- One night you might decide
You want to sleep so deep that you rise into the sky
One moment everything becomes clear
You want the sun to stop shining so bad
That you just close your eyes
Oh, no - it's not the worst thing you can do
Oh, no - might be the only thing you can do
When the sky comes falling down
When the sky comes falling down
One morning you might look at yourself
And see your shadow has left you and you're at the end
You're at the end
You discover you've stopped dreaming at night
And the man that you saw as a child
Is misshapen and bent
Oh, no - it's not the worst thing you can do
Oh, no - might be the only thing you can do
When the sky comes falling down
When the sky comes falling down
One moment everything becomes clear
You want the sun to stop shining so bad
That you just close your eyes
Oh, no - it's not the worst thing you can do
Oh, no - might be the only thing you can do
When the sky comes falling down
When the sky comes falling down
Thank you Moe Berg for giving us gems like this one.
Mike THANKS for having put this up!! Good Lord... a truly BOMBASTIC LP, especially when you consider all the SHIT that was taking over Indie Rock at that time. STILL ROX!!!!
Still love this album after hundreds of listens back in the day. Background vocals in the chorus really make this song for me.
What do you think the background vocals are saying? It sounds amazing.
nycavguy One of the great mysteries in rock history. It's pretty clear what Leslie & Kris are singing-- The words "Open D -- Open E."
(It is a lot easier to realize this if you're a guitarist trying to figure out the chords, because you're saying then to yourself in your head at the same time.)
The great mystery is WHY they're singing this, because they AREN'T the chords the band is playing . They are, respectively, Open G, Open D, Open A and Open E, and the vocals sing "Open D" over the G and A, and "Open E" over the D and E.
My theory: The chords for that chorus are REALLY unusual: I-V-II-VI (all major-- in a song in the key of G, the II and the VI should be minor chords). If you try to rehearse the song-- unless you concentrate really hard-- your brain (which anticipates the usual chords) will cause your fingers to grab the wrong chords.
When a bandmate does that consistently in a rehearsal-- disrupting everyone else when it happens-- one of the other players will eventually get frustrated and shout the correct chords at you until you remember.
I'm guessing they eventually turned the shout into the backing vocals, killing two birds with one stone.
Also, since Privettricker probably won't do a video for the song, here are a couple of notes:
1. To get this to sound right, glue the third finger of you left hand to the D on the second (B string). The chords for the verse and pre-chorus are:
Open G with that extra D (spelled G-B-D-G-D-G, or 3-2-0-0-3-3, if you're a tab-only type)
C9 (X-C-E-G-D-G or x-3-2-0-3-3)
Open D (X-X-D-A-D-F# or x-x-0-2-3-2). ..
2. The tricky pre-chorus is that G to an E minor 7 riff to the C to the D. To get this right::
A. Play the G chord twice, using your second finger on the low E, your first on the A, your third on the B and your pinky on the E.
B. Remove your second finger from the sixth string , and immediately put it on the second fret of the first string (behind the fourth finger). This gives you an Em7 (E-B-D-G-D-G, or 0-2-0-0-3-3). Hit that twice.
C. For the tricky part, lift up the fourth finger. This is an Em9, (E-B-D-G-D-F# or 0-2-0-0-3-2). Hit that twice.
D. Put the fourth finger back on the third fret of the first string, restoring the Em7 and hit it once.
This sounds tricky, and it takes a while, but the minute you can do it half-speed, you'll realize he's just doing the D-Dsus4-D wiggle that the Byrds made a living on.
Then just go to the C and the D.. Chorus is just G-D-A-E with no tricks other than the extra D in the G chord.
That's a very cool theory to the background of the amazing background singing of this song :) And yes, *_it's clearly "open D open E". I used to think "no, that can't be it, it makes no sense". So the closest thing I could come up with was "hopeful Dee, opening". Rolling my naked eyes! That didn't make sense either. Love this song!_* @@RohitSatoskar
