Vallaki is maybe one of the best towns created for D&D. So many excellent NPCs, so many plots going on, so many adventure seeds. And I would emphasize the fact that this is a Town not a village like Barovia. When I first read this over I was like, how on earth I am going to run this?
My players just got here and i think ive freaked them out at least a bit about the happiness. Describing someone with there lip twitching in a forced smile, no one having a smile reach their eyes, and when granted entry being told "Keep your smile" by one of the guards. Im enjoying this vibe.
I would love living in a town where the government told you everything would be OK and then made it OK by having fun festivals all the time. The walls and guards and cultists seem to be doing a good job of keeping disease, war and a crazy vampire out. The Burgomaster is actually really effective government.
The way I did exposition and adventure hooks in Vallaki was by having two NPCs that would chat in the Inn, and the players could overhear them. It would be something like: "You alright? You look as grim as the grave." - "*Yawn* Had trouble sleeping. That blasted mad mage has been slinging lightning all night..."

Its a tough one for sure, but there is plenty to dive into. I cant wait to start diving into each and every location and person here!

Just don't break character or you get the stockade or worse!
