The neutron star would accrete mass but as it this happens the in falling matter gets so hot that the radiation pressure outward pushes the matter away and limits the rate of inflow. So it can take a long time before the mass increase of the neutron star gets to the Tillman Oppenheimer volkov limit above which it can’t survive and in theory collapses to a black hole - though you might want to watch my video “Quark Stars and strange matter” for more on that. It won’t explode - and that’s partly because red giant stars are basically red hot vacuum- very very low density - so the neuron star can enter and hardly notice.
