I’m 64 years-old, and have been a widow for twelve years. I’ve been dating off and on, and have been coloring my own hair so men would find me more attractive. I looked in the mirror a few days ago, took a glimpse of the gray hairs creeping in, and said to heck with it…I’m going gray. I don’t care what men think anymore. It’s about what I think!

I’m literally sitting here with hair dye NOT wanting to dye my hair and going through RUclips videos of people going gray. This video helped me a lot. I realized it’s normal to feel like you’re DONE with color yet you’re side-eying the box of color. Thank you for making me feel normal vs feeling like I’m undermining my decision.

I totally understand. It's been 2 years since I used store bought chemical dyes. It was drying out my hair so much. I used to use chemical dyes, now I use plant based ones like Henna from Morocco Method; the medium brown. Eventually, I will begin to embrace my gray.

I’m back... 🙂 Good news is I now feel completely done with color. I have about one inch of gray and now I’m totally looking fwd to chopping off all the black.
I’m kinda grateful I colored for 25 years because I suddenly realized I can go instant silver. I discovered I’m WAY past the transition phase as my roots are pretty much silver ALL over my head. I actually love all the shiny silver curls I’m suddenly seeing everywhere! Who knew!!! 😀
So I really just need to chop the black off and boom! Silver diva baby! 🙂 I work from home so I’ve been mostly in a baseball cap. Come January I plan to chop the black off, ditch the cap and rock a fierce “silver diva” haircut with zero black other than whatever little is left between the silver. It’ll be my New Years gift to myself. Cant wait! 😀 Thanks to all the silver divas on RUclips who boosted my confidence along the way! 🙏🏼

My “decision” moment came when at 52, my colorist told me I could go gray at seventy. I thought 18 more years of coming here every four weeks?! Forget it! I never went back. I was driving when I called to cancel my next three appointments. When I hung up, I yelled “I’M FREE!!!” I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the process. Year and a half and it’s all grown out. My skin looks sooo much prettier next to the silver instead of the dye 😀😀😀. I’ve gotten compliments from the start

thats so rude the colorist just wanted to make more money of you so you would come back for 20 years!! like grey hair is only normal at 70....come on! Thats is so not true, grey hair in your late 20's and 30's is much more common then people think. If no one started dying their hair and spending much money on the salons we would have seen all sorts of people from all sorts of ages with grey and white hair. It would have been a normal color like the color of your eyes or skin. Its cool and looks like fairytale hair to me on young people and also on older people. It gives so much character and charm.

My younger sister criticised me for not colouring my hair anymore. I ignored her, went through a weird two tone time for awhile but was determined hairdressers had made enough money from me, let my hair grow long then had the last bits of brown cut off. I now have long, healthy silver hair..no fancy shampoos, often get compliments (at 69) and my sister, still home colouring her hair an unnatural auburn, looks ten years older than me. Attitude counts, plus I have earnt every silver hair I have.

I'm so glad you said there's no one way to go grey. When I did it , I knew that I wouldn't be able to stand the grow out. I had seen some photos of young celebrities who had colored their hair grey ( Michelle Williams, Kelly Osborne) so I knew there was a way to do that. I talked to a stylist and she said she could do the process for me, so I went for it. I walked into the salon with brown hair and a few hours later I walked out with grey hair. I love it, and I know that process was right for me. I've had women criticize me for using "chemicals" (as if dying your hair isn't chemicals?) and taking "the easy way," as if living through the months of grow out is some kind of badge of courage. Everybody's different, and as you say in the video there are many different paths to take and ways to go about it. I did it my way, and others may do something different but it's always what's right for the individual.

You are right. Everyone is different. I tried the completely natural route for over 2 years but got a bit depressed with the darker areas of grey that I wasn't used to. I had always had lighter hair and was shocked at how dark the grey came in. Eventually I got some highlights in the T-section, which completely lifted the look, made me feel a lot better - and the bonus is now the roots are growing in a lighter shade of silver that matches the highlights! It's all a matter of taste, patience and inviduality.

I see the persons skin tone and the shade of gray that ended up being their natural color matter so much. Gray can be a darker gray, yet still lighter than brown dye, so it does soften. Some gray turns out solid white almost, stunning, but not so much if your skin is the palest color in your race, washes some out. BTW, yours is really pretty in your thumbtack pic.

I went grey about five years ago.. I was surprised and delighted that my new hair was healthier and thicker than my horrible crunchy dyed style. And then just around Christmas this year I got a bit bored by it so I asked my, very young, hairdresser for her opinion. She said that many people would pay to have my colour and not to to dream of changing it!
I was really pleased and grateful for her support. Then I asked two female friends and two male friends for their opinion. The women advised me to colour my hair but, surprisingly the men said they liked the grey. I feel I am more authentic with with my natural colour. Plus my hair is healthier! So I am sticking to it. Healthy grey hair is better and is, I believe, more youthful than artificial ,dyed and crispy locks. Now , when I see others with dyed hair I notice, which I didn’t before, the condition, and I am glad I am no longer putting my hair through those damaging processes.

I used Dr Bronner Castile soap. It strips color out of hair. I would wash my hair with Dr Bronner, rinse then use my own shampoo & conditioner. You can use just Dr Bronner alone but I don’t have luck with it on my fine hair. It took some color out with each shampoo. I never had the visible root problem. I have fine hair and used to wash my hair every morning before work. The color was completely washed out in less than a month. Now I’m older and retired without the oily hair I had to wash so often.
I’m actually thinking about having a little hair fun. Next week I’m going to my Mom’s (93 years young). We are going to use a temporary purple. I’m a little scared it will be more than temporary but I planning on having fun with my mom. We have been getting more & more depressed not being able to go out since this pandemic. I hope this little bit of silliness will cheer us up. If you see two old ladies with purple hair that may be us. Wish us a little joy & I will wish it right back.

Denise, I thought I was the only one that used Dr. Bronner for hair shampoo. I don't use it all the time, but it's excellent for that 1-2X a month wash that will help dissolve the oils and dead skin off of the scalp. It's important to mention that it's good to wash the hair 2X in a row. The first time it loosens the yuck and the second time it washes it away. Followed by washing with my regular shampoo and conditioner.

But...I’m noticing my hair texture is getting coarser and curlier! Yikes! It’s only been about 4 months so I’ll have to wait and see. Not that I’ll go back to coloring my hair, just finding a product to tame it. Oh, and of course a new hair style Onward ladies!

I am 61 and went gray 21 months ago. When a was ready. I decided to have highlights to soften the general look. I am a city counseller and quite often on TV when interviewed for one of my dossier. So i had some pressure to postpone my decision for after my politician life! But i resisted. And am so happy i did!
If i have one little counsel to give it would be when silver, the need for a very good haircut is i think very important. And that choice seems to me crucial for a modern and youthfull look. But of course it is my humble opinion.

My gray was so dye resistant that I had to leave the boxed dye on so long. - I couldn’t (or wouldn’t) pay for a professional job every 5 weeks- it would be way too dark for my aging skin color. I thought maybe I’ll go blonde again? But my sister has not colored her hair since her cancer treatments and she looks fabulous! So I’m about 9 mons in. It was the right call for me. It’s long right now and I wear it up a lot. When the gray gets about jaw length, I going to get a great cut. You look beautiful silver. Killer. ❤️👍

Going through the 1-2 years it takes to get your hair totally grown out can be very stressful when you don't like the look of the "skunk" grow out. I guess giving it a few months for approximately 2-3 inches of growth is a good test since you cannot fully visualize a full head of gray hair by looking at one inch. Then decide. Thank you for the video!

I am about half way there! My gray is actually white and pretty, but I hate the demarcation line where my brown dye starts. I am 74, but was not quite ready for this. I have scalp problems and had to stop using dye, so it was not my actual choice. The wonderful support and feedback I am getting from friends and family has really helped me a lot, however. My hairdresser really helped me. I changed from a permanent hair color to temporary. My hair was long and I kept the temp color in until my hair completely grew out. Then I slowly let the temp color wear out with each wash. It was the easiest transition ever. I will never go back. Now I go every 12 weeks for a cut. It's great.

I have been going back and forth trying to go grey for the last 2years. I would let it go grey, change my mind color , then change again. My last hair color was last July. I had an appointment to have my hair color in October, but my hairdresser ended having a stroke so she cancel my appointment. Then the salon closed. Now her salon has reopen, but she still not able to return. So, I finally went in to get my hair cut short, all all that was left was my grey hair. I love it. My skin looks lighter and my skin has soften and it makes me look younger, so I decided not to color it anymore. I absolutely love it. Thanks for the tips.

I found a way to help me grow out my silver. Use a hair topper! You can get one to match your grow out color and wear it while your growing out the gray. Nobody will see the “line of demarcation”. I got a hair topper from Godivas Secret Wigs and its a perfect match. Nobody will see my grey growing
out at least until it gets halfway. This will get me over that “hump” I think.

My last color would have been March 10 but I decided to wait until the next week, on Monday March 16 the governor declared the shutdown. So glad I waited since during that time I decided to stop coloring, I had been going lighter since I knew the day would come eventually. My stylist is using a rinse to blend what's left of my light blond into my natural color. Another hair cut or two and that should be gone, also getting it cut into longer layers so my hair looks and feels much thicker. I'm loving it!!!

I guess I really don't see why there is such a hang up about going gray. To me, this is nothing more than a change in the seasons of life. To put it off is like being deceitful...not just to yourself. Be who you are, no matter what color your hair is or becomes. Yeah, I know, this is going to meet some flak, always does. I stopped dying my hair over 10 years ago and do not regret it. It is liberating. My decision was easy for me and my family was supportive in it. Even my children said, "just let it go, Mom."

I started to go grey in my 40’s so decided to dye my dark brown hair blonde; I did this over several years, initially at the hairdressers and then on my own and eventually because of the white/ grey coming through I was able to achieve a beautiful multi-tonal blonde, with box dye. I dyed it blonde for 15 years until one morning I looked at my roots and thought I wonder what my natural hair looks like. I threw the box dye away, grew it out for a few months and then had a pixie cut. I never looked back, I absolutely love it, it’s still multi- tonal, very light grey and in superb condition, every hairdresser I’ve visited has said what a beautiful colour it is.
