    I think since the numbers are so out of whack. The rebuilding of the raid with the Asus card and rerunning the test is the only way to verify the results.
    Also thank you for being so detailed with your videos. It helps a bunch.

    That result surprised me too! I like that you go into all the details about whatever you're working on. When I first got the Asus Hyper M.2 x16 card at the end of 2020, I searched over and over for videos about these 4 x 4 Gen 4 cards because the manual that comes with the Asus is pathetic for any useful information about using it...And then...I found Build or Buy...answered every question I had. Keep up the good work, thanks again!

    Hey! I've learned quite a few things since we last spoke.
    1) My board does have RAID in BIOS, it only shows up once CSM is disabled.
    2) The AMD RAID driver is defective in some manner, I get 60% lower IOPs and 15% lower sequential, particularly on the writes, compared to Dynamic Disks stripe. I even zero'd my drive in the hopes it was TRIM related, but no change in performance was observed
    3) Dynamic disks (striping done through Computer Management) is the fastest option (1,000,000 IOPs with 17GB/s writes)
    4) Dynamic disks should NOT be used however, because it doesn't support TRIM
    5) The alternative, Windows Storage Spaces, gave me similar performance to the BIOS RAID, and TRIM is supported...but it's no where near where I was with dynamic disks...
    6) Individual VOLUMES or RAIDABLE drives in BIOS RAID, when put into the same dynamic disk configuration as I had before, still fail and only give the 60% performance
    Going to disable NVMe RAID and reinstall my OS until I figure out what's going wrong, or until I buy that on device RAID card from Highpoint we spoke about.

    • @hacked2123
      @hacked2123 3 года назад +2

      Confirmed: after OS re-install with BIOS RAID removed, I am now hitting my 1,000,000 IOPs instead of 400,000 that I saw in BIOS RAID0 and and BIOS VOLUME/RAIDABLE configutations that are identical to this.

Get whichever one is available at the best Price. My personal preference is the Gigabyte Aorus. Originally, in the press release that x16 M.2 NVMe PCIe Adapter was included. However, upon release, that Item mentioned was scrubbed from the press release. Interesting!

      Hi Сергей Иванцов,
      Thank You! Appreciate Your Comments and Support! Highpoint fills a void where no one else has gone. They bridge a gap in the technology from Motherboard to Bifurcation support. We need to do a Video about RAID types and RAID levels first. Then indicate where each of these different types of AICs fit into than technology map. Great idea!
      If We do a Video on the Highpoint AICs, it would be the HighPoint Technologies SSD7540 PCIe 4.0 x16 8-Port M.2 NVMe RAID Controller - amzn.to/3tTUC3o
      Add to that 8 - Sabrent 8TB PCIe 4.0, M.2 NVMe Drives!

      Wow! Can You imagine! A Beast! Better to wait though until 2nd Generation PCIe 4.0 Drives are available! Right now, the Capacity is 8TBs but the Speed per Drive of that capacity is 3,300MBps. Better to have 5,000MBps or 7,000MBps! We will keep that in mind! Hard to justify unless or until a Client comes forth to provide the means. Otherwise We could discuss the technology. Just not the same, as hands on, testing. It could happen! We still have a follow-up to do on this Video! Stay tuned!

    With all deep respect I am concerned about this test. The preconditions for these two tests are not the same. Nothing I have seen on RUclips points to a similar conclusion of a significant decrease of reading speed for the Asus card. Please build your Raid for the Asus the same way as for the Gigabyte. I think you will see close to similar results for these two cards.

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  3 года назад +1

      Hi Mikel Carr,
      Welcome! You are the 2nd to ask in 6 months. Closest AIC to the Liqid Honey Badger would be Highpoint. Both are Bifurcated since they both can accept 8 M.2 NVMe Drives and both require a x16 Lane Slot electrically. However, the Liqid Honey Badger, if We have to ask the price... At over twice what the Highpoint costs, a premium for that performance. Whereas, the Highpoint AIC is $1,000 but non Bootable. Have no idea if the Liqid Honey Badger is Bootable. Which is really a bummer. Can You imagine using a Liqid Honey Badger on a WRX80 Workstation? Wow! The Liqid Honey Badger will of course be faster than the Highpoint but at more than twice the price. Options! But, with PCIe 5.0 due out soon, this all changes again. Good question! If You Buy that Server Component for a Workstation, keep Us posted on Your progress! Don't expect We'll ever see that on Amazon. Never say never! Time will tell!
      We'd love to test one but that's not going to happen either. We'd love to do an emissivity reading while running a Test since they use stacked Drives. Would make for an interesting Video! Liqid should do more to promote more. Like making the Specs openly available. We have had several Data Scientists ask about this type of product when discussing Mellanox adapters for AI which We find most interesting. We thought this was an esoteric subject when We did the first Video on M.2 NVMe x16 Quad cards. Mainstream for those who want this technology!

      Hi@@ga-ns8ls,
      You too? Odd. I know why We had that problem, drive sequencing as identified by Max. You installed new Drives. No monkeying around. No changing Add in Cards. The Gigabyte Aorus M.2 x16 Drive Sequencing is Sequential. Whereas on the ASUS Hyper M.2 x16, the order is 1, 3, 4, 2. And that affects the RAID Array arrangement. That's why We lost performance. We lost a Drive from lost clusters. Of Our options, the end result would be the same. Destroy or Delete the RAID array and recreate. Then install Windows Bootable RAID again. Practice makes perfect!
      And now You have low performance too!?! Working on a Video for what We've been doing for Slow Performance on the ASUS Hyper M.2 X16 AIC as described above. Spent 2 days testing. 5 hours Filming. Delete the RAID, Tested Drives individually. Even installed a single different Drive to better understand Drive Sequencing. Then Windows RAID. Tested that. @@BuildOrBuy Ok great I'm looking forward to it! Seriously detailed and awesome hardware content, thanks for your knowledge and such focused videos its really helpful to a lot of users!
      My failed (haha) setup was: Enabled RAID modes, made sure to enable 4x4x4x4, preloaded raid drivers before installing windows, but installed Windows on a seperate single M.2 (only 3rd gen) in a slot integrated on my motherboard (this drive is not in the 4-way Gen4 raid). I created the Asus Gen 4 drives volume with the RaidXpert software the manual references, also tried using the Raidexpert utility via the bios but have the same ~10.5 GB/s speeds.

      Well, I've been entirely mobile for a year now. First with my old surface pro 4 and now with the dell xps 9500 and I think I prefer it, even though I've certainly given up a lot of power my custom pc had (I used to use it as a daw, for game development and gaming).
      So I've become intrigued by what possibilities are out there for mobile computing power and ive even been considering making myself somewhat of a hybrid, something small but powerful.
      So id be interested in stuff along those lines 😁

      Hi@@alanaATX,
      Even though there are tradeoffs for mobility, performance and power, considering the aspects of the GPU shortage, a Laptop may be the only alternative for the next 2 years based on Intel's own statements about chip shortages.
      As a Content Creator using a DAW, I'd start with an NVIDIA RTX Studio based Laptop armed with the Adobe After Effects (MFR) Multi Frame Render CPU Optimization Formula. That alone would make an interesting Video for discussion.
      BTW: What DAW software are You using? This helps Us to make better Videos! Appreciate Your Support!

    is there any speed diffrence between 2 ssds and 4 ssds on those cards??? like if i put 4 ssds it will perform faster on raid 0 ???? or speed will be same between 2 and 4

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  3 года назад +2

      Hi OKTAY, Welcome! There appears to be a load balancing issue when using less than 4 drives. Performance is better with 4 Drives. However, in RAID 0 the Tests indicate with 4 Drives, You attain the Speed of 3 Drives due to overhead for RAID configuration.
      PCIe 5.0 per NVMe will be up to 15,000MBps. Which means, new Chipsets, new Motherboards and everything else.
      BTW: Windows 11 is due out June 24, 2021 at 11:00 AM ET. Why is that important? Be careful purchasing any computer Items that require a Driver. We think this is why the older NVIDIA Video cards will no longer be supported. Stay tuned!

      Absolutely! HEDT is what You have. Quad cards are Designed for HEDT like X299, X399 and TRX40. Pay attention to Slot assignments for PCIe Lane Bifurcation. Which Motherboard? New HEDT Motherboards are on the Horizon since AMD announced the new CPUs! And that's huge! We've been waiting nearly 3 years for that to happen!

    You didn't rebuild RAID. It is obvious that affected the results by lowering them by two digit value expressed in percentage. Looks like ASUS is worse than it is.

      Hi@@margovincent22x, Right now, doing Your Research to explore Your options is a good thing! 1st, is RAID a need or a want? Suggest, Keep it Simple. And inexpensive. So You can experience the technology. And experiment.
      2nd, There are 3 types of RAID.
      1. Hardware RAID
      2. Hybrid Bios RAID
      3. O/S software RAID
      2 and 3 can be achieved with a Quad card. 1 requires a Broadcom MegaRAID.
      Then You have the M.2 NVMe Drives. Same Drives work on all of them!
      Hope that helps!

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  3 года назад +2

      Hi jeff dughman,
      Welcome! Yes, absolutely! A Quad AIC requires 1 x16 Slot, electrically. And that Slot must be Bifurcated in the Bios from x16 to x4x4x4x4. As long as You Motherboard has 2 x16 Slots, all is good! One for the Quad AIC and One for the RTX 3080 Ti. Are You using the X570 chipset? That's going to be a problem for having enough PCIe Resources. What's Your Motherboard? If You only have 1 x8 PCIe Slot, then a self Bifurcated AIC would be in order. Those cost as much as a Motherboard due to the PLX Chip for Lane Switching. Hope that helps! Thanks for Asking!

      Ji@@jeffdughman9741,
      Absolutely! Not enough PCIe Resources.
      ‧ 2 x PCIe 4.0 x16 Safeslots (x16, x8/x8).
      You would only see 2 M.2 NVMe Drives. And Your GPU would be using a x8 Slot. Not ideal. Very few x570 Motherboards have even 1 dedicated x16 Slot, electrically. Let alone two. This type of AIC is made for a HEDT. Like a TRX40 or WRX80. You could use a Dual M.2 NVMe Adapter like the one from Supermicro. Hope that helps!
