Beth, you should do a reaction to Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell New York 1992. I believe '92 was Ronnie James Dio's vocal peak. Phenomenal power in his voice that year.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (Hell is REAL. RUclips: 30 Days Touring HELL)
YAAAS please react to some more Dio immediately Elisabeth and Beth! ;) I really recommend Dio - The Last in Line [Live at The Spectrum 1984], you really get to hear his phenomenal voice in great live quality there. Keep it up you two!
I was supposed to see him with Heaven and Hell at Sonisphere Festival that year. Anthrax went from Indians into Heaven and Hell as a tribute. This whole field of people humming along and 🤘🤘.
Goes with the other saying " it's not how many notes you can play , but which ones to leave out. " It maybe impressive when someone plays a million notes a minute but to give it some room to let the notes breath. Gives the notes being played more power. That's why when someone sustains a note it gives such emphasis on what has been played if that makes any sense.
According to Dio, he never took vocals lessons. He was a classical trumpet player before he started singing. He used breathing techniques he learned from playing the trumpet and applied it to his singing. He was such an amazing talent and It was a privilege to see him live on many occasions.
Shows that singing is more genetics than training. As a good comparison, Weird Al has had 30 years of vocal lessons and worked his ass off and could never approach this.

At it's time this was not considered metal but hard rock... Sabbath when he went metal, listen to him in ELF and it just rock even has piano, he fit and did them all beautifully...not a word used in metal or rock 😋
Dio was such an amazing singer, beautiful and very powerful voice, with a great sense of storytelling. He definitely had the most beautiful voice in heavy metal/hardrock.
dio still remains the most sincere singer of all. he never exaggerates and he never hides anything. that is very difficult to do in the singing world of illusion we live in.
No kidding, she totally got why we love him. Even in his "Sound Effect" Solo at the 1st Monsters of Rock Concert. It was full of amazing chaos, but it was in "key", it had a rhyme with the violent reasoning (hear the album; "Monsters of Rock: Live at Donington 1980").
Literally every vocal coach I’ve seen review Dio has marveled over his technique, pitch, tone and control. His theatrical approach is also wonderful. You have to imagine that, in another life, both he and Geoff Tate could have been operatic tenors. Probably Bruce Dickinson, also.

I still remember the day he died, 11 years ago yesterday. I was teaching and one of my students, who was usually very active and talkative in class, was all too quiet that particular day. I didn't make much of it until by the end of the class he he just said "Dio" in a really low voice, his head hanging down from his neck. I had no idea he knew or liked Dio. We talked loads after class and I realised how fortunate I was to have seen him live 7 times! 🤘 The most amazing thing about him singing live was how his voice just filled all the spaces in the venue. It was just so huge and dense. I've never heard another singer come even close.

Stargazer was part of that setlist and I'm so glad I was able to see it live, simply amazing, as was the entire set. Truly a legendary voice with an amazing catalogue of music that he left us with to enjoy and remember him by.

Timeless classic, never get tired of hearing the Dio fronted Rainbow lineup, Ritchie and Ronnie were a very special pairing in Rock history and this was the stunning soundtrack of my youth, more RJD please Beth! 👍🏻😎🤘
I’m eternally thankful I was able to see Ronnie live once. I wish I could have gone back in time and seen Rainbow. This entire song is a masterpiece but the last few mins are that chill inducing transcendent truly special kind of stuff. I’ve probably listened to this song at least 1k times and rarely do I play it once. It’s just perfect. The world lost a truly special talent and person when he passed. Good choice!
I like your analogy of Richie starting his guitar solo it's like a dream. If you're further analyze his guitar solo it seems that he is emulating the building of the tower as it's getting taller and taller and taller then at the end emulates the sound of the wizard falling. Brilliance
I must have listened to this song over and over and over and over and nothing has changed for me, pure greatness in his voice, the lyrics and musicianship !
Separate comment at end of video.. I found it very reaffirming that you mentioned the need emotional backing to the vocals. I find that, in this song in particular, that the entire song was sung from an emotional standpoint as if the song was actually being sung by the person it portrays. You can literally hear the pain, the loss, the faith in the wizard and the subsequent shock and bewilderment at the end result that leads to a desperation of what to do now that he is gone, etc. Combined with the masterful guitar work and drums.. this makes this song, to me, into one of those epic saga type songs that would be backed by a full symphonic orchestra when done live.. whether it actually was or not. You'd be surprised how few songs actually reach that level for me.. and this is one of them. Interestingly, the song "Uninvited" by Alanis Morrissette is another which reaches that level.. and I am NOT a fan of hers by any means.. I know like 2 songs only. I heard this song while at work and was like: Holy crap.. what song is this and who sings it??? That was epic. Anyway.. I am prattling on. I will end with another suggestion for a Dio song... "As Long As It's Not About Love" from the album Magica. In fact, I highly recommend just listening to the album itself.. it is a concept album and tells a story with each song being part of that story.. and ends with Dio himself narrating the story that the songs told. Well worth an hour of your time to check out. ;)
Thank you! I have been suggesting this song everywhere for a year now! Nice to see it get some attention again. Rainbow was such a great group, Richie Blackmore from Deep Purple and RJD made some excellent jams
Ronnie was one of the greatest Rock singers of all time. What i admired most is the fact that there is no squeezing, forcing, he makes it sound natutal and easy. And this song is the perfect example. Stargazer is one of the most epic songs in rock history. Especially Ronnie, Ritchie and Coizy not only play a song, not only tell a stzory, they paint a picture, if you know what i mean. Thank you Beth for reacting to this piece of rock history (2 of the 3 i mentioned are in rock heaven)
I absolutely love this track, and more so the album it's in. The whole is such a masterpiece, from the first track to the last one. Glad to see this video, loved it!
Made me watch Heaven and Hell on RUclips from 2005 when he was in his 60s and just a few years before he died. He was incredible right to the end. Brought tears to my eyes. Saw him live in the 1980s too. Thank you for the prompt
One of my favourite songs by one of my favourite hard rock bands featuring one of my favourite singers (killer musicians, too). Loved your analysis of Dio’s singing on this. He had such a rich, full voice for being in that register.
I never got to. I had tickets for his last tour but my city got canceled because of his cancer (though at the time they didn’t say what his health issue was).
@@patmctallica3522- I don’t understand the need to include the word “little”. What the F does the guy’s physical height have to do with anything? He stands taller than most and will for all Eternity. 🤘🏼
Brilliant analysis, Beth! Certainly one of Ronnie's greatest gifts and what made him such an amazing singer and performer was his intelligence (emotional and intellectual) and the obvious thought and passion he put into his singing. If you want to hear and experience the other stunning end of the rainbow, so to speak, please, please check out the Rainbow song "Rainbow Eyes." Yes, he was the greatest hard rock/metal singer ever, but he was so much more. The tenderness and gentleness and subtlety of which he was capable was beyond words. I really wish he would have explored his full range more than he did... but the body of work he did leave us with is simply staggering.
Hard to believe he’s been gone for 11 years now. Not long after he passed, there was a petition started to build a statue in Portsmouth New Hampshire (where he was born), which is not far from where I live. Unfortunately it didn’t get enough signatures and progress stalled cuz I would’ve gone up there to visit his statue everyday if they built one. What a legendary career he had. RIP Dio
@@saschaschneider6355 Swell, but that doesn`t mean, they aren`t the best performers in total! There ist still Ozzy himself, Metallica, Gun`s n Roses, Lemmy, Bon Scott, Whitesnake, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam ....
Not only was the early Rainbow like this very, very good. The work Dio did with Sabbath changed that band as well. The last work he did with Heaven and Hell (Sabbath) is very good. The Radio City Music Hall show is just downright BADASS !!!!
Ronnie put his stamp on every band he was in. It’s almost like they were all Dio! No offense to the other musicians he worked with, as they were all great and many are also legends (Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, Geezer Butler, Ritchie Blackmore, Cozy Powell, Bob Daisley, Vinny Appice, Jimmy Bain, Vivian Campbell, Tony Carey, Simon Wright, Jens Johansson, Rudy Sarzo, Craig Goldy, Jeff Pilson).
great video as always!! dio is my favorite rock/metal vocalist, i love to see people talking about him :) i think it's noteworthy that dio used to play the trumpet, even before getting into singing i think, so maybe that's where his amazing breath support comes from!
I really liked the Ritchie Blackmore's solo analysis, it was very accurate! This song gives me chills every time I listen, by the way. And of course, Dio is awesome!
This song changed my life! I bought the album because I liked the cover and I had seen that the Deep Purple guitarist was in the band (I had a couple of their singles). I took the album out looked at side 2 and thought "only 2 songs? Look at the length of them." Headphones on and I was enraptured. By the end I could see a Rainbow in my head. All I knew was that this was the greatest thing ever and I would love this music forever. Over 40 years later I am still a fan of rock metal and prog. Dio had some career. His first recordings were as part of a doo wop band very early 60s. Check out this classic track... ruclips.net/video/ew8MUT00aK0/видео.html I first saw him 1980 and last time 2009 and he was still as great. Never lost his voice. He was also an absolute gentleman. He is on 3 of the greatest ever metal albums from 3 different bands. No one else has managed similar. Legend, total legend. 11 years gone yesterday... RIP
Every Dio song nearly brings me tears, but this song always has tears running down my face. I miss the man dearly, he was a true gift to the rock/metal world. Not only was he a great singer, but he was a great human. He loved his fans..and they knew it...he made sure of it. He let them know that he wouldn’t be Dio without them. We were a part of him...and a part of us all died when he did.
I saw a metal documentary where someone said something to the effect of they couldn’t believe that this epic voice came out of someone that looked like Carla from “Cheers”.
This is the culmination of a perfect storm of talent. I miss this era of music. Their songs painted a story and brought you into a journey through that experience.
I was waiting for this. Early rainbow was my soundtrack during my early 20s. Too bad there are no full live recording of this song from those days. What a powerful song
Mistreated live in Munich by Rainbow is the best example of Ronnie's range but also how incredibly tight the band was. I would also add that Mistreated is a live video so you get to see what Dio is doing and the song is just overflowing with vibrato, control and range!
One of the best songs ever. Dio, Cozy, Blackmore and the whole Rainbow. For me is my favourite song of all times. Hard to compare because it has a theme and a unique emotion. Great selection Beth, as always! Saludos desde México.
Ronnie Dio's first instrument he learned to play was a trumpet. He always said that much of his breath control when singing came from having to learn it to play trumpet.
Ronnie was a trumpet player, so that probably helped with his breath control. You should listen to its sister song, which is the next song on the album, A Light in the Black. It's a fast paced song compared to this slow one.
I had the privilege of seeing Ronnie James Dio live twice. First time I saw him was his solo band Dio. I am so glad her performed Stargazer! He was in his 60s and still delivered the goods. Truly a legend!
Technicality and storytelling! And that is why you are also awesome at this! Simple explanations combined in good storytelling and now and then a little bit of headwobbling, shaking and a little smile and you have the perfect combination for some entertaining and fun vid's! Nice work!!
Probably my favourite track by Rainbow, the whole song tells such a story, and just really drives the song so well. His voice was immense. You always know when you're listening to Dio.
Ronald Padavona came to our attention on a 1974 single cut from Roger Glover's (bass player with Deep Purple) animation movie "The Butterfly Ball". The song was "Love Is All" and became a serious hit all over Europe. The song was credited to "Roger Glover & Friends" so Dio wasn't mentioned as he was still part of his own band Elf. Elf had opened several times for Deep Purple on some of their American tours and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore dove into a Florida studio with Dio after one or other problem within Deep Purple. A few songs got recorded but the problems within Deep Purple got solved and nothing came from the initial recordings. Until end 1974 and the lid finally blew-off and Blackmore left Deep Purple, got in touch again with Ronnie James Dio and recorded and released the "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow" album in 1975. "Stargazer" is from 1976's "Rainbow Rising", an album regarded as pivotal by most hard rock fans, in that it represented where Deep Purple should have gone and showed the world who Ronnie Dio was. And it showed the world who the fuck Ken Kelly was. The guy who's responsible for the iconic "Rainbow Rising" album cover. Check it out and get yerself checked if not amazed. By the way, you've witnessed greatness here. Cozy Powell, the best drummer from his generation, Ritchie Blackmore, the best guitar player this side of Hendrix and Ronnie James Dio, the best vocalist apart from Rob Halford and Pavarotti. Toodeloo. Love and respect from Belgium.
Ronnie Dio was a self-taught teacher, like Ian Gillan or Freddie Mercury, they taught us to sing heavy metal with the techniques they learned from other styles of the time. R.I.P . Cozy Powell, Jimmy Bain and Ronnie ... the greatest rainbow lineup of all time alongside Ritchie "guitar god" Blackmore and Tony Crey!
I think one of the most amazing things about Ronnie James Dio (besides the obvious major talent) is that he was a singer in the late 50's in an entirely different genre and went on to become one of the pioneers of metal. It's such a different way of singing. I don't know many other artists that were able to make such a profound switch in styles like that.
Outstanding vocal performance on display and outstanding review also. Boy you know your stuff and have a great voice yourself. Keep up the brilliant work. Love everything i have seen so far.
One of the ways to understand how epic this song is, is to listen to the Dream Theatre cover (arguably a very technically capable band) and realise how epic the original is. Dio, powell, blackmore,... were at their peak

In fact, I highly recommend just listening to the album itself.. it is a concept album and tells a story with each song being part of that story.. and ends with Dio himself narrating the story that the songs told. Well worth an hour of your time to check out. ;)
The first time I heard Ronnie sing, I thought he was about 8 foot tall! What a voice. Thanks for the insightful analysis!
Tom Morello tells a story about that! Dio told him "Its not the size of your pencil, its how big you write your name."
The best video I've ever seen of a studio track mixed with live footage. Whoever produced this did an incredible job of syncing the music and vocals.
It's astonishing! When I first watched it, I thought it was live.
Dio (pronounced with an "e" like in "she") made the world a better place. His voice fascinated me from the very first time I listened to it.
Thank you! I have been suggesting this song everywhere for a year now! Nice to see it get some attention again. Rainbow was such a great group, Richie Blackmore from Deep Purple and RJD made some excellent jams
R.I.P Ronnie James Dio, One of the BEST Rock Singers of ALL TIME.....Great Breakdown Beth
You're right about Dio carrying emotion in his voice, one can really feel it at the end of the song!
There are some songs that are just epic, just great everything, and this is one of them, such a great song, one of my all-time favorites
Had the house shaking to this tune more then once. Incredible song. Incredible vocals
This is the Studio Version.
But it's the mighty Dio, so you can expect the same from him in his peak Live.
No comment on that amazing vocal leap when he sings "...that our time has arrived" just after the 7' mark on your vid? Blows me away every time!
I absolutely love this track, and more so the album it's in. The whole is such a masterpiece, from the first track to the last one. Glad to see this video, loved it!
After the solo I thought it couldn't get better but when Ronnie sings ” i see a rainbow rising" 😍
Dio attributed his "breath support" to playing trumpet as a child.
Made me watch Heaven and Hell on RUclips from 2005 when he was in his 60s and just a few years before he died. He was incredible right to the end. Brought tears to my eyes. Saw him live in the 1980s too. Thank you for the prompt
I got to see Ronnie touring with Heaven and Hell just a few years before he passed and it was magical.
One of my favourite singers and one of my favourite bands. That was an amazing band.
One of my favourite songs by one of my favourite hard rock bands featuring one of my favourite singers (killer musicians, too). Loved your analysis of Dio’s singing on this. He had such a rich, full voice for being in that register.
So glad I saw him live before he passed! Goosebumps all the way!
I never got to. I had tickets for his last tour but my city got canceled because of his cancer (though at the time they didn’t say what his health issue was).
I saw this little man once! I`m so glad I did! 🤘
@@headlibrarian1996 so sorry to hear that! That man was a force to see!
@@patmctallica3522 a god amongst men!
Agree, "Rainbow Eyes" shows his ultimate diversity.
@@jalkabre5904- You’d be hard-pressed to hear a more beautiful song than Rainbow Eyes.
RIP Dio
Cozy Powell was a powerhouse. The music world lost one of their absolute best when he died.
Only got to see him live one time and that was in the mid 90s when he was with black sabbath.he was a beast even then.
Cozy's last tv appearance a week before his accident 😟ruclips.net/video/mX5iawd-67c/видео.html
Just love dance with the devil
His drumming style was sooooo tight, absolutely zero hesitation on any single beat. Definetely one of my favourites.
All time greatest. A real true vocalist.. and 1 hell of a song writer n front man! 🤘
Ohhh, Ronnie, I miss you so much! 😢
Ask any Rock, old school Rock n Metal Fan.. Dio is min. always Top 3 named!
I always love you Ronnie! 💋

Swell, but that doesn`t mean, they aren`t the best performers in total!
There ist still Ozzy himself, Metallica, Gun`s n Roses, Lemmy, Bon Scott, Whitesnake, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam ....

Ty for the advice!
My life is now much colourfull!

The little guy with the large voice ❤
Not only was the early Rainbow like this very, very good. The work Dio did with Sabbath changed that band as well. The last work he did with Heaven and Hell (Sabbath) is very good. The Radio City Music Hall show is just downright BADASS !!!!
and he was 5'4" with this giant voice :)
The moment Dio joined a band, that band became better because of his singing, presence and lyrics.
Big fan of Rainbow.
Ronnie put his stamp on every band he was in. It’s almost like they were all Dio! No offense to the other musicians he worked with, as they were all great and many are also legends (Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, Geezer Butler, Ritchie Blackmore, Cozy Powell, Bob Daisley, Vinny Appice, Jimmy Bain, Vivian Campbell, Tony Carey, Simon Wright, Jens Johansson, Rudy Sarzo, Craig Goldy, Jeff Pilson).
great video as always!! dio is my favorite rock/metal vocalist, i love to see people talking about him :)
i think it's noteworthy that dio used to play the trumpet, even before getting into singing i think, so maybe that's where his amazing breath support comes from!
I really liked the Ritchie Blackmore's solo analysis, it was very accurate! This song gives me chills every time I listen, by the way. And of course, Dio is awesome!
I Love how Blackmores guitar keeps changing colour in this vid - Miss RJD every day
This song changed my life!
Check out this classic track... ruclips.net/video/ew8MUT00aK0/видео.html
I first saw him 1980 and last time 2009 and he was still as great. Never lost his voice. He was also an absolute gentleman.
He is on 3 of the greatest ever metal albums from 3 different bands. No one else has managed similar.
Legend, total legend.
11 years gone yesterday... RIP

Goose bumps rise up and tears drip down over the Greatness that we will keep in our memory for our lifetime!
You will see him on the other side dont worry.
@gilaguypronouncedhela416 - Very well said, my friend. 🤘🏼
Oh, there are live versions, if you know where to find them. 🤘🏼😏
It's so great to see Dio and Rainbow getting the recognition they deserve.
Nice work!!
RIP Ronny! Lucky to catch him live once!
RIP Dio you absolute legend! Rising is one of my favourite albums ever!
Treat your ears and listen to his earlier band Elf, song: Driftin (1972). So much dynamic style vocals on the track
Or Shotgun Boogie.
Probably my favourite track by Rainbow, the whole song tells such a story, and just really drives the song so well. His voice was immense. You always know when you're listening to Dio.
I love how you take the time to know who the band members are. Legends all.
WENDY Dio must be so pround by reading all the comments here!
I hope she`s doing fine! 🙏
God bless you!
I know Wendy knows how much Ronnie was loved, but I really hope she see’s every comment like yours.

Such a big voice in that tiny body! Ronnie was the voice then and still are to this day. I haven’t heard anyone that match him since....🙌🏻
Ronnie was the best. Such a great singer and a great person. Miss you Ronnie. ;)
Thank you Beth! This may well be my favorite song of all time, and I love hearing your take on it.
I have been working on Children of the Sea. Ronnie was a one of a kind!
Ronnie James Dio was amazing. Huge voice for a little guy. Kinda nice watching the vocal coach just digging the groove.
He had so much control over his voice amazing vocals
One of the ways to understand how epic this song is, is to listen to the Dream Theatre cover (arguably a very technically capable band) and realise how epic the original is. Dio, powell, blackmore,... were at their peak
