, croquembouche and a pinata... Great video Sebastian..(try and get a decent coffee in Spain...THAT is a challenge!)
Again, great video! I had to laugh about the BYOB and BYOG. Can you imagine? I once led a group of 12 Thai people through Frankfurt. First thing for breakfast, we hit the "Kleinmarkthalle" to buy some snacks, fruits, etc. Later, we went to a restaurant for lunch. Guess what? All my lovely Thai friends pulled out their snacks and half-empty PET bottles right there and started munching and sipping away. The crazy part? They didn't get it when I told them it's a no-no. The waiter had to tell them three times to stop. OMG, I was so embarrassed! So you asked wher BYOB and BYOF is no problem? I know you already know it - in Thailand its no big deal if its not a fine dining restaurant ;-)
What a nightmare ! I’m so sorry to hear that story. I had absolutely no idea that this was acceptable in Thailand. Like, you could literally bring a 7/11 toastie to the restaurant without them caring??
@@sebastianmessinger Thai people usually have no problem with this (well, except in fine dining or higher-class restaurants) - but as a European, I would never dare to do it. Sometimes, you can see street food vendors on their "Saleng," a Motorcycle Street Food Cart, selling their Thai food directly to people sitting in the outdoor area of a restaurant.
Yes, folks, step away from the big attractions and monuments, and your bill will magically shrink by 50%! I was once shocked to pay less for a coffee, panini, and cola in Venice than I did in Frankfurt on the "Fressgass." And I really just walked around a couple of alleyways around the corner. Who knew escaping the tourist traps could be so good for the wallet?
Yeah youtube recommond your channel to me. Well done. Havent been to your City for a while. Last time the McDonalds in Austria want open sonwe drove to venice because one guy wanted to go to his pizza place and i wanted to see harrys Bar. Good times.
I dine solo all the time. Ring a book. It's fine and becoming more and more common in Italy. There's actually an article in Gambero Rosso about it this month.
Effectivement pour le gout! Quel luxe en Amérique, les gens se font automatiquement servir de la bonne eau fraîche au restaurant. Mais rien ne bat le Perrier français :)
12:25 this is so american. Austrian here. You csn bring your own but you have tell them before when you Reserve and normally it cant be on the menu. And if you Do you order another bottle at least at pricey.
But yeah just Not a thing. In the USA much more common. But even then they like it if it is a high end bottle and Not the cheap stuff they have as well. LA place, found that awesome bottle in the City, emailed the Restaurant two days before, where i reserved. They said hey we have this other vintage of this wine last bottle. You pay what we paid for our bottle, just 2/8 each for the staff.
You skipped an IMPORTANT one. Don't ask for GRATED CHEESE to put on SEAFOOD pasta dishes! Especially in the South they almost never have cheese in any dish with Fish in it. It's common to put Parmesan on 'Shrimp Scampi' in the U.S., but in Italy they will look at you very funny and will almost refuse to give it to you.
There is one of them you can use cheese - Spaghetti Bolognaise... And now, listen very carefully - NOT Ragù al Bolognaise!!! These two things are so very far from eachother... but the first one has fish...
@@Kokkikoulussa Now listen very carefully - if you order Bolognaise in Italy, especially in Bologna, you'd better spell it Bolognese and know that 'Spaghetti Bolognaise' is a French Dish.
@@myradioon Your only Point is one Letter (i) - But what about the Rest? It is just way of Writing. Main Mistake will be still done... Spaghetti Bolognese is NOT served with Ragù al Bolognese - and it seams, that you do not even know, what I'm talking about, or do you? "Spaghetti Bolognaise" in a French Dish? Where did you got that?
I have travelled all over the world and Italy is so frustrating for having a premium on sitting down at a table as opposed to take out or bar service. Most countries it’s the same price and good table service is rewarded with a tip (or in some countries included in the bill). And it’s hard for us Australians. It’s not that we think our coffee is better (we have lots of bad coffee too) but if you have a preference for how you like your coffee our baristas are happy to accomodate you. In Italy it’s love it or leave it; oh, and you are uncultured if you don’t like it? Not very fair tbh. And not all of us are convicts by the way… some are more recent immigrants from Europe who also have a strong coffee culture 😉. But it just seems like resistance for the sake of being resistant. Why not have BYOB? Why not have split bills (there are POS systems that do the math for you now). And having to froth milk at dinner time being an inconvenience for the staff… sorry to make you do your job hahaha It’s not that hard to froth milk… especially if you are paying more to sit at a table to drink it 😉😬
Great content, and love the editing! Some of the tips seem so obvious 😂, but definitely most of them are very useful 🎉

Love your comment about a traveler compared to a tourist.
Thanks! Curious minds.

Very useful! Amazing content yet again. 👏🏾
@18:05 #14, been asked several times before in Italian restaurant if we wanted coffee after dinner... most recently at Lucca...

Thanks, I get my fair share of immersion in that accent. So is this similar to the pavlova origins?
Yes. The sacred Pav. Beloved at Christmas. But is it Kiwi or Aussie? Arguments abound. But i know where i stand. Kia ora mate 😁👍🏽
"the zodiac sign of the farmer that harvested it" 🤣🤣
I think a lot of your tips on restaurants could apply in many countries in terms of where to eat.

Thanks! Great idea to block off one of the holes of the steam wand. I'll try that next time anyone needs a cap.
Hi Seb very pleased to see you break out the Vegemite, but didn’t spot the duck anywhere 😂
Ahaha so good to hear from you Dale. That duck is living happy in and around my bathtub and may wander out during a future video 🐥😂 Hope you’re well!

Thanks 🙏
I actually enjoyed the coffee when I was there Seb! But Melbourne does have really good coffee 🤣
Exactly ! That’s because you’re an open minded traveller Steph. Both can be different yet enjoyable. ☕️

I had an excel sheet 🤣!!!
Ahah that’s great! Stay organized 🤓
Pour la carafe c’est que l’eau a pas bon goût en Italie non ? Au moins l’eau en bouteille est moins chère qu’en France.

Awesome video. Some useful, as well as very funny observations. But pineapple on pizza? I think not!
I’ve seen it on menus in Italy but at the price of 100€ 🤣

luv pineapple
#1 what the... then again i have seen way too many people get full on sides and leave the meat unfinished.
From Ohio, bringing outside food to a restaurant and eating it would definitely get you thrown out!
BYOG. Austrian. I would at least order something there but yeah never.
LOL. Marmite (Vegemite for the normal world) for ever!
I would often help Europeans dine properly in Japan so I completely understand.
Yeah I need someone to help me out with that for my trip there this winter 😅
As for Vegemite - nah, mate. You want Marmite!
Cappuccino? Yeah depends alot.
Pizza was an Neapel thing only only 70 years ago. High quality pineapple and high quality cooked ham is good. Low quality gave it a bad Name.
Chicken on Pizza or in Pasta? NO GO

If you're American, don't expect drinks to come with lots of ice and please don't throw a fit when your coke only has one or two ice cubes in it.
Thr very same applies to France.
Oh this is about usa tourists...😅
Putting ketchup and mustard on pizza or cutting spaghetti? 😂
So american 11:12.
Do tourists really do that thing with oil and vinegar? 😂😂😂
It’s pineapple and ham together. This is a combo and you shouldn’t omit the ham.
