Lol love the sponsor break. First time I didn't skip a skillshare promo
I appreciate you saying that!
Peter... Griffin...
Hi Griffin, I've been watching your stuff since you first took over Indy Mogul. I wanted to say I'm very impressed with your work. It always blows my mind that you can keep up with trends in video while still keeping a style that is so distinctly yours. I'll look back on some of your older videos and your improvement is astonishing. You keep getting better and better. Love your work and aspire to be a full-time filmmaker myself someday, you have really inspired me to do the best with what I have. Hope I can see your stuff on the big screen someday!
Cheers,
Robert
Hey Griffin not sure if you read the comments but just wanted to say thanks for all you do man. I've followed you since the Indy Moguls days, and you are genuinely one of the main reasons I went into art and have garnered such of love of film making and documentaries. I've been wanting to write a comment like this for actual years, but better late then never. I hope all is well, and congrats with your newborn.
Ethan Lassey I do! And thank you so much for taking the time to share that feedback!
thanks for the tip griffin! i completely overlooked the ability to mask my mic out in post, great thing to keep in mind when shooting next.
Really, seriously, love and appreciate these videos.
Thank you so much!
Not gonna lie, this is a really helpful tip that I never thought of. Thank you!
I'm sure the rest of this video is filled with valuable information (as always), but I had to pause after the message from your sponsor. That was genius, Griffin! Shear genius. Ok, now back to the video.
That might be the best sponsor spot I've ever seen!
When I saw Griffin's video on masking out a mic from a year or so ago, I thought it was voodoo. It has literally changed the way I shoot now. Thanks for sharing all your skills and knowledge. (BTW: I took your doc course too!)
I'm so glad to hear you've found these videos useful!
If Peter wants to learn how to control his head, he probably should not be watching Jordy!
OMG at Peter's first search. HA,HA,HA,HA,HA,HA,HA!~
You are like Chuck Norris of the filmmaking world, I love your style!
The sponsor video was by far the best skillshare video I have seen! 😂😂😂
Hahaha! Best sponsor ad ever!
That's exactly the kind of sponsored message people would like to watch 😁
Er, I don't know if Mr. Skillshare will be happy about that. If you read the ToS at his website, there's this line: "You represent and warrant that you are at least 16 years of age. If you are under age 16, you may not, under any circumstances or for any reason, use the Service."
;-) oh boy is he funny.
Never thought about taking a plain background shot! Thank you!!
Often I forget to intentionally film a clean backplate, but it's usually not hard to find one at the start or end of the interview. But when I can remember, it's not a bad idea to ask your subject to step out of frame at the end, while you keep the camera rolling.
Griffin Hammond I plan on doing that moving forward. Doesn’t really hurt to have it on hand just in case. Ideally how long would you record a plain background? 1 minute?
Samuel Rivera Not even that long. I usually record for 10 seconds. If I need more, I loop it: play the backplate once forward, then once backward, then once forward, etc. That way it loops seamlessly, and I can still see the ISO noise movement that video has, but stills don't.
Griffin Hammond absolutely brilliant! Thanks so much Griffin, appreciate you taking out the time to answer my questions!
I want to hire Peter. Looks like a true go getter.
you're a super smart guy and I will definitely recommend this video to my friends at uni :D
Congratulations! You’re a dad!
Nice ad by Peter, he's a natural
Camera on a tripod, mic on a mic stand with a boom arm. Come in high, or come in low. Having zero budget for anything like that, my favourite, though, is Sony wireless mics. Robust cases and mics, solid wireless signal. Yes, full-size mics sound better, but background sound is better with a lav.
That was a great interview tip
The first time I didn't skip through a SkillShare ad :D
really valuable advice
haha great ad w/your son. great video, too, thanks for the tips. you're right, the azden does sound good, was surprised.
Peter is already getting a head start with his future skills lol 😂
The skillshare ad was hilarious! Hahaha
Ohh... Skillshare... Let´s try it! By the way, great info!
Bring another small lighweight lightstand fot the mic will help you a lot. Also you can concetrate to the interview itself and give a feedback for the talent with effective
Philo Nioman, You're totally right!
FYI, this video may get flagged as some countries have pretty strict laws about using babies in advertisement.
So you're saying to get an ampty background shot in case I want to fix the main shot??
Great quick lesson! Nice to see ya working with Panasonic as they move into FF Market. Honestly don't like the S1, the S1R,, size of the lenses or the outrageous pricing! Panasonic could have done better!!! For this kind of money I will move to Medium format sensor cameras which are much superior.
What a genius baby
What even is the problem with getting the mic in the shot of interviews? I can understand for an actual scene or anything, but for an interview? I'm sure people will say "It's distracting" but like it's already not that interesting to have to look at someone talking into or near a camera. tho, it is the little details that just adds to making yourself come off as higher production value
You're right-in narrative, filmmakers go to great lengths to suspend disbelief and hide the production process from the audience. But in documentary, the act of filmmaking is often acknowledged to the viewer, so seeing a mic doesn't change their understanding of the story. I just love that filmmaking gives me the power to hide my mistakes, so I'll usually take the opportunity to make myself appear more competent.
Congrats.... Peter is awesome !
Peter's head movement makes me wonder if he's drunk!
Oh man, it is the most hilarious add I’ve seen! 🤣
Vladimir's Vlog Thank you Vladimir!
Pedco Ultra Clamp at 1:15. It wouldn't be a Griffin project without one
Of course!
Wish u made this video a week earlier 😂 i screwed up audio with shotgun mic but luckily my faulty lav mic saved the day
The sponsor segment though
Hope you paid your model Peter good money, he's the star of this video.
Nice logo at the end.
huuuge congrats dude!!!
Great video!
I just experienced Déjà vu... It's almost as if I was in the audience yesterday when this was filmed...
Ha ha-thanks for coming!
Do you like the sound of the shotgun mic over lav?
I do. In a loud environment, I need a lav, which can get closer and isolate the voice better. But if it's moderately quiet, I prefer the frequency range of a good shotgun mic, and I like that it's not hanging off a shirt.
Why would you not use a wireless mic?
Let's Go Outdoors, I'll use a wireless lav in a loud environment, but otherwise I prefer the sound of a shotgun mic. It doesn't rub against clothes, better frequency range.
What did you use to film your self when you where holding the camera? Gh5 or S1 or something else?
Deadeye During the presentation, I'm holding the Lumix S1, and my GH5 is filming me with a 12mm prime.
@@GriffinHammond Just to clarify that when you where filming yourself on this mark 0:01 you where using S1?
Deadeye Sorry-the handheld shot at the start is also the GH5/12mm.
Hey Peter!
Ahhhh baby!!!
Cool video
Awesome
Peter is in the 99th percentile in computer usage.
And why not using a lavalier?
aixpress I don't always love the way a lav sounds. It might brush against clothing. I have to hide it. I prefer the frequency response of my shotgun mic. And not every interviewee-especially in fast news gathering-is willing to wear a lav.
Griffin Hammond Hmm, don't you think, it is more confusing for the person being interviewed, when you are doing aerobics in front of him with the shotgun...?? I have my experience after 40 years as tv correspondent. People forget the lav within minutes, and the interview situation is much more relaxed, because I can concentrate on the guest, like in a normal talk. And the sound is better in 90%. Maybe in the situation of a spontaneous street interview, we definitely need a shotgun in the hand of the interviewer. But then it makes sense, if you also see him in picture
aixpress You're right about the importance of a relaxed, comfortable interviewee. I find my interviews are often pretty short, and I manage to hold their eye contact well, so they forget the mic pretty fast. But yeah, for a longer interview, if my arms get tired, that could become distracting.
Hahaha babies are lovely but be careful with YT
Hahahaha @ that baby on the laptop.
Aww look at those cheeks your baby is so cute Peter!
Beautifull baby, his getting all you monetization! lol
so smart the mask to hide you in the shot, thanks
Get that baby editing and not goofing off on the internet!!! ;)
Don't we all agree Griffin is a "tiger dad"?
Already putting my son to work!

Bloody hell. So click baity! 😂
Hey Griffin, automatic thumbs down for clickbait title and loss of any chance that I'll watch your video.
