- Incredible work everyone! This was a difficult challenge but the DPS community really delivered. Super fun, nuanced and engaging characters from all kinds of different worlds. Congratulations to all who participated and I hope these squads make your portfolios shine.
The voters have spoken and we have a winner! Check out the video to see which one of these worthy finalists took home the win (spoilers below).
My sincere thanks to everyone who participated - it's a truly inspiring body of work that you should all be really proud of. I say with all possible humility - we have the coolest community of artists on Earth :)

And now for our winner Jazz Cybernetics by Mioch! Congratulations. Here is a description of the work and process directly from the artist:

"First of all I wanted to thank everyone who voted on my work, I dearly appreciate it.
I had incredible fun working on this project and bringing the characters to life. I've always loved the era of the 1920's but I wanted to give it a twist with some futuristic-cyber elements, pulling inspiration from Legend of Korra and Overwatch.
My main objective was to create a diverse cast of jazz musicians with vastly different backgrounds and motivations why they started playing music in the first place.
I really wanted to create these characters with the idea that they would fit into an animation series/movie hence why I chose to go very expressive with the characters' shapes.
During the concepting process I started off defining my characters and researching about the era to have a good idea what I'm working with, this helped a lot in the long run. After I went straight into thumbnailing a lot of concepts/ideas and ended up with these characters.
I really wanted to include an artificial intelligence robot that plays the cello in order to feel closer to humans and to sparkle emotions that come with playing music.
Hence the decision to weave elegant and emotional details into its design with rounded edges and elongated shapes. This was certainly out of my comfort zone but I had a lot of fun bringing this character to life.
The second character portrays a grandma along with her cat that plays the harp to reminisce the times she played music with her husband who now has since passed. She is a bit of an amusing character that loves to feed everyone and pull pranks here and there, so I wanted | to transform that into her design by making her outfit look cozy and easy-going with lots of round shapes and warm colors.
The third in line was one that came into my mind first when thinking of the Roaring Twenties, I wanted to go for an idea with typical jazz essence. This character comes from a rich background with a bit of a vain attitude and does music simply for the goal of fame. To translate this into her design I went with expressive and dramatic shapes and quite extravagant clothing with colors that depict a chic demeanor. The big hat is also a major statement piece that solidified her design in the thumbnail stage, so it was an easy decision to go with this look.
As for the final character he is the one that is really serious about music as an art form and wants to play the saxophone for a living. He is also one of the characters where I decided to really incorporate the futuristic theme by giving him a cyber arm. Keeping this in mind I went for a rather sturdy and steadfast posture together with a rugged outfit. I kept the colors quite muted and neutral to solidify his stern personality."

Though it's not an issue to use actors for your inspiration like the woman on the right, using designs like 'The Doom Guy' for the character in the back or Rocket Racoon as your base might give you trouble if you're placing this in your portfolio. The designs looked very familiar to me, so I checked and I could see the same poses and elements used, which any potential employer will too.

This challenge really upped my game for character design. Learned a lot and gave me more confidence in bringing art piece to life. I'm also glad to be one of the runner-ups despite it being the first art challenge I have ever done. such a supportive community. Congratulations to Mioch, Such a cool piece :) I'm looking forward to joining the next challenge and hoping I'd be available by then. You're an awesome person/mentor, Hardy. Keep inspiring.
