    Your "don't leave home without it" advice for the battery charger brought back memories of my '72 MG Midget. Back in the day, I became very adept at pushing the car solo then jumping in and popping the clutch when the battery died. I always tried to park on an incline just to make the job easier. The Midget only weighed 1,620 lbs and had a 1,275 cc engine. Your neighbor's 3000 is large by comparison!

      +offtwoaces Haha that Healey inline-6 engine block alone probably weighs more than an entire Midget!

    Brings back a lot of mixed memories. Had a 1967 A-H Sprite. Girls loved that car, I did, too. Hated working on it every weekend. And don't even get me started about Lucas electrics...

    You musta been saving that video for a while, Ivan. It looks like it's warm with everything green in the background. It's about 10F where I am in Ontario right now and your video almost makes it seem warmer. Excellent job on the Healey as well.

      +wysetech2000 Yeah just some old footage that I was saving for a really cold day like today...the Healey is in hibernation right now, but I'm sure it will be back in my shop for one reason or another this summer!

    Was torture watching you drive that grand old English dame down that potholed gravel road!
    Ivan a small lathe is a really useful tool around the workshop. You could have inside turned that bush and used the brake hone to take off the last couple of thou. And it's fun learning how to machine stuff. Cheers

      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  9 лет назад

      +tecnaman Considering it has a beefy truck-like suspension, I don't think the Austin really cared haha! Wonder if the roads were rougher 50 years ago than now?

      +EZRider1979 Now way man...I was actually a little tired of the little roadster after a few weeks of tinkering with it. Literally EVERYTHING needed tweaking or adjusting. Just when you think you have it perfect... Too much maintenance!
      I'll stick to my small collection of vintage Japanese bikes...they're faster, cheaper to maintain, way more reliable, and don't leak oil everywhere haha

    Ivan when I heard the Trunnion I almost freaked. Man you brought back many bad memories of doing these. However I thought your idea of honing the bush was excellent ,never ever gave that a thought ,maybe because we used reamers.Very nice video took me way back.5 STAR.Tam.PS the later stub axles were threaded at the lower trunnion and were a nightmare always seizing up.

    We still ream bronze bushings on International truck steering pins/kingpins. We just bought a tapered-fluted reamer from our local bolt supplier Fastenal. Amazing how similar the little car resembles the large truck front end.

    Very nice looking Austin Ivan and glad to see the owner kept her up after all of those years. Interesting that you didn't have much trouble finding parts for such an old vehicle. Looking forward to seeing what else you do with her. And you must have filmed this way back in the summer.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  9 лет назад +1

      +stuzman52 Hi Terry! It was an honor and a pleasure to work on his beloved Healey! I did cringe quite a few times as I was working on it and un-doing other people's mistakes. Let's just say that some "mechanics" who touched this beauty before I got to it should not have been allowed even near it!!!
      Oh yeah, figured I would put out a summer vid to help everyone get through this cold spell :)

    Sounds like my Lawnmower, beautiful car. Old school is the only way to go. I wonder if the engine has been worked on, its 49 years old and still runs decent. The difference between new cars and old cars is mind boggling.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  9 лет назад

      +Charles Miller The owner told me that 20 years ago he did get the engine overhauled to combat the low oil pressure problem. New bearings, piston rings...the works. However the quality of work was questionable...you will see in Part 2.
      I don't think you can put 200k miles on an old British machine with just oil changes...technology has advanced no doubt. But it is very "rebuildable" and easy to work on...something that can't be said about modern "disposable" vehicles :)

    Its gave me a little chuckle to see you working on this old gem. Seen as your specialty is diagnosing weird and complicated electrical issues and this old thing probably has fewer than 2 dozen circuits. As they used to say in England in the heydey of the British car industry - Lucas Electrics - Home before dark!
    Nice to see such an old classic being looked after. British roadsters and sports cars always seemed to do pretty well in the US market for some reason. When I've been stateside I've been surprised how many MG's and Triumphs I've seen. Especially in California there are quite a few TR4's/TR6's/Spitfires and i saw a few MG-B's and MG-C's. Its probably because they don't rust out in the south west.
    I'm a bit of a classic car guy. My boss has a 1971 Jensen Interceptor (not sure if they ever exported to the US). Its got a Chrysler V8 engine, beautiful vehicle. My neighbor has just brought a shell of an old series Landrover. The 2.2 petrol engine is possibly salvageable amazingly enough but its electrical system is 1968 vintage with a Dynamo (no alternator). So I'll be helping him with it. One of my clients has a stunning red TR6 which is a pretty interesting vehicle because it was one of the first examples of direct multi point fuel injection in a vehicle, although the export versions were carborated. A bit nicer than the MG-B hes got because its got an overdrive so it will cruise on the motorway at 100 quite comfortably in the MG-B (4 speed manual) its a bit worrying running it at 75-80 because the engine is working so hard.
    Funny you mention spare parts for old classics. The last part of the UK's largest car company and employer the once mighty British Leyland (once British Motor Corporation) is Unipart who among other things sell parts for these old classics. They do pretty well out of it. The rest of the business is long gone.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  9 лет назад

      +zoidberg444 The only circuit I had to diagnose on this baby was for the overdrive engagement solenoid. The relay is tied to the manual toggle switch, the shifter, and the accelerator cable as well. Why they didn't just install a regular 5th gear in the tranny is beyond me...

    • @zoidberg444
      @zoidberg444 9 лет назад

      motoYam82
      Yeah. Overdrives were a sort of a peculiar bit of kit really. I suppose with the way the engines are mounted for rear wheel drive they wanted to keep the gearbox shorter. It was the same division of GKN which made pretty much all the overdrive units for all the big UK manufacturers - British Leyland, Rootes, Ford UK, Jaguar and Landrover. They were expensive as well. On the Triumph roadsters it was like nearly an extra £1000 to have an overdrive in the early 70's. When you consider you could buy an ok house for £3500. I think it was a money making exercise more than anything.

    • @phoslurperr
      @phoslurperr 7 лет назад

      Almost all Healey's were exported to US and almost all had overdrive. For 1967 Overdrive was standard on US market 3000's (this car) and the car sold for about $3500 overdrive included.

    Ivan, That took me back, The special reamer for doing the bushes, I have one, it's a alignment reamer and does both the upper and lower bushes at the same time. You couldn't reamer all the bushes, o/s and n/s separately without having tight spots. If the drive to your friends house is as bad as yours, you'll be soon replacing them again. Grease the kingpins monthly :-)) You can borrow the reamer at any time, but pay the postage from the UK. or get your friend to make me an offer if he keeping the car. p/s Love yours and Eric's videos, best on U tube

    Fun cars to work on but Lucas electronics will leave you stranded all over. Back in the 70's diagnostics was done almost exclusively with a scope on the rope, analog volt ohm meter, dwell meters & timing lights but we had generator/alternator tester with belts to spin them up, distributor machines, armature growlers, etc, adjust points with a match book...it was easy but boring. It's a lot more fun to work on cars now. We did toe adjustments with a toe bar by scribing the tires like Bryan stated below plus you don't have to worry about sidewall runout, bulges or distortions. You should try it next time and do a comparison between both and then see what the alignment rack shows. Nice video brings back memories of changing truck kingpins & line reaming the bushings but a brake hone will work in a pinch on a little Austin...good tip. Simple little engine have fun with the oil pump.

  • @moparbryan

    Ivan another method for setting toe you might try can be a little simpler and faster possibly. raise the vehicle in the front so both steer tires are off the ground. using a screwdriver tip or an awl and something to rest it against, or a nail driven thru a block of wood bring. bring the point under the front of the tire till it contacts it in the tread area. rotate the tire several times scribing a temporary line into the tire. repeat on the other tire then lower the vehicle so the suspension is loaded. measure between the lines front to rear of the tires and adjust accordingly

    • @haywardsautomotive6156
      @haywardsautomotive6156 9 лет назад

      +Bryan Saunders Thats how we used to do it on the alignment rack with the toe bar and it had the scribe on the bar...old school how it was done before computerized and laser racks.

    does "50" niple feed grease up into "6" and thus the fulcrum pin, my Austin FX4 london taxi has a niple atop the king pin- "it seems " as installed for greasing, and removed for driving - so damper arms and leep-frog the top of the king pin, while driving, I just bent a fulcrum pin "8" while getting it out- to change the damper, pin was rust into steel inside the bushes "7"

    I remember those dames trunnions and swivel pins and bushings and so forth from the old days back when in the 1950s you had king pins there was similar to their suspension. Before the Ball joint. Actually they were much better much tougher for the old roads of gravel and rocks compared to the modern ball joints.

    You mention it is a good idea to have a battery jump start in your car. The device you show is the pocket, portable, compact battery assist. Since this uses a lithium ion, high charge density battery similar to what is used in hover boards, I wonder about the safety of leaving this device in an automobile. There have been national reports about hover boards suddenly bursting into flame. Might this be a concern with these compact battery assist devices?
