"Anesthetize" from Porcupine Tree's "Fear of a Blank Planet" album (2007).
There we go. Yet another massively requested song covered. Yeah this song is very long, but it has so many breaks and pauses that it's far from draining. It's actually quite easy in terms of technique. The thousands of variations are why this song is not so easy.
Some important information that nobody is going to read.
Tuning : C-G-C-F
Artist : Porcupine Tree
Bassist : Colin Edwin
Album : Fear of a Blank Planet (2007)
Song : ANESTHETIZE
Bass : Warwick GPS Corvette 5A Ash
An A Perfect Circle vest, an Opeth T-shirt, a Porcupine Tree cover : the perfect channel!
Nice work by the way :)
Thank you very much!
Such a classic! Very well done, bud! 🤘
Oh shit, it's the guitar man!
@@depressedfrogpenis 🎸
Thanks man! A classic indeed..
That whole riff at 9:33 is a gangster riff... so creative,,, love shit like that... great job per usual bro 🤘
Thanks as always! That riff is the biggest mindfuck at first
One of the best songs ever written!
Thanks Leo, you are a hero! I’ll not only take this as material to learn some of the parts in the song and as inspiration for own bass parts, but simply listen to this in the background because the quasi-bass boosted version is awesome 🤘
Sounds great! Glad you like it
Phenomenal playing man. Colin is such an underrated player, always loved his tone.
Thanks man! And indeed, he's very underrated..
00:00 Hey that's me! THANK U!
"Waiting phase one" for the next one? hehe...
I second this, I'd love to see waiting phase one. These videos are fantastic.
Wow, I wasn't expecting for this
We've been waiting for soooo long...
Anesthetize is my favourite song of all time, and this is the best bass cover of it
Thank you very much :)
Outstanding choice of shirts, Sir!
Thank you so much for covering this song. It's done with absolute perfection.

A really intriguing song for its composition for sure! Cheers man!

Thank you so much for doing this. I was looking for a cover with tabs really long and I was really excited when I read that you were gonna cover this and wasn’t expecting it to be uploaded this soon. I also want to say that you have really helped me become a better bassist and learn new songs. Also sorry for bad English if I made some mistakes
Glad I could help you out! Your English is fine :)
Wow, amazing! Thanks for doing this cover, your bass videos help me a lot!

Thanks as always!
OH man, i love this band, and this song is one of their best in my book. You play very well. I'm a new bass learner, and one day i hope to play like this to. Thank you for the cover, and the tabs.👌
No problem! you'll get there in no time :)
There are some of my favourite basslines
Daaristiedan! Heerlijk sferisch nummer, man man man, wat lekker!
Zal even duren voordat alles in je hoofd is opgeslagen tho
@@LeoBassCovers2 Dat denk ik ook...elke net weer iets anders, maakt het er niet makkelijker op...maar dat gaat lukken! Bedankt man
Epic song and nice cover!! 🤟🏻
Thanks mate!
Excellent playing and production, dude!
Thanks a lot!
Hell yeah my dude! Finally :D Very, VERY well done!

Amazing. Great job as usual leo. Going out on a limb here, I know you have a lot of requests but it'd be awesome to see "back to the river" by we hunt buffalo. No biggie if you cant, Thanks again for your service! Your channel has made me improve ten fold.
Hell yes
Nice cover
Thanks!
Love it
Glad to hear!
FINALLY
I love the part that goes:
} } } } | } } } } | } } } }
it's best part really
How long did that take to learn? It took me about six months to get the drums down. Killer song. Killer album, really. I got to see PT in Chicago on the Fear of a Blank Planet Tour, and they were sooooo good! As an aside, the audience was really cool too. Everyone picked their spot, and just stayed there. I don't think I got knocked into once. 🤘
That's basically every Dutch crowd ever during a prog show haha! But it didn't take that long to learn really. Probably just an hour or two because yes, it's long, but there's lots of pauses and repetitive riffs :)
@@LeoBassCovers2 For me, the challenge was the drum tornado that Gavin unleashes before the last big chorus in part 2. The first time I heard that, I was like, "uh....what?" 🤣
That guy is amazing.
Wow very cool, thanks for covering this, it's my fav from them I think. As a side note, can I ask how you manage to isolate the bass track enough so that you can hear all those parts ? I've tried with some blackgaze songs (mainly alcest) but found the bass to be very intertwined with the guitar, and couldn't catch any subtleties of what the bassis plays. I'm very interested in the process because I want to start transcribing by ear (not to do videos but solely for training purposes). Thanks a lot if you or anybody have a good technique to share with me other than a low pass filter !
Thanks! I have made a mini-serie about the entire process from transcribing to editing called "Behind The Cover" which is on this channel. All the answers are in there basically. But I mainly just use an equalizer to get the notes right. You'll improve overtime though. It's a very slow process and your first 50 transcriptions won't be that good. But eventually, you don't need any software to transcribe.
@@LeoBassCovers2 Oh I missed that ! Thanks for answering again when I could've searched better haha. Your channel is the right stuff for prog / post lovers, I'll definitely consider joining your Patreon. Have a good day !
I mean, you couldn't have known that I had such a video on the chanenl :)
No problem!
Steven would kill me if he heard me adding extra notes to his songs to make them more funky.
I'm pretty sure that he won't be able to kill a real witch
I just wanted to say again that this cover is awesome, thank you so much for making it, it's very helpful! I'm amazed at how well you handled the super fast part with 16th notes (the one at 10:05), this is crazy fast for me! It turned out to be the only part of the song that I cannot play full tempo yet. Any tips on mastering it? I tried it slowly to the metronome and slowly increased the tempo but at some point I just can't push it further. I'm a beginner though, I only started playing bass about 1.5 years ago, so maybe it's just too hard for my level yet.
Hmm.. that was the only part I had a lot of trouble with during the recording. I feel like you can only really play this part if you're giving it your all and pushing your hand like crazy. Slowling down is definitely a good start for practicing it, but I'm not sure what will really help in the long run. Maybe try different positions for your plucking hand. It might help you find a more comfortable spot to play this bit.
@@LeoBassCovers2 thanks for the reply! My problem is actually in my fretting hand, not my plucking hand - I'm having a hard time keeping up moving around the lower frets with my plucks at this speed. I feel pretty comfortable playing 16ths at the same tempo a few bars earlier with the other riff where it goes like this: 0 - - - 0 - 0 - 3 - 0 - - - 0 - - - - - 0 - 0 - 3 - 0 - 0 - 3. It only has 2 notes alternating, and one of them is an open string so the fretting hand doesn't move much, I just lift one finger and put it back. Also I have medium gauge flatwounds with pretty low action on right now and I don't think they like being downtuned to drop C lol. My low E is super loose and bouncing back and forth a lot which make it harder - there is a lot of fret buzz and clicks when I play this song. Maybe I should just change strings back to roundwounds and try it again, I do enjoy the sound of my flats for other songs though. :)
This riff will always sound messy I think. Low action and drop tuning is indeed not the best thing, especially if you feel like the strings are too loose. You could of course cut a little bit off of the string to make it less floppy.
I wish Porcupine Tree Resurrects, if it does I wish Colin becomes a part of it again but if he doesn't and Steven needs a new bassist then only Leo is the right person that is eligible enough to play with with them.
thanks
No problem!
@@LeoBassCovers2 You're an awesome musician!
buying new soul next?
Could you cover Intermediate Jesus by Porcupine Tree please?
Brotha, I would love to know what bass strings you usually use? great cover btw.
I use Warwick 40301M Black Label strings. (045 - 065 - 085 - 105 - 135)
@@LeoBassCovers2 Thank you bro, much appreciated.
In all honesty... you can do this for every PT song. :)
perfect S2
❤
just watched the live version of this, is he using a chorus pedal?
He used something like that for the intro. But I'm not quite sure if it's the same for the studio track. I wasn't convinced at the time
I’m really sad that this has an ad right in the middle of the hardest section. It’s fine after you get through it but the momentum of the song is lost :( I guess I should just get gud and play along with the record already.
oof.. and I have no control over that since the video is demonetized :\
nice work
what pickups are on the warwick?
Thanks! Apparently, they're active MEC J pickups.
:)
You have a 5 string, why would you detune your other strings? You often do that. If you need a open C string you could always tune C-E-A-D-G. Thats better string tension anyway.
It obviously would be, but that's not the point of a tutorial. Most bassists don't have a 5-string bass so I'm just sticking to the original tuning. I mess around with the tuning in my spare time.
Not gonna lie. I thought it was gonna be a parody of Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)
