  • The Mazda RX8 is is a car a lot of you have had questions about, so in this video, I explain the pros and cons of buying an rx8 and how you should weigh the purchase of the car. Personally, I prefer the RX7 over the RX8 because of the turbo rotary 13B over the Renesis all day.

If you love and fantasise 24/7 about an rx8, it's needless to say you'll get one, even if all odds are against you. Money comes back, missed opportunities don't. That's why i got my rx8, and started making tutorials for other rx8 romantics out there.

Replaced the coils with revision c's when i got it and theyre still firing great. I will be upgrading to LS coils very soon too. Also, i only occasionally premix. Hoping i can make it past 100k miles lol

I recently purchased an rx8 and put a new renisis in it. Here are some tips I always tell people who are interested in picking one up.
-Have about 300 bucks saved up in case of an emergency if it is your daily. That should cover fuel, ignition parts, and basic maintenance costs should something happen.
    - If you don't work on cars try to find a rotary specialist to do your work, If you have a good renisis motor daily maintenance is not too complicated to someone who knows how to work a wrench.
    - I used to have an e36 that was put together for fun driving and I would take my rx8 over that thing any day of the week.
-be prepared for people to shit talk you for no reason other than "its an rx8" and get used to apex seal jokes made by people driving cars that are complete junk
    -WARM IT UP BEFORE DRIVING
    - Use 91 octane.
    - don't be afraid of it, it's not powerful at all so I don't mean it in that sense. Driving an engine that has a reputation for blowing up randomly can give you a little anxiety. As long as you take care of it like you should you will run into less problems. The e36 and jeeps I have owned before this have required just as much if not double the attention.
-Just enjoy the car for what it is and and have fun. Don't expect to pull 350z's and golf GTI's. it's not designed for that.
-Don't do burnouts at cars and coffee with it.

I bought a rx8 after driving my friend's Miata. I have always been facinated my rotaries and wanted a car I could daily. If you buy the rx8, thinking of it as being a practical sporty Miata rather than a something like a mustang, Corvette or rx7 you're gonna have a good time

  • @ps3alphagamer12

If you are looking for an rx8, know your budget and aspirations for the rx8s. If you want to make power get a shell or one with a blown motor, and swap whatever you would like into it, if you want a track ready rx8 get an R3 or spirit R if you’re in japan. The series 2 is far superior in terms of reliability in general and you get factory recaros, bose sound system, and bilstein suspension in all 4 corners. As for mods cat delete is the first thing you should do just aware that the factory header sounds like garbage and you will have rasp around 3k- 4k rpm this can be fixed with after market headers which will give you a nicer sounding note while also toning it down at the same time, I wish I would’ve known that before I removed my cat and went full 3in single exit. But yeah its a great entry level sports car im glad I chose it as my first car it made me a much better driver and better mechanic. Don’t let the bad rap the early molested cars got deter you from owning one all motors can fuck up over time, looking at you subaru fa20DIT and fords 2.3 ecoboost (focus rs version)

Agreed. I've spend much in NA mods and it was worth nothing other than the learning experience. Supercharger is best form of FI, turbo can be too much on engine in time.
All that said, CAT delete is a must, dual resonated mid pipes are a must for great exhaust note and flames. *Upgraded ignition coils are a must* for reliability. Other than that, premix, premix, premix!

  • @RyanDeClue
    @RyanDeClue 6 лет назад +59

The RX8, as a car, is FAR superior to the RX7. Handling, comfort, practicality.
There’s a couple things to do first. Upgrade ignition, upgrade radiator and oil coolers, true cold air intake, premix 1 oz per gallon every fill up with MMO and 2 Stroke mixed, Straight dual exhaust, Max Sport tuner module, upgrade the starter, fan kit to kick on sooner, delete the AC.
All this crap with reliability is a lie. If you pre mix, you’re fine.
I had 155k miles on the original engine when I sold mine, with 6.8-7.1 compression across the faces.
This crap about power pisses me off too. There is no reason to make giant power in this car. That’s not what it’s for at all.
The 8 can also reach amazing top speeds, of which you can find videos here on RUclips. There’s a video of a stock one with 4 people in it doing 175 mph on the autobahn.
I reached 191 mph in mine after the mods. Stock trans is geared for like 198 or so.
Do NOT go to the forums for the 8, especially RX8Club.
Don’t EVER go to forums for any car, in fact.
All you will find is misinformation, hate, and morons.

Renesis with gsl-se housings will solve the heat dissipation issue, omp with sohn adapter, fan relay kit, & running thicker oil is also going to prolong the longevity of the motor. Couple other things you can also do to better the heating issue is lower temp oil cooler thermostat & oil cooler lines.

I share some of your opinions in the fact that it does need a little more maintenance and that it's not a fast car. However, it is a fun car to drive and throw around, ive done plenty of autox in mine and it's way too much fun, and that 9k rpm redline is very addicting! As far as reliability, you just need to research and edycate yourself, I use 10w-30 full synthetic oil and the oem mazda oil filter and do the oil service every 3k miles, I also premix with idemitsu .5oz per gallon, I've also deleted my cat. And a bunch of other things I've done and a few more that I want to do to make it last longer

    Rambling much?
I mean, honestly, who gives a flying bag of horse droppings whether YOU like the RX-8 or not. If you're giving legit pros and cons then leave your feelings out of it.
I've owned an 89 RX-7 non Turbo and 4 RX-8s now and it's better to drive BY FAR. There's a reason why Jeremy from Top Gear said "it's the best handling car he's ever driven". This is what the RX-8 was made for... HANDLING and the driving experience, obviously due to the short gearing 6 speed and high revving engine.
Plus it looks like nothing else on the road and let's not forget the freakin doors. I get people STARING with mouth open when I'm getting in and out with my kids.
I agree that the car isn't a beast but is fast enough for STREET enjoyment BY FAR.
Engines mods are mostly for improved noise aspect. An intake and a nice QUIET exhaust makes the Renesis sound AMAZING. Not much else is needed engine wise. Everything else is cosmetic like lowering it, rims, lip kit, etc.
I'm a little disappointed by this vid. You didn't leave people WANTING to own a Rotary. You basically convinced people to run like hell from the RX-8 because of your own idiotic reasons. Booooo.

Mazda didn’t slap a turbo on it for a reason. They made it handle like it’s on rails. Period. The high revving, Redline screamer can be revved ALL DAY LONG.

As somebody who owns a fc rx7 and a Sep rx8 I havnt seen much hostility.. altho I thinking back from when I got my 8 I always had the mind set of. Suspension, intake, and exhaust.. I always directed my car to be just a fun turn key out of the box. Yes it's slow and terrible gas mileage but the enjoyment I get tackling the turns and downhills always puts a smile on my face.

Twist A piece of paper and secure it to the inside of the intake before the air filter. This will pull coolant into the engine constantly while you drive. It is A small amount of coolant but it will keep the engine clean of carbon when it turns to steam.
You can put your hand in the exhaust stream to feel the humidity before you do this, after driving for about half an hour.
There should be dry air coming out of the exhaust at that point.
After you do the trick the exhaust will become humid. You might get slightly better MPGs in stock form but with the right modifications this trick will be more noticeable.
Use environmentally friendly coolant as it will constantly be needing to be topped off.
This is just in the testing phase so use this knowledge at your own risk. Make sure you have A backup vehicle if you try this.
Also you can put Spiralmaxes in the exhaust tips and they help the exhaust system flow better. Two per tip is what I recommend. You should spot weld the outer one and the inner one will rest against the outer Spiralmax.
You can use A 2 liter soda bottle to learn about vortex flow. First take the bottle and fill it up with water to about 2/3rds full and mark the level with A permanent marker. With the cap off and your hand over the opening flip it upsidedown and have someone time how long it takes to drain out.
Next fill the bottle again to the same level. Turn it upsidedown with your hand on the hole. Get the water spinning in one direction then remove your hand. The water coming out should create A vortex if you did it right. It also should come out at A faster rate. You should get an average time of both ways by repeating the process 3-5 times each.

I personally love my Series 2 Rx8. I think the chassis is amazing (previous NA Miata owner). I'm using it as a occasional daily and will be used for Street RWD in Global Time Attack. Since I have podiumed with my 90whp Miata I know that power isn't everything. I focus my effort on suspension, wheels/tires, brakes, aero, reliability mods, etc. I am applying the same knowledge to my RX8 and while it may not be a fast car per se, I would consider it to be a fast momentum car. Which is something that really matters in time attack, it's ability to carry speed through corners as opposed to speed off the line(which i agree isn't very fast lol). But since it is lightyears faster than my old Miata the 2018 season should be pretty successful as long as the motor holds.

Mine is running catless, with upgraded ignition.
The only thing that isn't worn to near death on it, is the engine. The shocks blew. The bushings are going. There's crash damage, impact damage on the belly from going to work off-road, a nuked battery, sticking brakees. a bad synchro, a whiney diff. Seaspray and road-salt is lifting the paint on the sills.
But it runs. It goes quick. It'll go to work loaded with tools and shit. It'll do a trackday. It gets oil every few thousand kilometres.
It's been given the red-headed stepchild treatment just because it needed to do it. And it did so much more than you expected a 'weekend car' to do.
It's getting battered like a sausage. But keep it in fluids and it'll take it.
It gets driven every day. It gets hot every day. And it runs.

In some markets rx8 is the way to go. In Portugal you can easily find an Rx8 but FD's are virtually impossible to get. There's none for sale and when there is it's priced very high. Buying an Rx8 and swapping the engine (if power is a must) would be the way to go.

Just bought an 8 and I love it so far. I bought it from an older women that drove it pretty tame. It has 141k on it and it still pulls hard and to the red line, it handles better than my miata did from the factory and the 9k redline is orgasmic but its got some rust and i think thats somthing to look out for on the older rx8s. As far as the motor, I plan to swap a 20b into it. I know its expencive but its My dream motor so its happening even if it takes awhile.

I agree it's largely pointless chasing power in a RX-8. They certainly aren't slow cars but straight-line performance is nothing in comparison to most RX-7s. The issue is that over here at least RX-7s are several times more expensive. You can pick up a broken RX-8 here in the UK for about £500 or a good one (non-R3) for about £2000. Compare that to RX-7s; the FB/FC are virtually non-existent here and FDs command £9-10k+. For a relatively small amount of money (plus a reserve if/when you need a rebuild) you do get a lot of car.
I had a S15 Silvia a few years ago and it felt like a boat in comparison to the RX-8, the S15 was much quicker but the RX-8 chassis is amazing.

    • @mischiefpwns

ROTORS Even if you get it for that you could drive an 8, rebuild the engine twice and still be better off costs wise. Also, RX7 older and the turbo system just trashes the seals even if it's lubricated. Ideally you want one with a properly rebuilt 13b in it and I know you will pay at least 30k for a good example. The ones under 25k either have high mileage on a rebuild or low mileage on an original which means you'll end up having to rebuild anyways.
I agree that the RX7 is a much better drivers car but the 8 has it beat on price and practicality. That's just the reality of it.

ROTORS I'm sure my math is correct. Not sure what I'm incorrect about and how it's possible to be 500% incorrect. RX7 is a desired car which is why it's so expensive. My point is simply the two cars are not comparable.

Yea you did ramble a lot, but to help you. My view as a former fc turbo 2 Rx7 owner now owning a rx8 Honestly I have more fun with the rx8. I also own a turbo v6 Saab and a front engine Porsche. For me I’m busy I have a lot of other projects and passions. Mods on my cars for top hp is not one of them. I don’t have time for that. But if I did. Living in Los Angeles I have to be up Sunday morning quite early so I can drive and enjoy the rx8 high high revs and even then it scares me sometimes because someone always shows in front of me. So 400hp living in the big city is pointless. Ask the corvette guys they crash them trying to. I have two other cars. So to me rx8 isn’t a do it all car. Maybe it ca be.. To me is drivers car my Sunday morning toy for ridiculous handling and ridiculous high revs sounds. Rx8 is the only car I’ve ever had that also acts as a laughing machine. Smiles all the way. Rx8 dual personality a big pain in the ass too If you get one you are signing up for this dual personality. My final point is esthetics, I’m getting compliments from everyone on the looks of the car. Maybe you can afford the rx7 last generation which many say looks very nice. I won’t spend another 20+k on another car. For me the fc is my price range that I’d spend but I already have a Porsche that looks too much like it. That’s why I did not get me even though I had the chance to get it again. Rx8 as far as looks it is beautiful nicer looking than all the others except the fd

Rx8 are as quick as BRZ and Type R Integra and Clio RS. That's pretty quick.
And in corners it will be faster than a lot of cars.
Of course it's not a supercar like the FD3S can be, but it wasn't designed for that. Yet, is still is a pretty damn good sports car

    And enjoy.
In no way we can compare the rx7 to the rx8 nor should try to. Both are amazing cars. One being around longer to gain legendary status while the other is relatively new going through its ups & downs.

Civics are good cars to grow into. You can start with a single slammer, get 50mpg, and enjoy a light responsive car. Buy a GSR swap for cheap over time, enjoy a 2x HP boost and start learning, then throw a turbo kit on that stock gsr and make 3x the hp from the factor single cam, then you can build it and make as much power as you want lol.

My first car at 16 was a s5 n/a. I got lucky and the guy I got it from maintained it well. I still own the car 12 years later along with my s4TII>s5TII swap I'm driving now. My advice is that if you are set on getting a rotary, do research on what to look for when buying one and how to maintain one. It's not too difficult, rx7club.com will be your best friend. Be patient. Don't get anxious and buy something you know is going to be a hassle or a project.

    • @Theogrn
      @Theogrn 6 лет назад

Unfortunately man Rotary cars are not something id recommend for a first car. Too many factors of ownership and things can get pricey really fast. Especially on a minimum wage gig, unless your parents will supplement the maintenance issues for you stay away till you can nail job making better money. Find a honda for cheap, reliable, easy to work on, lots of community support and they are in abundance. Also might recommend old mustang gt’s, legacy gt’s, e36’s and of course s13/s14 if your just looking for anything thats fun for a first car.

I think the RX8 is more practical than the RX7, but one of the main issues with the RX8 is the lack of tun-ability. If you want to engine swap it or add a turbo, keeping things like traction control and AC is very challenging with it's un-hackable ECU.
