- The first egg started to pip this morning and we have some good views of the little chick's eye looking out the hole in the eggshell ♥♥ Dad swims up to the nest and Mom takes a break.
After working hard all day, the loon chick is seen sitting in half of the eggshell around just after 7PM EST! LPC blog has said that even if the chick is sitting in half an eggshell it is still considered a hatch in their book so welcome to the world little one!! We can see the chick at 6:32 timestamp. Mom has been stingy giving us views of her new hatchling so far. Thank you for watching!

A QUESTION:. Are LOON Chicks ... Aggressive to the siblings, like Eagle chicks are?? Or are they good with each other?? Thank you!!
Hi Bea yes the the first hatch can be aggressive to its sibling and sometimes they push off the nest. The chicks can pretty much swim after they hatch and can climb back up on the nest. The danger lies in the snapping turtles that will grab a chick if they see it in the water - so it is safest on the nest or riding on Mom's back.

If any of yall want a spectacular vacation with the small town feel...please visit my home and you'll be able to experience these guys first hand. I recommend a rental in honor or beulah MI. And kayak or float the Manistee river. There is lots of fun activities to do, lots of lakes etc.. ..plenty of affordable rentals in the area and the sights are hard to beat. If u kayak or canoe Manistee river you eill go right to "loon lake" you'll also see a ton of other birds and wildlife.. i also recommend going during a new moon and floating at night. Its a must experience. Drive M22 and float the rivers and swim the local lakes (not lake Michigan lol) theres also casinos, an amusement park not far (little river casino and Michigan Adventure park)

Hi Rose the parents will catch small fish for their chicks to eat. They will continue to provide for them for several weeks until they are able to fish on their own.

I am thrilled to see just this, but thankful for Smithsonian 'zine's article on the coot/ loon (don't know if I am correct,) but the babies have red heads. so cute.
Congrats to this amazing family! 🎊🎉❤💙. We got a nice clip of the hole in the egg so early in the morning and then a shot of the cute little one later in the afternoon. The sun we see on the Mom was incredible. Loons are a remarkable species to me, truly beautiful. I love that you included some footage of the nest site from afar LH with one of the Loons floating next to the nest. This is very cool how they constructed the canopy which protects the Loons and chicks from several things. Thanks LH! SEDs💜🌚🌙
Thank you Tom! I was wondering if you had loons around your area? They are haunting beautiful and are a remarkable species! Our loon family is now off the nest and have left the area to their new brooding spot where the parents will fish and feed their chicks until fledging! Too bad we don't get to see that part!!

LOL Yes I have been watching non stop now since Friday! We only have a short amount of time to watch them before they take off so I did not want to miss a moment of it!!
I've never seen loons in real, but have heard them when camping in n mich. love their calls.their camo seem a little strange to me but it's beautiful.thanks
