A number base, also known as a numeral system or radix, is a mathematical system used to represent numbers using a specific set of symbols and rules. The most commonly used number bases are:
Decimal (Base-10): The decimal system uses ten symbols (0-9) to represent numbers. It is the system most commonly used in everyday life.
Binary (Base-2): The binary system uses only two symbols (0 and 1) to represent numbers. It is fundamental in computer science and digital electronics.
Octal (Base-8): The octal system uses eight symbols (0-7) to represent numbers. It's less common but is sometimes used in computing.
Hexadecimal (Base-16): The hexadecimal system uses sixteen symbols (0-9 and A-F) to represent numbers. It's widely used in computer programming and represents binary data more compactly.
Each base has its own set of rules for counting and representing numbers. For example, in decimal, you count from 0 to 9 before carrying over to the next digit, while in binary, you count from 0 to 1 before carrying over. Different bases are chosen for various applications based on their suitability for the task.
