The Return of LEGO's Greatest Original Character

- Johnny Thunder, the main protagonist from LEGO Adventurers is without a doubt one of, if not LEGO's greatest original character. While he may appear as an Indiana Jones knockoff to most, the character, and the sets he was included in hold a special place in my heart - and thankfully, he'll be returning to store shelves later this year, with the new LEGO City 2024 Jungle sets. Let's talk about it.

Sorry for disappearing the last few months. It's been an incredibly difficult time for me and my family. Nevertheless, I'm glad to be back on RUclips.
While you're at it, please, please, please - check out Mustache Maniacs Film Co. Here are links to their three Johnny Thunder films.

Captain Redbeard: I be a joke to ya, land-lubber?
Yes
Captain Redbeard is definitely in my top 3. Johnny just has a very special place in my heart - he's the unlicensed version of Indiana Jones, my favorite fictional character of all time, and the main protagonist of Mustache Maniacs Film Co.'s best work to date - which introduced me to brickfilming in many ways.
@@OurToyWorld Johnny’s number 1, what are your other 2 picks?
@@brenlc1412 hmm
I'll do Redbeard at two
and...
probably Clutch Powers at 3
I think this time Johnny Thunder is pulling a Steve Irwin and documenting animals from very close up.
I guess he retired from treasure hunting after the Orient Expedition.
@@kidz4p509
My guess is that whoever designed these sets thought "oh hey, Australian wilderness guy. Must be a Steve Irwin style wildlife documentary host." without even knowing the actual character history of Johnny Thunder.
Yeah and i also think he’s inserting his microphone between his legs into these animals too to get a veeeery close shot from behind
With the lack of knowledge some of these designers have with the properties they design sets for, I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case.
Yep, exactly that!
Seems he's become a landlocked Jacques Cousteau.
I approve!
I do love me some WWF style animal protection!
What's wrong with vibing in the jungle? 😂
Johnny Thunder isn't allowed to take days off just to vibe, ok? lol
It's funny: the last time there was a City Jungle theme, I was convinced Johnny Thunder would return, but he didn't. And yet the sets were very engaging. Now Johnny Thunder does return in Jungle but the sets don't evoke much play from me currently.
Ooo, interesting observation. I agree though- those jungle sets are MUCH better. Could've easily thrown Johnny Thunder in, and he'd fit right in. These new sets, while the vehicles are cool, are just lacking severely in story and location builds. Not cool, LEGO!
@@OurToyWorld The only story I know so far is that some of the figures in Jungle carry over from last year's Arctic exploration
they turned a fan favorite adventurer into a wildlife photographer 😭
They really did, smh
it was probably too violent for today's lego standards, still a shame though.
the lego video essay goat has returned at last 🔥
Thanks Goldfyre! Congrats on 20k my friend
I think you are misunderstanding the spirit of the newer sets. It's not supposed to be an action theme, but rather a theme about exploration and animal photography with (but not about-) Johnny Thunder.
I do think the sets are boring, but the reason is not because the lack of a villain.
Exactly, I feel like no one is getting this?? This isn't a remake of Lego Adventures, it's just a City subtheme with an easter egg character thrown in. That's all Johnny is here, he's a nod to a classic theme, an easy way for new fans to get a classic character, and I'm happy with that. This series doesn't have to completely line up with the lore or timeline of Adventures, it's just for fun
I do still think the sets could be better though. I would've liked more emphasis on the jungle itself and less on the vehicles. A large location set would've been great, like a jungle diorama with lots of plants and animals and things to photograph and observe. Placing so much emphasis on vehicles when the theme is about nature is just kinda lame to me. City gets too many vehicle sets 😔
Something that impressed me was that the game sets they did could be played by one person. I was effectively an only child (complicated family set up), and circumstances meant I didn't see my friends outside of school, so board games from relatives were really disappointing presents. I was in my thirties when Johhnny Thunder appeared, and I thought how great it was to provide a game like that.
Cool. Orient Expedition was my favorite theme growing up.
Thanks for sharing. I think it’s the perfect Adventurers theme
Omg the Mustache Maniacs Johnny Thunder films were my childhood!
No way! Glad to know I'm not alone. Which one is your favorite? Marco Polo's got to be my favorite, but Wisdom of the Ancients is a close second.
He returned in a set for The Lego Movie 10years back as a master builder, man 10 years, were old😢
I remember I was so excited back then! Super cool to have him in a few sets this time around, though
It’s great to see you back!
I don’t see the new Jungle Exploration sets as distinct from other City subthemes, such as Arctic Exploration or Deep See Exploration. All are a variation on a common approach: Vehicles, animals, minifigures, and sometimes small side builds approximating the context.
As much as I would want Adventures to return, the Jungle Exploration sets are not that.
I think the inclusion of Adventurers minifigures is simply a nod to the past.
Thank you so much for covering this! Being born in 1998, I did have the chance to get and play with the Orient Expedition and the last few sets in the series before Lego moved on. Ahh, the Adventurers series was a theme I hold close and dear to my heart as I remember quite fondly the sets and hanging out with friends building, and playing the board game that the Orient Expedition brought!
Return of the King 👑
Something like that! Thanks for the support, CPA!
The new minifigs and animal models are great, but it doesn't really have an adventurers vibe. Shoehorning that into Lego city loses so much of the charm and character of Adventurers, because it was all about the retro style vehicles and period setting. Johnny Thunder used to drive a model T care, he shouldn't know have a modern landrover with drones and helicopters. I'd have preferred that they leave the characters in the 1920s, and keep the "pulp" aesthetic.
I disagree that their purpose isn't clear though, they are blatantly going to the jungles of various continents to make some sort of nature documentary, as evidenced by the focus on the animals and all the camera equipment in each set. That's a fun theme, and something that Adventurers hasn't done (excepting the prehistoric animals of Dino Island). I'd just rather they did it in a vintage style.
Because of that weird contemporary setting, I see it as a Johnny Thunder's fan/cosplayer 😁
The animals are great though.
Adventures was a theme long retired by the time I got into Lego or was even born. I do appreciate Lego remaking these classic figures like Johnny Thunder but also the M-tron and Blacktron figures in the Space CMF for the modern generation. I don’t know a lot about the Adventurers lore, but I already know Johnny Thunder has a space reserved on my shelf for him
The Johnny Thunder adventure sets were mt first ever own lego sets as a child. I remember the day my dad took me to the toy store and I got to pick one out for my birthday, it was small, it had a trap door, a palm tree, and a map, top hat man, and johnny, some snakes. And those 3 pieces I played with for hours and hours everyday after school. Just even that one small set. It sparked my imagination. I story told and made adventures up for hours. It started my lego journey. And its still my favorite mini figure to this day because of all the memories. I am very sad that his hat got lost in a move somewhere I never found it. I always play with him and the indian sets, they became best friends and I wish I still had the native american set with the tepee. So many good memories.
as a 19 y/o i need the adventurers theme to make a comeback!!😭
I feel you!
we can finally complete the trio, as we got Pippin Reed in the Orient Express and Dr. Kilroy in the history museum, it was only a matter of time before Johnny himself returned
Johnny was in CMF series few years ago.

Welcome back my friend. I missed these vids!
Thanks Scott!
I'm happy to see the nod to the Adventurer's at all, and I like the modernization of the figures (Harry the pilot looking especially good!), but the spirit is very different. This is more like Kratts Creatures or Steve Irwin take on things instead of the exploration, tomb raiding, danger and mysticism, and highly modernized as opposed to the 1930's-40's. So as a result it's a lot more grounded, and lacking the edge. It's not bad, but it's also extremely different.
Good to see you back, brother! Excellent video!
Thanks for the support, Hive. Means a lot man :)
Thunder also appeared in a CMF series back in about 2019, albeit not by name. I still have the figure, and I thought it was the last time Johnny Thunder would get a figure, but it seems I was mistaken.
There was a character in Lego Dino called Josh Thunder, I heard he's a descendent of Johnny Thunder.
He is! Idk about you, but I love how all the themes from the late 2000s and early 2010s are all connected.
They are not equipped with guns this time so that's sadly a downer.
I rember the Adventure theme still have my boat from the Jungle River set was my favorite small set l had even to this day. Might check out the new sets sometime.
Jungle was such a fascinating theme. It’s probably my third favorite adventures subtheme
So glad johnny thunder and pippin reed are back. However I’m not crazy about the sets so I might find alternative ways to acquire them
I feel you on that, big time
This is gonna hopefully do good for Lego.
I sure hope so. Thanks for watching, Songal!
@@OurToyWorld You're very welcome.
There was once a LEGO movie called the Adventures of Clutch Powers and I'm certain that he's inspired by Johny Thunder since they're both adventurers. Years later, Clutch would make his appearance in Ninjago in Season 11: Scrolls of the Forbidden Spinjitzu. He even got his own minifig in one of the army builder packs. He'd then make small and sparse cameos in later seasons
I love clutch powers. He’s another fantastic LEGO character. I’ll never forget watching the 4-d film at LEGOLAND discovery center and later finding the film for free on good old YT
The Goat has returned. Hope everything goes well for you brotha 💙
Thank you! Glad to see you're continuing to crush it with the channnel
@@OurToyWorld ay man that means a lot , hearing from one of my main yt inspirations 🫡
Born in 2002 as well... still the most iconic lego theme for me as well. That said the new stuff looks just as unimaginative as every lego set today. They should give us some good old retrocars and biplanes, and not these modern copypaste stuff. Lego is truly on a downfall for me.
The sets just have so much more aura, more life, more care put into them. Nowadays LEGO is just flooding the market. UCS sets, big D2C sets don't even feel that exciting anymore. It's weird. Less definitely is more.
I love the mustache maniac movies.
Thanks for sharing. Glad I’m not the only one that loves their work.
Yoooo he's bacccck!!!
Woooo thanks for the support, Machinex
🐐 is back! Hope all is well!🫡
Thank you Brickman!
We love you Richie welcome back
Aww thanks Andy
My favourite Johnny Thunder brickfilm is the series from Phil la Phil (DIno, Dessert and Vah Juwgle)
I’m going to give that a watch.
I also don't like how it's modern. I think it would have been really fun to keep the 1930s vibe.
I agree!
We are so back
Thank you, Glubus. Indeed we are.
What artifact has Johnny stolen to be able to still look this well?
Must have a plethora of botox lol
Johnny you old sly dog, welcome back
I agree it's boring. For the most part it's just those random generic vehicles I don't care about. No base of operations, no large location of any kind... Even the choice of animals, like are there really no elephants? It's just like arctic exploration without penguins - not to mention that wave suffered from half of the sets being underwater which is not in line with the rest of the sets. I like the idea of being able to connect side builds across the sets to create a jungle. However, it's not like Harry Potter theme where I'd get multiple Forbidden Forest and Aragog sets to recreate the scene from the movie - here it just doesn't have the same kind of appeal to me.
I know him as Joe Freeman 😮😅
Thanks for sharing, can I ask where you’re from?
@@OurToyWorld Germany - and I got the Sphinx Set as child. Here it came with an audiobook on cassette tape. (Still a decent listen btw!) And there he is called "Joe Freeman" - I believe LEGO didn't release the audio books in all countries but around the 2000s there were a couple of set which had audio books. There also priate stories and so on (sorry got a bit off topic)
@@apfelfreund6859 don’t apologize, I appreciate you sharing, I want to make a retrospective on adventures at some point this year
Return of Our King of the World
Haha, thanks Joey!
What's your opinion about lego dreamzzz?
If I can be honest with you, I don't really think about it much. Kinda forgot it even existed, until you mentioned it now, lol. I heard the second season is now out. Are you a fan?
@@OurToyWorld Yes,I like it
The best Lego character is still Jack Stone /joking
He's certainly a character! lol
I do t think this is trying to be an adventurers recreation. It’s just a cameo.
I’d rather have an accurate adventures GWP at that point tbh
W vid
Thank you!
Whereas Mario is the face of Nintendo, Johnny Thunder has to be the face of LEGO.
I would love for that to be the case - now that you mention it, I wonder who is, or what is, the face of LEGO...
I would’ve thought Emmet would be the mascot of Lego, or at the very least their cinematic side. I suppose the mascot is just a generic minifigure with a smiling face.
I thought Max was the mascot about 10 years back.
Better than Clutch Powers?😉
THE Clutch Powers? 😂
Do you know about the original character that Lego created?
So burnt out on licensed Legos…
Tell me about it, lol
This ain't johnny thunder.
At all.
The remade figure, or the sets? Sets may include Johnny Thunder but they do NOT honor the legacy of Adventurers imo
The "theme" or "vibe" isn't JT. JT should be about ancient civilizations, history, artifacts. Not a zookeeper
👋 Richie hope you’re well. Brick bootleg Indiana Jones👍
Thanks for the support, Sidious, means a lot. Haha, don't go knocking Johnny Thunder like that!
