SUGGESTION: Linus, I think it would be good if LTT did a few videos about setting up parental controls on children accounts. I'm a parent of a now adult child. I had "FUN" (note: Sarcasm) setting up xbox, steam, windows, etc. so my daughter could use computers and consoles in a safe-ish environment. I'm a 30 year IT veteran, and I've had trouble figuring out some of this. (and then there are the tools that straight up didn't work.) My daughter was growing up during the period where game manufacturers were getting questions about "why does my child have access to x?" and "How could my child run up a bill on this game?" Their response was, "We built in parental controls." Those controls SSSUUUCCCCKKKEEEDDD!!! If I, someone who works in IT had issues finding and using them, Abandon All Hope for the average parent.

It's a last gen cooler that's $800 bc that's when they started development. Not long after, 4090 cooler came out. It's a new company and they're prototyping. Again, looking at this from a business standpoint rather than a techie. You have lost your roots.

In addition, with a starting prototype like that Billet could finds ways to make that design cheaper and modify only certain sections to become compatible with a wide range of products. Then it wouldn’t be that $800 halo product anymore, though it could offer such a variant, but now can offer a better solution vs competition. That’s how r&d and product development works.

Linus complains about not wanting to spend another $500 of an engineers time to test it again. But Linus, you made a mistake, you're a reviewer, it's your job to fix the mistake you made even if you costs you money. That's how you make it right. Even if you came to the same conclusion of not recommending the product, the product should still be reviewed properly. Honestly this whole thing makes me really skeptical of the Labs thing.

But if the whole thing is compromised by chasing the algorithm and mass producing videos to meet a quota. Then the entire thing is pointless and a waste of money, specially if they don’t own to their mistakes and lose people’s trust as it’s happening right now.

LTT is what 100+ mil $, and you left 100-500$ take you down from what s morally right as a product reviewer?
Analogy: Imagine trying to fit a different size wheel on your car and then saying is wobbly or tilted and not performing right, must be a really BAD wheel /BAD product then. That s what you did in this case, and for a company that is trying to get out there and trusted you to have a complete and real review you have failed them, and more so you failed us the viewers. And i dont even want to get into you trying to sell/auction this "bad" product, without their consent.
Realistic speaking now. What s your job and goal there? To give ppl accurate non biased reviews or to pump as many videos as you can without testing properly?
Clearly are some issues inside LTT LMG, maybe ppl are overworked or fatigued or stressed from just jumping from 1 project/video to another without really caring. Either way, i hope you have the will and power to take a step back and reassess.

About YT premium. Pretty sure if they turned down the price a bit, or added a lower tier, that just disables ads but also has no music, it would find more customers. RN, they market it as "you buy this because it's the right thing to do" and honestly, the Idea of google is that they sell our data, completely kill the concept of privacy online, and in return, give us access to the web. The major difference between Costco preventing cards from being shared and Netflix preventing accounts being shared is that Costco never encouraged people to share the membership cards, Netflix absolutely encouraged people sharing their account passwords. Moreover, the checkout operator looking at the card to see if it matches the person who handed it to them, that doesn't add any inconvenience to the end user. Whereas Netflix users could be required to follow some sort of process to verify themselves as the account holder every single time their IP address changes.

Honestly, Spotify Premium is the one subscription I've never questioned (I'm on a family plan that's less than $5/person/month). I use it multiple hours every day, and their song radios and "your mix" algorithms are unbelievably on point. I don't create my own playlists anymore, because I really don't need to. I'm usually able to select one song I'm kind of vibing with at that specific moment and then listen to the song radio for three to four hours without feeling like I want to skip a song or two. It'll play me a great mix of songs I know and love and new songs to discover. It's such a low-friction experience that I've never thought twice about that subscription.

In regards to the RUclips Premium vs Spotify thing: I have Spotify instead of RUclips Premium primarily because of all the 3rd party websites and apps that integrate with it. Like I spend a lot of my spotify time on a website where it's a room full of people and it rotates through different DJs, like a sorta virtual "pass the aux cable" thing. The song radio and discovery algorithm on spotify is also better than youtube, spotify makes a TON of daily playlists and you have loads of ways to control/ad to/remove from them. If you're just casually "oh I want to listen to this song" using a music service I'm sure they're basically identical but once you start trying to get more into it Spotify is just better.
I also hardly ever watch RUclips on my phone so literally the only benefit I'm getting out of RUclips Premium is no advertisements, and I'm losing out on all this cool 3rd party stuff.3
And before someone says it, no I don't use an adblocker, I have no problem watching 5-15s of advertisements before a video. Someone has to pay for the servers and they sure aren't going to do it for free.
Granted if I was making like $100,000+ a year I'd pay for RUclips Premium, because fuck it why not at that point.

google doing nothing about it? ... Do you even think about what you write? Try reading it and realize just how dumb you sound...
That is how they make money - on adds... it has always been... since day one, google made money on adds. They have done something about it! They have tested how many adds people are willing to endure, and they keep pushing it - boiling the frog so to speak.
And if you don't want to pay with your time, you can pay with youtube premium instead, not only will that get rid of adds, it also gives you a few other perks. But more importantly, if you care, the creator gets a lot more money from your view than when it is add based.
There wouldn't be a Linus, or any of the other youtubers you watch, if not for adds, that is what pays their rent, even if LTT at this point has enough other ways of making money to make it without youtubes money!
I am not saying you should buy premium, there can be reasons you don't think you have the money, but you should wake up and understand how the world works! Nothing is free, and if it free, you are the product - in this case, your eyeballs and your time. And if you don't have the money for premium, they still allow you to watch for free - if you watch the fucking adds. and many of them are still skipable - they didn't have to do that - remember that...
I can however hint to maybe looking into using a VPN and signing up from another country if you think it is too expensive where you live, the prices are not the same worldwide.

Linus (and youtube) is missing the forest for the trees on the adblock issue. Video "The Cobra Effect: Why Anti-Adblock Policies Could Hurt Revenue Instead" is pretty much a must see as far as the whole ad situation goes, because there's a LOT more to the issue than "I don't want to pay/if you aren't paying we don't need you".
But to briefly summarize key points: users can be valuable even when they don't view ads, forcing adblock users to view ads can lower clickthrough rates and ultimately hurt ad revenue, pissing users off is never a good idea, especially the more technical ones, and finally, there are reasons beyond simple freeloading why users turn to adblockers, generally relating to bad or excessive ads. The main solution proposed is to get better ads that people will want to watch or at least be willing to watch. Suggesting that the investment in better ads will feedback on itself to solve the problem instead of wasting money on a non-solution trying to force users to view ads they don't want.
Honestly Linus of all people should understand how there are both good and bad ads, and good and bad ways of pushing them. After all most LTT videos are themselves ads, or still functionally so in the case of many non-sponsered products, and they even contain ads within the ads for LTT products and other sponsers. And people actually willingly watch them, even people who use adblock. Not everybody watches everything of course, but some people choose to consume these ads because they are good ads for them. And the CTR for LTTstore ads is probably through the roof compared to any forced youtube ad.

There should have never been a "free" internet service, that is all the discussion on this topic that is necessary. Access to content should have been paid and ad and tracking free or paid for with ads and data tacking.
Ads as something more than simple video or graphics file are a security concern and should be either heavily regulated or banned all together, and of course, there is another security concern about scammers. So no, I don't allow ads on my machine.

I just about fell over when y'all didn't know what Microsoft Bob was. It wasn't a full OS. It was an app that came with Windows 95. The description Dan gave was somewhat accurate: it was a "virtual house" where you could move around point and click style (think original Myst) and do activities. There wasn't much actual productivity though... It was more like a very early Sims concept where you could play with a virtual house.

Galaxius made a good video about internet adds (The Cobra Effect: Why Anti-Adblock Policies Could Hurt Revenue Instead). The big question is: What has changed ? Nothing. Companies are just more & more greedy and they just want all the cash in the world. For me the solution is quite simple. Firefox, different add-ons and if stuff like AdNauseam wont work - then I just um.... I would not watch RUclips. Just like voting with my wallet - I am gonna vote with my time.
It is kinda like f2p live service video game. What would happen if all of the sudden you change it to b2p or add adds ? You would lose a lot of playerbase and the paying players would not have anyone to fight against and in the end the game would start to die Ecosystem simply collapses.
In RL, the amount of space for adds is regulated by law & governments. On the internet ? Not so much. There is your problem right there. Add blockers would not be needed if the amount of adds was balanced.

Linus’s phone upgrading frustrations are something that iOS perfected literally over 15 years ago. I’ve essentially been using the “same iphone” since the original launched in 2007, just the soul happens to get transplanted into a new vessel every year. Locally stored backups and restores to a new device are practically effortless and eeeevvverything transfers over just like that as if I was already using the new iPhone the entire time. This is such a major plus of the iOS ecosystem.
Only downside is it’s soooo slow over Lightning’s USB 2.0 transfer speeds. But at least it looks like that’ll finally be changing this year too.

And then when he's proven wrong he just doubles down instead of taking things on the chin. Best thing was for him to step down and let people who know how to run a succeful company of the size it has grown to run it properly. It was disgusting the way he "assumed" what and how Billet Labs intended to market this product. And if I want to be "entertained" LTT is the last place I'd go. I think the youtube ad/free thing is a lot more complex of an issue than people realise or talk about a lot. I will still be massively oversimplifying but basically there is this gigantic international public desire to use the internet to share and upload video based content in a way that is open and free for everyone, this seems to be a *human* desire to leverage the technology this way. There is also resulting pressure for this to be a single unified platform- we don't actually *want* to go to multiple places to go looking for stuff, we want it all in one single place because that's most convenient. We absolutely *do* want people to make a living off this type of content, but I strongly believe the fundamental desire is a lot more wholesome than most people maybe realise- I genuinely just think people want to be able to connect with one another online and video is one of the main mediums to do so. Obviously however that's not free, but I do think at a certain point our desires, as a species, are somewhat incompatible with the notion of having all of our services and interactions be profitable. How to solve that issue in the real world I have no idea, but I really do think that an open and free video platform is something the human race as a whole genuinely has a strong desire for and it's something we should be looking to maintain, I think the troubles with adblock are representative of the notion that we do not want everything in our lives to be monetised, that we just want some things to be available to everyone
