      Every American we've talked to LOVES these little things, but it's really rare to see them shell out American muscle/classic car build money to make an R5 project happen!

    Wings etc are all available here in France. And Gemini Racing supply all suspension parts plus interior pieces for the rear.
    They are fabulous to drive with the balance running right through the driver. It was important to keep the engine at 6000rpm to get the best out of them. I have driven and raced many of them! A workshop manual is also available. 160hp for the road version, up to 350hp(!) for the Maxi Turbo.

      That's really great info and cool to hear that you got to drive these often. Despite having this project in our shop over the past year, I've never actually ridden in one, so I'm very much looking forward to this firing up. We should be right around the 450HP mark with every handling, suspension and chassis reinforcement mod we could throw at it!

      @@patiencemetalfab of course, it is the customer's choice to make so many modifications to the car. But that loses its authenticity (they're only original once) and would probably reduce rather than enhance its value. Although in the USA I guess that is not important. Why do you not have a drive in his Pearl White version? By today's standards the car is not fast at all, but is the experience of driving a correct, unmodified car from the 80's that is the real buzz.

    • @patiencemetalfab
      @patiencemetalfab  3 месяца назад +1

      @@a310man Restomodding cars is definitely a point of contention and pertains heavily to American Muscle/classic cars here in the US. The trouble with keeping things period correct, is that you're using 50+ year old technology that's worn out, tired and often obsolete. In the case of this Turbo 2, the plan was to keep the engine and its components as original as possible, but it would have been nearly impossible to get to the power and reliability goals the customer wanted. We say to each their own and we'll build it to whatever spec the owner pays us to! Unfortunately I did not get a chance to ride in that one, but I'll do my best to hop in it next time it comes around our shop ❤

    I wouldn't have cut the rear arches off like that, i would have de bonded them from the bodyshell. I have a Renault Clio V6 which has a mid mounted 3.0L V6 engine which was built in the same way as the R5 Turbo and my rear arch extensions are mainly stuck to the bodyshell with a body panel bonding putty.

    • @patiencemetalfab
      @patiencemetalfab  Год назад +1

      That's definitely the way to go if the panels were cleanly-bonded, but we also had to deal with cutting out some fiberglass work. Luckily, Ben has a steady hand and with the clean cut, our body guy will be able to adhere it back on nicely. Good work on your Clio!

    You can find Renault 5 Turbo/Maxi Turbo body parts quite easily in France : MC Racing (French polyester spare parts manufacturer) sells rear fenders for 230€/part, front hood (not engine hood of course!) for 245€, and rear hatch for 200€. They also have polycarbonate lateral and rear windows. There are other manufacturers like Politecnic, Axauto Parts and 3S Développement.
    Renault only produced 20 "real" Group B version of the R5 Maxi Turbo (with specific body panels, aero kit and bumpers) in addition to the 200 road legal 8221 versions that kept the standard body panels and bumpers of the Turbo 1 and 2. Artcurial is a good source for pictures of the street legal 8221. And the rally version competed against the Lancia Rally 037 Evo, the Stratos last win was in the 1981 Tour de Corse because Jean Ragnotti's R5 Turbo 1 had a mechanical failure near the end of this rally.
    BTW, if one day you have the opportunity to work on a 205 Turbo 16 it might be way more hard and expensive to find parts because Peugeot only produced 200 street legal version in addition of the Rally version.

    • @patiencemetalfab
      @patiencemetalfab  Год назад +1

      REALLY good information to have, thank you very much for that! We're hoping after we finish this one up, we'll start getting more of these type of cars through the shop; would love to see a little
      205 Turbo in person one day!

      @@patiencemetalfab I'm happy if I can be helpful in any way with your nice project. Don't hesitate to ping me on this thread if you're looking for some other info.
      There's a great video about Meliard of London company where its boss Olly Meliard is showing a great knowlegde of every R5 Turbo model :
      ruclips.net/video/qatmJtIJAPw/видео.html
      His website under construction is showing the phone number and address of his company.
      You did a fantastic job with the rollcage you built, it's probably the best crafted of any R5 Turbo, Renault Alpine Dieppe factory included.
      I think there are a few 205 T16 in rally configuration (IDK if they are modified street legal versions or not) because I saw one in a video about the LA Petersen Automotive Museum. And its also quite possible that there also might be some 205 GTI Dimma (front engine 180hp 205 GTI with a 205 T16 style body kit from a Belgian car tuning company).

    I worked for an Importer in Northern California back in the 80’s and I had the opportunity to drive a R5 Turbo and it was the most fun car to drive. Raced and beat a 911 Turbo up Hwy 1 on Mt. Tamalpias in Marin County. May be that the 911 driver sucked but it felt good.

    • @patiencemetalfab

      Wow, what a cool opportunity to drive one of the all time classics, let alone race one alongside a 911. We're hoping we get some seat time in this one with the owner once it's finished up!
