VERBIER FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA Daniele Gatti conductor Lise Davidsen soprano Yulia Matochkina mezzo-soprano Freddie De Tommaso tenor Bryn Terfel bass-baritone CORO DELL'ACCADEMIA NAZIONALE DI SANTA CECILIA Grabado el lunes 17 de julio de 2023
This is an eye opener. Davidsen almost shouted the Kyrie. Terfel pushes his higher notes and his facial histrionics are just awful. He can't decide where exactly to place the notes. "Should I cover this note or not? How about I do both during one held note?" De Tommaso was very good as was Ms. Matochkina. The Libera Me was strained on Davidsen's part; who BTW has little chest voice considering her dramatic roles. She has not learned that one does not need to almost stretch the mouth to its limits when one sings. The sound goes sideways. And the tension in her throat is taking its toll on her. Notice her tongue, it matches her vibrato. Way too much tension. It's a big voice and she does not need to push. She can still sing a great pianissimo though. Gatti doesn't seem to communicate well with this orchestra and the soloists. Often, they are not in synch. I absolutely hate when musicians close their eyes and focus inwardly. It cuts off the other musicians in a conductor's case and the audience when soloists do it. To me, the Requiem is Verdi's greatest opera. BUT, it is still a religious work and reverence to the text and the music is paramount. IMHO.
I find the final interview didn’t bring anything interesting to this otherwise valuable video.and to call one of the soloists “the star of the night” in the presence of the other three is rude and tactless.
