    I just went to this gym and talked with an employee about this video! He said that they are now the TOP RATED gym with many many reviews on Google, but there has been no increase in visitors lol. They also showed me the paper Magnus signed. It was taped to the wall in a plastic paper protector. It was such a pleasant visit and the people are all so friendly there!

    When Magnus said "I feel like when climbers watch you it's encouraging, because they don't want you to fail they want you to succeed" I just remembered climbing years ago with supportive wonderful friends and strangers. It's true. Climbing is collaborative and supportive, it's why it's such a great sport.

    • @lupo3694
      @lupo3694 2 года назад +20

      That is so true. It was one of the things I really liked, when I first started climbing. I was way into BMX (very similar to the Skate scene) back then, and I instantly felt at home, because it is very similar in that regard. People are stoked if you do something that is hard, for you. Doesn't matter whether it is easy or hard for them. You are pushing each other, because the only true fight is with yourself and the wall/trick.

      Exactly, this place was probably rated low because it's a gym for "real" climbers, not just for the casual climbers that go climbing for a workout instead of going to a regular gym. Nothing wrong with that of course, but there is a real difference in who they are trying to attract.

      I havent seen the video from when started it, but from what I gather, The reason behind the game is to forego "Ego". By eliminating the word "mine" especially in a group/work setting, it shows less possessiveness and egocentric tendencies. So, I dont believe that is "stupid". I believe a true man is someone who is comfortable in removing his ego in situations especially group projects where you may want to monopolize the idea/project etc and allow everyone to have input.

    Magnus, you could do a whole series visiting random gyms throughout the world and it wouldn't get boring.
    The gym I go to is sort of loved/hated because despite being the cheapest gym, it's kinda old and their V0s are V1s-V3s in other gyms, so usually beginners get discouraged. Also the level of the climbers is pretty decent and they won't spray beta, so it feels really awkward the first couple of times.
    I didn't know about this and I just thought "I'm a beginner, falling is just a part of the process" so I just kept going. After a couple of sessions I remember when I nailed my first boulder the locals whom I hadn't spoken to actually cheered and fist bumped me. They had been watching and I became kinda like "the newbie". After that, the vibe was pretty much like the one in this vid regardless of my level, lots of friendliness and support. It's a friendly community, all I had to do was showing commitment.

    This summarizes my experience with climbing in Tokyo, just love so much more small local gyms! They are the place to make friends and enjoy climbing with others. Bigger gyms like B-pump or T-wall are cool and well equipped, but people are rarely that friendly. Also, I find that even if they don't have a hard enough grade for you officially, they often have some made-up problems that people are working on that are above the maximum grade of the gym. People expect a lot more from a gym here, more like a "club" in terms of price & expectation. This is clearly a climber's gym, so maybe a bit intimidating for a novice. Also for rating, it's less inflated, so 3 is as expected/average, 4 is really good, and 5 usually means not many ratings.

  • @Dr.Giangy
    @Dr.Giangy 5 лет назад +638

    the gym looked really good but i can understand why the rating was only 2.8 stars: usually gyms like these cater to a very specific niche of people and can be intimidating to people who are unfamiliar to a certain sport. Many will try a more beginner friendly gym or "commercial" gym and hold that as a standard, while in reality in gyms like these there are greater possibilities for emerging athletes and people who really want to get into the sport.

      Yeah, as an olympic weightlifter a 5 star gym to me would look like a dump with barely any equipment to someone who's used to flashy commercial gyms. • @lenisemicolon
      @lenisemicolon 5 лет назад +10

      It would probably make sense for the gym to advertise itself as being for the niche audience it actually caters to to avoid the low ratings from casual climbers. • @iBcPirate
      @iBcPirate 5 лет назад +5

      Agreed. I started climbing in a commercial gym a couple years back near my college. A few months after I started I went back home and tried out a local gym there which was pretty similar to this video's gym: non-commercial with polished holds, and sandbagged ratings. Didn't really like it. Now I'm a much more experienced and stronger climber and feel that my commercial gym I still go to is lacking in the higher grades at times and I'm always itching to go back to my gym near home. It really depends on where you are in your climbing experience.
