One thing to remember is your turret shoots at whoever you shoot, so if you want that genji or tracer to be targeted, right click them once just for the hitmarker, since its way easier than landing a normal projectile. Other than that I use it any time someone is close really since it does more damage and is harder to miss. Also if you manage to full blast into the head, it can one shot 250 hp targets but you do need to hit every pellet.
You have to look at the situation how you notice when to switch play the game and get feeling with it pluse commen sens . You woudnt us a shotgun to snip somebody

Cool, builder characters need a huge rework, turrets shouldnt be there for the whole time. They should last 15 - 20 seconds at max, and a longer cool downs. Also if torb and sym die, the turrets should get destroyed too.
Or, just shoot the turrets. I do think Sym's turrets should get a penalty on stacking dmg/slow though. Waiting for someone to walk into your microwave and then hitting them with a single right click while they literally cannot move is not fun, interactive gameplay.

any torb mains that could help me out, how often do you use shotgun? is it better to just use primary fire all the time?
When you can't hit a Mercy flying around you right click
If your aim is good, you usually only use shotgun on bigger targets like tanks at mid-close range.

As a gm torb main I rarely shotgun, I mostly primary fire as you don’t need to reload as much EX: shooting gold orisa
