  • How to GAP Circle Shark Surf Fishing Hooks - A DISCUSSION - Mustad Fishing Hook . One of the fun things I like to do is surf shark fishing. One of the most important pieces of gear is the hook when it comes to shark fishing. I like to use the Mustad 39960 Circle Hook but I am sure the hooks you use for shark are just as well. One thing you need to do and most important is Gap the hook. I also make sure to sharpen right afterwards. You need to make the distance from the shank to point a tad bigger I briefly show you how to do this in this video.
    When surf fishing for shark it is important to carry several sizes of hooks as well. Start small and finish big that makes for a great day of fishing. Be sure to gap the Mustad hook it will accommodate the big chunk baits you throw for them nicely. Most all that is shown on a proper gapped hook is an eye and point. If you would pick one size hook for surf shark fishing it would be the Mustad 39960 - 14/0. You will catch smaller and bigger shark the like. Keep in mind many sizes are better though.
    I could carry a bait fishing hook conversation for hours on end. Bait hooks and bait fishing is more intricate and personal the casting I believe. Be sure you use a sharp hook but many folks think a dull circle is better then a sharp circle. Thanks as always for watching and hope you enjoyed the video as much as we did making it.

    Dies this not weaken it (making it easier to straighten)

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  7 лет назад +1

      That is a great question, it will certainly weaken it. I have broke them in the process. I work them slow back and forth let the metal heat up on its on. some people prefer a torch or heat it first with a light then take it all at once. I have NEVER had on break opn a fish so I say your good to go doing it like this. keep in mind the 16/0 will take a bit of time to do. Again GREAT QUESTION!!!

    I was looking at one of my redfish leaders that I bought, and the circle hook's gap wasn't even big enough for my finger to fit through. I hadn't come across this before so I thought it was ok. Luckily I came across your video. You probably saved me a couple of fish. thanks!

    Good video. I use Mustad hooks often for land based shark fishing.I prefer using J-hooks in the 8/0-10/0 size which has been enough for me to land Tiger Sharks bigger than me.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  7 лет назад +2

      They are awesome too the J's I have seen other folks use them and do well but only use them if I am blue or bass fishing but they do work well. You are right though that is enough for fish to 7-8ft. I do prefer the circle that when most sharks take they run and set well. a 12/0 circle would be smaller then a 9/0 when gapped also (gapping is key for shark, tarpon not so much but shark it helps a great deal). Thanks for your input I appreciate always love to hear!

      FishJonesBeach I caught a 8'2" tiger shark on a 10/0 Mustad J-hook and some bullsharks up to +300 pounds on these same hooks,they are definitely hard to bend!

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  7 лет назад +2

      I believe it! I like and only use the circles for sharking I like the run on hookset but I have seen others use the J's no problem! You have excellent points!

    • @Grouperhunter

      FishJonesBeach Both Mustad circle and j-hooks make excellent shark hooks,that's for sure.

      What model do you prefer? I should have mentioned, in NY if you are targeting shark you must use inline circles but I am alswasy looking for a bet6ter J hook for my fishing in general! Thanks for sharing grouperhunter!

  • @Chris-mf7ee
    @Chris-mf7ee 5 лет назад +2

    2 things. Bending weakens spring steel (work hardening) and a less than 90 degree gap makes it actually not a circle hook and increases chances for deep hooking. Just buy the Mustad 39950BN (wide gap circle) then you have exactly what you are trying to make with the 39960.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  5 лет назад +2

      Yea they say it weakens never had a problem with em bending though they are 2X and I have not realized any more gut hooks out of the norm. A circle generally will gut hook more if you use one too small. The Mustad 39950BN is also about 4x the price if not more! Thanks for sharing!

    Great video again . I like the idea of gaping the hook.. I have the exact hooks and tried them but they were difficult to bait and I would constantly loose fish because of the tight gap. But I like your solution and will start using those hooks again....But why would a hook manufacturer make a hook with such a close gap??.. The next question is foe anyone other than myself did these hooks work in it's original shape ???

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  7 лет назад +1

      Great point and question Seymour! Kinda the answer is there. They also need to be sharpened, but some people like dull circles. Some people use narrow gaps. They have this in mind during the manufacturing process. They are widely used also for tarpon with live bait and commercial tuna. That scenario requires a narrow gap. May be that the tuna indutry prefers this shape it is the most widely used hook for long liners around the world. After you gap and see Bic catfishes comment below they take the same shape as a demon circle. HEAT them up if you need to or work slow like I did. I never had one break but one thing I have had to close the eye on top rarely but sometimes you get a batch with a slightly open eye, snelling your fine but wire and a flemish hitch you will need to close it. One thing also I never yank a hook set with circles, i keep an open drag and slowly thumb till i feel full pressure then bring the drag down and let em run till I can turn

      Robert moses actually has the closest walks to the beach. Field 2 sometimes has a red carpet to walk on. Field 6 is a bit of a walk, we2 is the longest. I love bunker! I like to carry a variety of weight from 2-8 ounce. Clam is great too and sometimes squid. Hope that helps

    I got size 14 musted circle hooks in a box of 100 I'm fishing sharks do you really got to gap the hooks never herd of this but I'm new at it i want to fish not play around with hooks

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  2 года назад +1

      No, you dont have to gap them, BUT I have found with big bait you get a better clearance and chance for the hook to catch. With bunker and mackerel the baits wide so putting on a big chunk youll have to squash it in the gap. I like them wide a narrow gap you may miss hook set but they will be more sure.

    Do you need to gap the hooks for stripers?

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  6 лет назад +2

      Thats a great question, if they are large you should be ok but a 12/0 i will gap for stipers. Most of the standard ones expensive like gami have a good gap already the ones shown in the video I will gap size 12/0 is what i would use

    • @kpxraver1
      @kpxraver1 6 лет назад +1

      thanks! do you usually go bigger than 12/0 for bass? I'm thinking of using the gami big eye circle in 8/0, would that suffice?

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  6 лет назад +1

      With the mustads no, the 8/0 gami big is is a good size its about the same size as the mustad 12/0 a 9/0 or 10/0 would be good too for that make but thats a good choice I think they are already gapped
