agree! Every watch have absolutely wonderful aspects about it, but sprinkled amongst the awesomeness is always some things that make u go wtf did u do this GS?!
I actually really like the bracelet width. Was skeptical at first, but after wearing mine for a while (I have the chronograph GMT, so 23mm width!), I adore the stability and comfort it brings.
The number of folks jumping on the bandwagon critiquing GS bracelets & lack of micro adjustment. The bracelets are absolutely fine. Well made & good quality. Sure, they could taper a little more. I have micro adjustment on my other pieces and rarely use it.
I appreciate your honest reviews and dry humor. You consistently review watches I'm interested in, but this is one I actually own. When it comes to watches my priorities are 1) Design, 2) Accuracy and 3) Details, which is why Grand Seiko is one of my favorite brands. The SBGE285 is the 4th Grand Seiko GMT I've owned and it's easily my favorite. I like every aspect of the Evolution 9 changes (especially lume on all the indices)....except the bracelet width. I think it looks too wide, but I also don't wear any of my Grand Seikos on a bracelet partly because I think they're mediocre but mostly because I think they look best on straps anyway. If I could only keep one of my GMTs, it'd be my Rolex Pepsi GMT, but this would be a close second.
It certainly works for me. Love titanium especially when it is worked like this. Very good looking. The power reserve marker on the dial is my only reservation.
This is the first GMT watch I've actually wanted to get. The only thing stopping me is the power reserve(well also the fact I don't have that kind of money but we'll go with the first reason only).
GS is my favorite brand, I have two, but I'm also not mad about the latest 'Evolution 9' generation. They've lost some of the elegance and purity of the previous styles, but I get that they're trying to create something new. Owning several Omegas, and playing with friends Rolexes, I'd have to disagree with you about the zaratsu polishing. It's on another level, especially on the 44gs & elegance cases. It's like comparing watching a video at 480p and 1080p. (Man, what a nerdy, also completely unnecessary comment!🙄) Great job as always. Love all your Grand Seiko videos.
I love Grand Seiko. The finishing and designs are way more interesting than most watches under $10k. But every time I see a new release, I can’t help but wish it were 1 to 2mm smaller in every dimension. If this watch were 39mm wide, 47mm lug to lug and 12-13mm thick I’d be all over it. But it’s still too big. The Omiwatari and the SBGW231 size watches are the only Grand Seikos that fit comfortably on my smaller wrist. Just seems weird to have such an elegant watch be so big and especially chunky.
Omiwatari may have small case but its dial to case ratio is still high making it wear quite large... granted the lug to lug is quite decent... but agree, they do need to put out sub 40mm more...
great video. I tried one at the local AD and I have to say it was the nicest GS watch I've tried, from size, feel and appearance it ticks all the boxes. The bracelet issue is baffling considering all the variants in the market that address micro adjustment...I just hope when the time comes for me to buy it, the bracelet fits my wrist.
That dial and the way the markers catch the light makes for quite a look. The width of the bracelet, especially with very minimal tapering really kills it for me though. Good thing I didn’t have $8,400 anyway haha
The non tapering bracelets in the evolution 9 line watches is a BIG mistake imo. Makes the watches look so much chunkier than they are I don't mind their clasps without micro adjustments. GS half links are actually 3/4 of a standard link so by combining you can actually get a really good fit. I only adjust my GS bracelets once a year (summer to winter) I actually enjoy having a smaller, less bulkier clasp too. The bracelets are muchore comfortable than the one in my BB58
I have a number of great watches, the watch I wear every day is my GS Snowflake. Just a fantastic watch that my AD sized for me and fits perfectly. Made of Titanium and incredibly light.
Zaratsu polishing is used for the case. The indices and hands use diamond tools and funky mirror tools during the polishing to make sure that the reflections are correct. The case polishing is very special in that one actually can have outside objects reflect so perfectly that the watch partly disappears.
This is so much better from GS. I have a GS watch and LOVE them. Their sports line has always been poor to me... size mainly.... This however is pure class- keep going on this vein GS.
Southern complements: Bless your heart: you can’t help being a little slow Bless your little heart: you can’t help being slow Bless your precious little heart: you’re hopelessly slow:)
I think it's a stunner. But, as you say, micro adjustments is must on a bracelet of this quality. It really can be the difference between loving and liking a watch.
@@davidr2802 Not if you like bracelets. I can take them or leave them personally, but your comment to me is kind of arrogant and silly. If the price of the watch includes the bracelet, and the watch isn't cheap, I want a good bracelet.
Great video!! I wanted this watch the moment I saw GS advertise it. Had a chance to try it on in Vegas last month... and it just didn't scratch that 'itch' you describe. Case shape and overall design are great, but the bracelet and lack of on the fly macro-adj clasp just doesn't do it for me. Not at the price point they want. Had they used the same macro adj that IWC or Glashutte Original does I'd own this now. Add a 22-18mm taper to the braclet and you might have the perfect GMT watch.
Thanks for that Swiss lever escapement joke out of nowhere, I'll just send you the invoice for my new keyboard as the old one is now covered in the water I was drinking
I struggle with Grand Seiko (saying this having never owned one...). But, every time I try one on I can't help thinking my SARB035 is basically just as good... Great video as always though!
Another great video! I have a GS GMT as well, and love it. I agree though on the naming issues! Mine is the spring drive one. No, not the dressy one, the sports one. With the bezel. No, not sapphire, ceramic. Not 44mm, it's 40.5mm. No, not black or blue, it's the uh...green one. Yeah sure it looks black in some lights, but I assure you it's green. 🤷♂️
Thickness is a problem for this and most other fancy movements. Because it may wear impressively and look great at the AD, living with that thickness over the long term is where these are going to be properly measured for their worth. Two of my most rewarding watches to wear are the Grand Seiko SBGP007 and the Sinn 836. One is average in size, while the other is big and only belongs on big-wristed folk. Heck, the latter is over 180g on bracelet. But they are thin and they hug the wrist. They don't create noticeable torque against the wrist. So as much as Grand Seiko wants to position these SBGE285/283 models as a GADA everyday watch, in my experience they won't stand a chance,
I'm loving that GS is finally including lume! Snowflake, Shunbun etc don't have lume. Don't these people want to know the time after the sun goes down?
BTW, the _”mist”_ part of “mist flake” name comes (much like the snowflake) from the foggy mist in the surrounding mountain landscape outside their manufacturing center in Japan.
Any "normies" in the comments raise your hands. I Kinda wish they would offer their models like this and maybe the green birch with strap instead of bracelet options as I'd never wear one of theirs after having tried a few on. Is it wrong to be annoyed to have to spend several hundred more for something you'd only keep for resale value? Anyway. I'll stop ...I love the look of this one Evan !
Once Grand Seiko give their bracelets better taper, and their clasps get better on-the-fly microadjustments, it'll be the complete package. If they ever decide to give their watches screwdown crowns... it is over man. Thats probably the greatest watch in the world, pound for pound.
The watches are lovely but for goodness sake make some good bracelets. At this price point I’d like to see an IWC or Glasshutte style microadjustment. Beautiful watch but I agree on the fact that GS watches always have a few drawbacks. It is always " almost right" or " what if" . The bracelet is too wide and should be tapered. Also the clasp lacks micro adjustment. For a steel or ti bracelet this is a flaw at this pricepoint imho. The watches are also a little bit too thick at size 41mm. Make the watch a little bit bigger at 42mm or make it thinner to make the dimensions right. The Seiko box has a nice colour but the inside is poor. I find it always disappointed when I open a Seiko box for the first time and the watch is flipped in the box because of that poor pillow.
That bracelet is unacceptable for that kind of money, period. Give me at least the option to buy the watch on a strap…and the 22mm lugs width really kill this GS series, such an inelegant choice. Thank you for saying it loud and clear, justice is done.
Indices and hands are too shiny, it messes with the legibility, but i love it! My only issue with owning this watch is gs could've added diver clasp with quick adjustment - or micro adjustment- that were introduced in other models. Such a waste of potential.
This one has a lot to like, but it’s just a bit off. The overall grey mist vibe works, but there is too much visual weight with that bracelet…. they should have stuck with 20mm.
I absolutely love gs watches I just wish they make the bracelet as nice as patek or rolex or omega since I dont like leather straps and straps with materials like fabric make the watch feels cheap ughhh
Because GS is so meticulous on details, I am too: I only like the watches with the blunt tipped hands (like this one). I know, it's ridiculous. But so is this hobby.

That bracelet is unacceptable for that kind of money, period. Give me at least the option to buy the watch on a strap…and the 22mm lugs width really kill this GS series, such an inelegant choice. Thank you for saying it loud and clear, justice is done.

Great video as always! What’s the reference on the far left at 7:32?
SBGX091. See my Instagram.
Nice review. By the way, do you still have your SBGM221? Loved that video.
Long gone
favorite gs you have seen? Handled the sbga413 spring btw?@@YoureTerrific
Any thoughts on sbga413?
Honestly after trying on their smaller models, I really don't like how massive their sportier watches are.
Indices and hands are too shiny, it messes with the legibility, but i love it! My only issue with owning this watch is gs could've added diver clasp with quick adjustment - or micro adjustment- that were introduced in other models. Such a waste of potential.
Chef's kiss 👌👌

This one has a lot to like, but it’s just a bit off. The overall grey mist vibe works, but there is too much visual weight with that bracelet…. they should have stuck with 20mm.
I absolutely love gs watches I just wish they make the bracelet as nice as patek or rolex or omega since I dont like leather straps and straps with materials like fabric make the watch feels cheap ughhh
Very nice dial. I'm still not a fan of their clasp design. They can do better. The movement also isn't amazing looking for $8.4k.
Evan, don’t do it! It’s just the green “mist” that is alluring. You have been spellbound. Oh, what the heck go on then, if you must?
Because GS is so meticulous on details, I am too: I only like the watches with the blunt tipped hands (like this one). I know, it's ridiculous. But so is this hobby.
Grand Seiko COULD be my favorite brand. Except for the lack of micro adjustment. I just don't understand

No 5days for GMT?
Nice review! They need to move “Spring Drive” to the back of the watch, I don’t like seeing that so in your face.
