Evening mate, Just wanted to share this with you.. when you can’t pick’ or ID a mortise lock. Get a key of the same gauge turn the key until you feel it lifting the levers won’t turn any more…. The key is generally pointing towards the bolt stump ! Giving you the drill point…. Hope this helps you out.. and makes sense..

Good evening, Love watching your videos, Just wanted to tell you the reason the framed ledge and brace door is dropping down on the closing side is because the brace is pointing towards the hinges…
It should point away from the hinges.. hope this helps. It’s quite a common mistake, that people who are not joiners make…. Also heard you say that you have a problem with your back…. If you have bad pain I would recommend to have a MRI scan…. It saved me from a life in a wheelchair….

  • @210plarte

Wish I saw this video sooner. Are those hinges adequate enough for the weight of that gate? It seems they are a bit undersized, and would benefit from larger, and stronger hinges (maybe even a continuous mortise hinge) which would also afford you the opportunity to raise the gate a bit higher to center the latch in that electric strike.

A job is never a fail when you achieve your goal. No matter how it's done, and you've made the customer happy, and she did sound happy when the door opened. That new gate with the marine grade lock, well there is a failed job right there that will continue to fail. Lying to the customer, not finishing the job by putting in all the screws, a heavy solid timber gate like that needs all the hinge screws in plus they built the gate wrong. The brace was in the wrong position, brace always must be run from the hinge side to lock side or it will have no support and continue to sag. The gate will never sit right in the keep, no matter what a Locky does. The owner needs to call the company back, tell them the gate was built incorrectly and installed sub standard and wants a replacement gate made properly. That gate would have cost a fair bit as well. Thanks for this video. I've been busy so playing catchup on videos, cheers

The diagonal bracing on the gate has been fitted in the wrong direction, that's probably the reason the gate has dropped?
Unfortunately that gate will continue to drop for years to come.
The incorrect direction the bracing is fitted, actually encourages that gate to drop...

If you can get access to the inside and have the keys and the levers failed I’ve managed to air bag the door so there’s a gap then use the key to lift the levers and get a old bent hooked screwdriver or something into the rebait and it usually pops the bolt back because you have the levers up with the key
Worst case scenario Muti tool can zip though the bolt if your inside but if there’s bars in the bolt it’s heavy going, but needs must buddy especially if it’s a dead lock and your not wanting to muller the door 👍🏻

I've drilled on the wrong side. Had a gun safe that was locked, customer was selling their dad's house and needed to clear out the safe. I ID'd the lock, tried picking but it hadn't been opened in so long it wouldn't budge. Drilled through all the safe door and the hardplate before realising I'd been an idiot. Luckily they weren't bothered about me drilling the safe as they were disposing of them anyway.

No problem with putting the info on here as it’s not an opening method. Very often the wear in the era curtains means the a lever or several are not quite getting at correct height for gate. If you insert the key and rotate and lightly tension (I use a wire through the hole in bow) and as the key reaches position so levers are at full height rap the end of key with a bump hammer or handle of screwdriver. You are effectively passing the kinetic energy through hitting the key through key and into levers which very often is enough to just bounce the lever the fraction it needs to make the gate.

I love honest videos, we’ve all been there 💪🏻 here are my pointers pal
    1. The key even though a copy was a dead giveaway to the brand, all ERA keys have that shape
    2. When I’m dealing with a rusty keyhole I use a router bit to enlarge the keyhole upwards to gain more knowledge, colour/potential hardplate
    3. Viscounts are notorious for curtains failing/disintegrating
    4. I’ve developed a method for opening in this situation that doesn’t involve drilling the lock
