thanks for making the videos...this one IN particular. Lots of mumbo jumbo out there. You are one of the few guys that has the experience to tell it as it is. Thanks for answering my flat wire question....head marketing hype...good....mall ninja.....bad...you, real story.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do these videos for us Rob! It gives a real insight into the inner workings and machinations of the 1911, and it's kept simple for slow witted sloths like me.

Could you cover selecting the right poundage, go over what the recoil spring and main spring does and how to match them together…..do a deep dive Rob 😎

There are a lot of variables to take into consideration. I have been considering coming up with a mathematical formula for computing a ballpark with all the parameters taken into account. Things that affect spring choice- Slide Length, Caliber, Firing pin stop profile, Barrel type, muzzle energy, etc. When I mention barrel type, I specifically referring to Bull Barrel vs Conventional style. Bull barrels weigh considerably more than conventional barrels. The barrel weight adds to the overall mass of the reciprocating mass of the equation.

@@RobSchauland1911 Thanks Rob, I realize this would almost require basic gunsmithing classes…I would like to think most of us appreciate you taking the time to share your years of experience and knowledge. Thanks again. I hope your business is doing well 😊

Thank you for the video. I didn't know about the scraping issue with flat wire springs and a GI guide rod. I'll keep that in mind, if I decide to try a flat wire.

I agree that spring rates for recoil and mainsprings for 5" Government and 4.25" Commander length .45 ACP and 9mm would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Rob it would be cool if you did a basic tools video. Alot of us like to tinker with production 1911s. Swapping out mim parts etc. I cant really find a video on what files and stones to buy. Just a thought

Great video, the 1 year replacement recommendation on the chrome silicon type; is that to sell springs or is there degradation on the heat treated over time while installed?
Edit: As others have said, I would also love to see a video on recommended spring weight combinations for “x” type of performance.

Thank you for focusing on this information. Do you think size matters of the firearm installed? Please Correct me if I'm wrong. The original Design 5" 1911, Then commander 4.25", Then the Subcompact Officer size from 4" - 3". The smaller you go on the 1911 more timing, speed, and violent recoil are encountered in 45. It's almost a whole different discussion on 9mm. My view the Chrome Silicon and Flat wire makes a lot of sense especially in Commander size and less. I'm on a journey of learning and have been slowly changing to flatwire on all sizes of 1911. Its part longevity with the main focus of consistency I perceive under recoil from different manufacturer's and sizes. I like smooth Jazz, 1911's, and Cars. 😃 Great Vid.

The less mass in your slide/barrel assembly, the more you need to counteract the muzzle energy with the proper spring rates. Mechanical solutions exist as well. For instance, the flat bottom firing pin stop is a good idea on Commander length and under. Heck, I even use them exclusively on 5" .45's or 10mm's as well.

I've always wondered if you should have a different spring for acp+ vs regular acp. I've looked and never found an answer. Perhaps there isn't one?

Remember, you asked. You showed a frame that was so pristine on the inside, it makes my guns cry. What's your process, and if I can only get one piece of advice, what do you use inside the dust cover of a gnarly, mid-80's Friday Colt that looks like it had a 1/2" bolt threaded into the spring's pathway?
