they def understand better than they can speak, when learning a language for some reason it always seem easier to read/understand than to actually speak it i'm not sure why that is. I lived in Italy for 5mths and by the end i could understand and even read some but for some reason trying to put sentences together was a real pain, its so frustrating, when someone would speak to me i would understand about 70% of what they was saying but i would get so frustrated trying to reply in italian half of it would come out in eng sometimes i would even spit out random spanish words....idk why...lol so i feel their pain
it's just more easier to engage in a language that way if it makes sense? it's a lot more 'passive' in a sense i guess like for example w english you can hear it on tv and read it on the internet but it's always a more engaging experience when it comes to speaking especially if u're not in an environment where u're constantly surrounded by ppl who speak it. also u get a lot of assholes who make a big deal bc ppl have different accents and don't always get the grammar right which puts ppl off especially since speaking that language puts u more into the 'limelight' than when u just read it or listen to it.
