Another great journey through a WC! It was an incredible one, I still remember the whole hype : Panini albums filled out days before the tournament, news of an Asian nation talking about taking a collective break during the cup, Brazilians making an improvised statue of Ronaldinho (only to burn it down after the quarterfinal loss)...those were the days... Btw, Grosso's tears, cheeky Ronaldo's wink, and unfortunately brutal Zidan's headbut all marked this tournament
Ahhhh, football stickers. Those were the days. Yeah, there were some incredible moments this tournament. Grosso celebration is probably my favourite. Zidane head butt was def the most shocking tho.
Thanks a lot. I want to eventually branch out to other sports, but for now, I'll stick to football, and the EUROs make the most sense to do next I think.
@@Trancymindand that’s how you get maybe the greatest star in thr world right now in Mbappe? It’s so strange how USA is regarded as more racist than Europe but the overt kind of racism of the lepens would make our most overt politicians blush
I am probably biased as an Italian, but I always found it unfair how, when other World Cup wins are discussed, the topic is "that time (team) won the World Cup", but it seems like 2006 is "that time Zidane lost the World Cup". There's always this vibe that, when Italy wins something, either there's a scandal behind it, or it is treated as if it was the opponent's bad luck. PS: it's surprisingly refreshing to hear "Calciopoli" pronounced the way it should, every once in a while
I certainly don't mean for it to come across as Italy didn't deserve to win. Italy was better than France through the tournament. France was really poor in the group stages. I do highlight the Zidane headbutt, but that's pretty much because it is the moment that most fans think of when talking about 2006 final. I actually prefer the Grosso goal and celebration personally. Also, in terms of Italy's world cup wins, being opponents bad luck. This isn't me trying to discredit your wins but actually emphasising how good you guys are when your back is against the walls. The 82 and 06 wins show to me how strong you guys are when you develop that we will show them mentality when little is expected of you. Same with the Euros win in England recently.
I think it’s because Italy in recent history never had a dominant team, at least not since the 30s. Italy won the World Cup in 82 and then didn’t win anything until winning it in 06. And then in the last 4 world cups they haven’t gotten past the group stage. Despite winning the euros in 2021.
@@TheSportsFiles-mm1kg Italy, as a matter of fact, was one of the most unlucky teams in the last 30 years. 1990 = PK loss in WC semifinals (after our GK allowed for the 1 - 1 with a mistake) ... surely will be luckier next time! 1994 = PK loss in WC final ..... another PK loss, and this time in the final, with Baggio's iconic mistake! .... but next time, we will have more luck! 1998 = PK loss in WC quarter finals (yes, 3 PK losses in 3 consecutive World Cups!). We will have our revenge next time! 2000 = Loss to Golden Goal in EURO final (after being ahead for most of the game. This is what we get after 3 consecutive PK loss). Wow, our luck! 2002 = Knocked out by corrupt South Korea ........ wow! 2004 = Knocked out of Group stage by goal difference ..... didn't do well in group stage okay, but our luck still played a role! 2006 = finally .... a bit of luck? I think we deserved it, considering we could have won a lot more in the previous years? :) In order for us to finally win a WC ..... we had to conceed 0 goals throughout all tournament from active play. Only conceeding from a PK and from an own goal ..... If you look at Euro 2020 .... we still had Belgium, Spain and England (not exactly an easy run). I'd say we underachieved if anything :)
I think this is the world cup most people here remember as their first tournament. I remember watching some games live, especially the Battle of Nuremburg is still in mind to this day. But nonetheless this tournament was the new German breakthrough.
Yeah, it's interesting how often that happens. There are examples where they go on to win it as well. Italy 82 is one. They were really poor in the groups. Even West Germany in 74 wasn't that good in the groups. Losing to East Germany.
It's a pretty good selection. One small correction. You meant 1954, not 1958, for the Miracle of Bern and the highest scoring. 1958 was when Brazil won their first World Cup.
Zidane had been a very rough player all along, with 14 reds as an offensive midfielder. In case you didn't know, he's also a record holder for the most cards in World Cup finals, 2 reds and 4 yellows. He has skills, but there are many more players much greater than him. Henry is another who deserves a mention. He may not have been the lead in the glorious days of that era of France, but for me, he is at least far better than a certain M'bappe who just has speed and strength as his main skills. At least Henry is more of a good all rounder compared to him. The 2006 Brazil by the way, had been described as the greatest since 1982, but that is something I totally disagreed with, especially when the left and right backs are 34 and 36 years old respectively and the coach tried to play two strikers and two offensive midfielders, leaving the flanks for the aged Carlos and Cafu. They would have been different had Belletti been picked as first choice and had they strengthen the midfield with a peak Gilberto Silva (alongside Emerson) while pushing Ze Roberto or Juninho to the right wing. But anyway that's just a moot. This Italy was just impressive that they won it with penalty (which they had been so afraid of doing since 1990). The only blemish is Maldini retiring just one WC ago, when he still has the gas to win another Champions League just a year later with pretty much a combination of the 2002 and 2006 World Cup winning teams.
Yeah, Zidane had an angry side to him. It really contradicted his style of football, which was so beautiful. Henry is a fantastic player. One of my favourites. I agree on this Brazil side. On paper the 2006 team was full of stars. But multiple were past their prime. Cafu and Carlos for sure. Ronaldo as well. Even Adriano wasn't at his best. I feel for Maldini. He arrived too late for 1982 and left too early for 2006.
@@TheSportsFiles-mm1kg Actually one more thing to that Brazil is that they felt they have won it before they have won it. Ronaldinho was also way underperforming and Kaka was injured, if remember correctly. It is a recurring problem for Brazil since then, and it always made me wonder what Neymar and Tite were thinking when they over celebrate victories over group games just to fall short when it matters.
I understand ZiZi, probably would have done the same to Materazzi. But ZiZi maybe should have thought of his team before making that head butt. I'm not saying its (self restraint) easy but that was necessary.
Unfortunately, he didn't think. It was an instant reaction. He has always had that moment of rage in him. He got himself sent off in the 1998 world cup too with a violent tackle. But yes, he should have restrained himself.
That headbutt is probably the most shocking moment I've seen in a world cup.
Yeah, I'll never forget that moment. I couldn't believe what Zidane had done.
It’s quite sad that’s all Zidane will be remembered for along with his 2002 UCL volley
@@John17489Agree..his undeniable talent was largely overshadowed by his temperament throughout his career. This headbut was just a peak of an iceberg
Despite being goalless for 119 minutes that Germany vs. Italy semi-final was a really good game of football.
Yes, it was a really good game of football. Both teams had a lot of chances to score.
It was the best match of the tournament, it should have been the final.
Two of the best World Cup matches were a semi final between Germany and Italy

Yeah, it's an incredible defence and goalkeeper. Even that penalty in the final was quite a soft call. It can be argued that it was not a penalty.

It's even more incredible because I think Zidane said later he decided to do that as he ran up to hit. So it was a last second decision.

That was a big strength of this squad. Everyone chipped in. There was no singular player they heavily relied on. Especially in attack.
