The song goes on for a while and the rest is actually much sicker. He learned piano for the part but doubt he actually plays in every single hand shot. Josh Henry who plays his friend/backup singer Roger is also a phenomenal vocalist and V Hudge is also great.

They recorded live the music, like it was an actual performance (in a venue and everything) as it shows in the shots where Andrew is sitting in front of a piano. And also made a studio recording, so they can combine the music, when it is in and out of diegesis.
Lin-Manuel Miranda himself said that he treated the score of this film, as if he was workshoping an original musical.

Joshua Henry who sings harmony is a known Broadway actor.
If you watch videos of the real Jonathan Larson, you will see that Andrew Garfield really captures his mannerisms for this film. If you watch the film, they have real clips during the credits.
The films pays homage to Stephen Sondheim as much as to Larson. All of the music was written by Jonathan Larson.

Here’s what Lin said about the directing/ editing process to the LA Times. “I found that editing is similar to composing a theater score: playing with tempo, tension and release; figuring out when to stay in a moment, when to zoom past it and when to return to it. It was the thing I was most scared of but turned out to be incredibly analogous to what I know how to do.” They also discussed the sparse use of instruments keeping actual Broadway constraints in mind.

Recently found out that he initially took piano lessons because he got the part to play as James Rhode (a pianist) for some autobiographical movie, but that project didn’t push thru. He got offered this part by LMM so he took voice lessons as well.
He partially played the piano on some parts but definitely not the full piece. He just knows enough to convince watchers that he’s truly playing the piano. Have the hand placements and body movements right.

Andrew Garfield spent a year learning how to play the piano & sing. Yes it is all him, it’s covered in a great feature with Andrew & LMM discussing the production. Andrew was LMM’s first choice, had to talk him into it and waited for him. Both felt his fear of whether he could pull it off on every take added to the performance as creators feel the same way.

@@JacobRestituto He only actually learnt one or 2 of the songs all the way through on piano and then got the piano coach to teach him the rhythm of the hands and feet so he could "act" the rest of the songs. The vocals though are 100% him.
React to the song "Why" to hear him play piano and sing live on set

Andrew is very passionate about this movie. Jonathan Larson wrote the music and the movie is adapted from a three person stage show that premiered off Broadway in 2001, which was adapted from Jonathan's original rock monologue by the same name. You can find videos of him performing it on RUclips. Jonathan's sister Julie was also a producer on the film and appears briefly at the end.

This song is a mix of live and pre records I think. So far the creators only confirmed Boho and Why as live. Lin requested Andrew to be reasonably believable as a piano player so he can pan from the hands to his face in a scene naturally. Lin said he is always annoyed when somebody is playing piano and it is off with the body movements ie “does not move in time with the music”. So Andrew learned to play enough piano to make this believable.

Why he goes to all that trouble? He once said because he’s lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to have best teachers to teach him these things. If the director or producers offers him those lesson to prepare for the role, he’d take it.

Lin said that from casting Andrew Garfield to the beginning of production was about a year. Andrew learned to sing and play the piano during that time. There were 2 or 3 different scripts for the stage production of Tick Tick Boom, plus a lot of Jonathan Larson's notes ...apparently Lin and the producers went to the library of congress and were given access to his writings. Lin, Steven Levenson and the producers of the movie went through and combined everything into one script and expanded the 3 person stage show into a full feature production.

So stoked you're doing this now--I just watched this film for the first time this week (watched it twice), so this is perfect timing! 😂
I think Netflix only released the short clip version because the whole song (close to 4 minutes) is also interrupted by dialogue scenes to set up important characters/events/stakes (it's the opening number of the movie), so they didn't want to include all of that, i guess? So if you just want the song, probably looking up one of the soundtrack videos on RUclips is your best bet. And yes, all of the music was by Jonathon Larson--Lin has said in an interview that he was determined not to re-write any of Larson's songs. some of them are in a different order/from different versions of the original show/from a different show he wrote, but they're all Larson. (and all worth a listen/reaction, though my personal recommendations are 'Come to Your Senses'/'Why'/'Louder than Words'--or the full version of 30/90!)

all songs are written by jonathan larson (guy who wrote rent)
and yeah lin directed it. Lin was incredibly inspired by Larsons work- Rent is the reason he became a composer so he was the perfect person to direct this movie. It's his first time too so I was thoroughly impressed!

As others have commented, they did a mix of live singing and lip syncing… but they actually had to deal with EXTREMELY strict rules about any live singing done on set as this was shot at the height of the pandemic.
For sound nerds who are interested, here’s a fascinating, super in depth discussion with LMM and the sound team about how they did the recording/mixing:

Sorry if I came off snarky in my last comments 😬
If you are interested there is a much longer version of 30/90 and it’s amazing. Andrew learned both piano and how to sing for this role as well as studying in depth Johnathan Larson’s life, if you watch some videos of Larson and Andrew side by side it’s like they are the same person ☺️

This is just my honest opinion, but reviewing things like this with starting and stopping throughout is completely disruptive to creating a supportive critique. Wasn't anymore than 20 seconds in when you paused to talk about it. Music, art, acting, writing or any form of creating or developing something; let it play all the way through your first time watching it so you can focus on it as a whole and understand the context of everything in it. As well, focusing on nitty gritty details the first time through distracts from paying attention to a composition as a whole. This has been literally one of the first rules in all my video, animation and music classes. Watch it through once, then critique after so you can get the whole story beginning and end, which also shows respect to the artist/person as well. Just a suggestion though. From a viewer standpoint on informal youtube, even still it kinda felt like somewhat like being in a car when you are in the passenger seat trying to teach someone how to drive stick shift for the first time, lol. Not trying to be rude at all so I hope it doesn't come off that way, just being completely honest with my impressions, but it was just like nails on a chalk board to me from all my previous classes and experience in design, video and audio production. Take it as you wish or discard as you like! :)
