The game doesn’t play like real chess so I’m not sure how well one can learn the rules of chess from it.
Pieces move with different cooldown times, you never set up the board in the classic configuration, pawns can move in any direction, and other perks that completely change the rules of the game.
I love how Arin was decent at the start and then his skill gradually went down as time progressed.
it's really funny how Arin somehow manages to understand less about how roguelikes in general play as the game progresses

Yes you can, you just have to use up your 2 warnings first.
@@lyianx you can, but it will only let you shoot without warning if they're right next to you, And if you can kill them in one shot, otherwise it warns you that it's a bad idea.

If you're not paying close enough attention, you can kill a piece that instantly puts you in check with another piece, immediately ending the game. The game doesn't warn you about that.

There's so many chess variants, it makes me sick.
One that I have played is nuke chess. Play normal, but when piece gets captured, it blows up everything in the eight neighboring squares.
Straightforward variant, very fast to play.

That says arc, not acc. A lower fire arc actually increases your accuracy, since your bullets will be more concentrated.
If the Grumps can see this, and you’re planning another episode, if you’re in check, you can still shoot a piece to get out of it, there are just two shield icons by your ammo count that kinda protect you from doing it by accident
If your aim is true, it can save runs by just picking off the king, even if he’s one space away
This was so frustrating to watch, just shoot him! He's not gonna move if he's not shaking! Could have taken 15 minutes off this video haha

Well, the game IS about a king who lost everything at chest and got his shotgun to take as many of its enemies into oblivion with him as he could before his final checkmate. That's basically Arin's chess spirit animal.
I'm gonna say it before finishing the video... Arins got this chess win in the bag! (I have money on you Arin, I'm out of options and if you don't pull in a win for me I'm gonna be financially ruined. My house, my kids, and my wife will leave me and will have nothing left..) Good luck!

It is amazing how thoroughly Arin misunderstood every single mechanic
It's even more impressive that he genuinely isn't *_trying_* to do this. People like to make up that he's "obviously exaggerating it for the sake of a bit" but like, no. He's really just THAT inept at understanding the functions of a video game.
Like, it's truly a talent how amazingly bad he can be at video games sometimes. The only thing that makes it annoying to watch is when Arin starts trying to defend his pride by acting like it's somehow always the video game's fault when there's nothing to do with lag, very rarely anything to do with misinterpreting information, & just flat out ignoring all in game advice given to him.

Huh, who knew Arin could be so good at chess if we gave him a shotgun and take all his other pieces. Must be the Floridan in him with the shotgun.
I think it's because then you only have to pay attention to the other team--you don't have to pay nearly as much attention to your own side since there's only one guy to protect.
This really does accentuate Arin's inability to pay attention to how a game's rules work and I love it!

Why do I want a whole series of this? This is so interesting and well thought out! Took me a while to understand the damage rules, but dang if this doesn't feel like a simple-to-understand, difficult-to-master awesome experience of a game.

6 hours ago I found out my cancer is back. I'm stunned and definitely in shock.
This will sound stupid but seeing a new Game Grumps makes me feel better. Yes the next 14 months are going to be awful. But ewe won't have to get through it without laughter.

@@yoyoyoyo-lq4jb I appreciate the well wishes. This was/is definitely one of those emergency-brake moments where life suddenly stops and everyone holds their breath. I'm not as worried as I figured I'd be but the next year is gonna be rough.
I'm just glad to have stuff like this to laugh it off with. Game Grumps helped a lot when this happened 8 years ago, I'm sure it'll be awesome to have this time too :)

Really, Dan should play basically everything. Even when he's failing, he's more entertaining than Arin. His solo episodes are all the best they have, and I've rewatched them more than the standard episodes, I'm sure.

Dan actually improves at games as he plays them, even though he might have some difficulty at the start. Arin gets progressively worse at any game he plays, as evidenced by both this episode, and the majority of episodes on this channel.

I now want nothing more than to see a 10 minute power hour where Dan walks in with a chess set, and Arin walks into frame holding a pump-action shotgun.

Over the last month or so, this has become my absolute favorite game to turn on for about 10 minutes, get mad at, shut down, and then go right back in again maybe half an hour later…

Might I recommend FPS Chess, it's exactly what it sounds like and I love it, a 1v1 game of chess where battles are determined by your gamer skill.

I feel like this game could quite possibly be actually played on a board with the pieces, a special deck of cards, and some sort of ruler.
I love this game! It is such a unique spin on chess. I have sunk so many hours into this game.
So Arin needed to fight AIs instead of Dan and have a gun to win a game of chess. XD

Its awesome seeing this game blow up, one of my favorite youtubers whos quite smaller than GameGrumps uploaded a whole series of it (Aliensrock) that I loved
Dan predicted this on checkers. Said being kinked was like getting a gun.
So just as some information for people who aren't familiar with this game, there are a couple rules that aren't immediately obvious. The first one is the shields by your ammunition, those Shields will protect you two times from doing a move that would leave you vulnerable to being captured on your opponent's turn, however you can choose to ignore those if you believe that shooting will kill the piece that would have killed you. As we saw at the very beginning of this episode however, this will not protect you if you killing a piece is what put you into jeopardy in the first place. The other thing I figured I would bring up feels like it should be somewhat obvious but I've seen multiple people now not realize it: on the left side of the screen when you aren't moused over an enemy piece you can see your stats, which includes how much damage you deal on average, your effective range, your firing arc, and other miscellaneous things that get added to your shots. Trying to fire at enemies outside of your effective range will greatly reduce how much damage you deal.
Arin: picks up card that makes you stronger at range.

I'm not clear on what the shields are for. Sometimes, it's "you can't do that, because you're in check!", and sometimes it just let's you lose.
Compare 21:52 to 23:52. The first one just kills him even though he has both shields, the second one eats a shield and says "you can't do that".

I haven't watched game grumps in years but I have returned from the store to tell you that a game exists called 5d chess with time travel mechanics. It's designed to make you want to die. I love it.
It does not matter how hard any game tries to jingle the tutorial keys, nor how absolutely minimal the information on screen is, Arin will ignore it all. It could flash huge red letters on the screen that say "Try double jumping", and Arin would get stuck and get mad because he only read "Try" and then took a wander through his mind palace for a few seconds before returning to our dimension.
Why do RUclipsrs nowadays just click random things, skip tutorials, ignore the GUI, and then proceed to claim that the game is unclear? It's unbelievably infuriating!
They should play the 5D (Actually 4D) Chess game with time travel.
