By the way the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) is now a serious organization and on occasion advisor to the german government. It upholds the core principles of information freedom, personal liberties and net neutrality. The club has come a long way since the 80s without losing themselves or their chaos for that matter.
Imagine having a trillion dollars in hardware, hundreds of thousands of global employees, all the resources on the planet, and losing to one guy with like one iPhone
Congrats on doing this video. I learnt about Hagbard, Pengo, their team, what they were doing with KGB, their personal stories and of course CCC from a local computer magazine around late 90's or early 00's, never found anyone else mentioning them in youtube and back then in general english speaking internet parts. Pengo's story and skills was also very impressive (he is said that on an online fight with an admin, he developed a worm, possibly the first ever created, cause admin asked him to leave or something like this). Plenty of lessons can be taken from this story. For real, BRAVO! Literally, this story is imprinted in my mind, for YEARS, read it again and again so I could grasp every detail the story was talking about! :) THANK YOU!!! and happy new year btw ;)
In my early university days when the internet was young, the US cut Finland off because of a hacking incident. There were serious diplomatic efforts to mend the situation. Imagine something like that happening in the modern day.
Whenever I hear people talk about Illuminatus, I get the strong feeling most people are missing its sarcasm due to the modern context of disturbingly similar serious beliefs proliferating all around us. Wilson and Shea didn't think people would actually believe them. They were trying to clown on the Birchers while acknowledging the wildness of their times. They got way more than they bargained for when they published that book.
The Cuckoo's Egg is a brilliant retelling of this same story from Cliff's perspective. It's also worth tracking down the audiobook, narrated by the author himself. And buy some Klein bottles from him while you're at it!
One detail I remember from the book was that the SDI honeypot contained a flyer for government contractors to send mail to Lawrence Livermore for more information on an RFP. A known KGB asset responded and that's what really cinched it that this was espionage related...
You should check out the documentary "into the realm" that documents the Australian hacking groups that were operating at the same time and had a connection with the Germans.
@@Luxxotic Oh I assumed he used hunter because of the cigarette brand. Surely using a German word as a German was a bit of an oversight 😂 Or maybe he was taunting them

@@mihalachebogdan1 I first heard about it in 1995. His website Seti23 was literally the first thing I found when I first went on the internet. I was looking for the Seti website, found him instead..
I like how in the beginning of the video they try to downgrade him by calling him a drugee and serious mental issues, they then credit him with doing the first hack and describe him and like a powerful underworld figure. Man sounds like he was a genius.
14:30 information should be accessible to everyone. Well mostly (maybe not nuclear secrets) if every side knew what the other side was doing, might just help stop wars or more wars lol
Yea, I don't think Hagbard took his own life. Nor do I believe that there weren't actually important identifying documents that were used in the Project Showerhead honey pot. There were over 20 different scientists of various disciplines connected to the "Stars Wars Project" who were, imho, murdered in the most macabre and some times even tortuous ways. It's not very difficult logical leap to make, that Hagbards mysterious death was also a murder.
Ah the first trilogy... read those, and the rest As soon as you mentioned Hagbard my mind went straight to those books. Narrator came to same conclusion on it, a lot of facts mixed in with fiction, you have to check which is which to really understand it. Used to take us years to fact check as I was 13 when the first of the trilogy came out and was given to me. It too did change my life but not the same way. It openned my mind to new ideas. I'm now sixty. and found this very interesting. Got "Cosmic Trigger I (II is around here somewhere) Final secrets of the Illuminatti sat on my table next to me. There is also a second trilogy too oh as is Masks of the illuminatti... unless that is the title of two.

The 23 movie needs an international reboot and the second and third movie should be about what REALLY happened on PSN+SOE 2011 and Sony Pictures 2014...!
That trilogy of books would be rather dangerous for anyone with serious mental health issues, or identity issues. Even to what I consider my 'normal' mind at the time, it is designed to mess with you HARD. By the end of reading it, you literally do not know what is true or not anymore. It was designed specifically to cause that confusion, and the book is so bold that it tells you that within the text. Robert Anton Wilson knew *exactly* what he was doing, and he and Shea made it happen. Fnord
Thought it sounded familiar within about 30 seconds.. Wierd that 3 years earlier I lived near Hannover, however I was only 7 or 8 at the time. Just noticed.. the book is on the desk.
Hey, thanks for the comment! There is a book that served as a major source of inspiration for the second chapter of this video: CYBERPUNK: Outlaws and Hackers on the Computer Frontier, by Katie Hafner and John Markoff. It details the German side of the story and has plenty of other great information. Also, there are many other books, articles, and documentaries, you can find all of them in our list of sources (linked in the description).
@cybernews awesome thank you!! Did you ever read the book by that Japnese guy who tracked down Kevin Mitnik ? I read it about 20-25 years ago, very good 👍
Definitely can’t just wake up and open RUclips and jump into something this deep. I thought this said how Gene Hackman sold us secrets to the kgb…. I was like oh shit Gene Hackman was a spy 😂😂😂😂
To be fair he'd be more valuable to any government alive so the idea of him going out on his own terms isn't crazy

First law of probability is: "If there is a greater than 0% chance of any event occurring, it will occur." Conspiracy theories are just stories we make up in our minds or others minds and we choose to believe or disbelieve... Until they happen. More simply, if you can imagine it, then maybe you can make it true.
Funny isnt it how long it took to code for graphics as good as the opening sequence back in the 80's. That (if possible) would have burned your brain out, crashed your hardware a million times and your tape saves would have had to have been on brand new tapes - instead of the C60 one you had been dubbing over few hundred times. But you'd likely land a job with a software firm pretty quick: and be found dead floating face down in an indoor swimming pool of Jack Daniels and dissolved cocaine. 🤣
We hope you've enjoyed! In our last explainer, we ran a small contest. The person who won it is honored in this video. Can you find their name?
That book.
Hagbart?

The Cuckoo’s Egg is a detailed book on the whole story written by Stoll himself. Very good.
No they can be equally boring
