Austin Close Just checking first, it is a strat or copy strat ? If it is, it sounds like you haven't pushed the string through saddle (which is the bit with a screw and a spring holding it in. The string must not only go through the main tremolo system but also the the loose bits (which are the saddles).
Damn I haven’t played the my guitar in 10 years all of a sudden I had the bright idea to start learning but the high E string had other plans and snapped but thanks for the vid
That is an urban myth . . don't worry, it doesn't do the guitar any harm at all. Keep the guitar in a stable'ish' environment, not in direct sunlight or direct heat and not in the damp and it should be fine. I have seen way more damage done to guitars over time because they have been left fully strung and tuned up.
You must to realize a lot of times people haven't changed their strings in a long time! Many times, in my experience, the string will be LODGED in there so tight (sweat and grim over months...) that you actually need to POKE it out. Un-bend any sturdy paper-clip and use as a reaming tool, or poking tool ,to disengage it. Then you'll be set. Keep a paper clip in your wallet and help some band onstage, be a hero! Thanks, love the vids! Cheers.
+Duncan H on most electric guitars, the standard strings fitted by the manufacturer are 9's so any 9 gauge electric guitar strings will do the job. But you will never get strings to sound exactly the same as the strings that are on the guitar because the tone of the strings changes over time as they get oxidized and work hardened.
Can you do a video on older fenders that have grooves not holes, My guitar is 20 years old, I just have never been able to string em, no problem on my acoustic, that has holes.
GCH Guitar Academy When I try this the needle peeps out from the bottom, but the remaining piece of the string just stays there. I guess I should bring it to a guitar-shop or something? Thank you for the reply anyway :)

All u need to do is find like a long skinny straight stick and put it through the hole both ways until u pop it out but be careful not to damage the innards of the guitar cause let me tell ya nothing sucks worse than having damaged wires or whatever else is in there
Have you tried the trick in the video, where you get a cut peace of string and loop it through the stuck part of the guitar string, then use this to pull at the stuck string. If it is stuck at the other end, us a stiff wire or something fine that can push the string out.
Replaced my high E, the worrying beforehand was way worse than the actual replacing, lol. Still kind of worried it'll just snap when I strum it a few times though hah.
No . . you are OK, you haven't broken the guitar. The part of the bridge you are talking about is called the saddle and it is held in place by the pressure of the string. It is only loose when you have no string, so straighten it up so it looks like the other saddles and put a new string on and it will be perfect.
My thinnest string just broke but it’s very small and I can’t push it through all the way without cutting my fingers so can you pls pls post a video of that because I might’ve just caused a lot of damage to the actual guitar because before I watched this video, I took the springs on the bottle out and I can’t get them back it so pls pls help
This happens commonly enough, you have to push the end of the sting out with anything you have to hand. I use the thickest string I have, or a cocktail stick, or a needle file or a long thin nail . . . anything that fits basically. 😊

Use something long and thin . . a cocktail stick or a piece of wire or even the thick string to push it out from the top . . Hopefully that should do the job 😊
Yes, that's normal if the tremolo is 'Floating'. A floating tremolo is one that can be pulled up as well as pushed down, or if you look at the tremolo from body height you will see it is slightly raised. If you don't want/need it to float you can tighten the springs behind the back inspection plate and that will make it easier to tune. Otherwise, it just takes a little longer to retune the guitar, because you have to do it several times.
First tell the shop what type of guitar it is electric or acoustic. Then you have to describe which string is broken, the strings from think to thin are 'bottom E', A, D, G, B 'top E'.
No, this is a common misconception but it is an urban myth. The idea came from classical stringed instruments like the violin where the sound post could fall down if you remove all the strings at once, which would be bad.
because it is the thinnest string the top E is the most common to break. If it gets stuck you just have to find something to puck it out, like a cocktail stick or a long needle or a piece of wire. 🤔
I need help.... I know how to restring my strat, but it seems that when I do, my tremolo system is being yanked outwards away from the body. As if someone what pulling up on the tremolo bar... I can't find a solution anywhere and nobody is helping... Please leave what to do below
There is a chance you're using the wrong gauge strings, if your guitar was setup to handle the tension of 9's for example and you put 11's on it it would add more strain to the bridge causing it to come further of the body.
I try to push it through the back and the circle on the end of the string won't push through fully and I can't get the full length of the string and I broke my high e, the replacement, the d and it's replacement and I only have 4 strings now and I'm pissed
Don't try to put the new stings in until you've got all the old strings out . . completely. If the ball at the end gets stuck, find something narrow enough to go through the hole and push it out from the top of the guitar. You should fine then . . .
@@guitar-academy well yeah i take the off one out fully but you know when your putting the new string in from the back, the ball doesnt look like it goes in fully compared to the other ones, i think i know what i did wrong though, i put it through the whole on the headstock and i started tuning it up, i never gave the string a little push so i tried tuning it up while it was already tight, it was a waste of 2 spare strings but at least i know now, thank you for this video i have ordered more strings and i will use this video to do it properly, thank you for your help, i gave this video a like and i subbed to your channel 👍👍

My High E string is out of tune and I'm tuning it but its already tight enough and my tuner says the tuning is "D" if I Adjust again the tuning machines my string will break. What will I Do please Help me :(
There are 2 possibilities I can think of . . It is possible you have gone too high, in which case you need to down-tune the string and start again. The top 'E' string should sound the same as the 'B' string (next string down) with your finger in the 5th fret. Then you can use the tuner to fine tune it. The other possibility is that the tuner is wrong. If this is the case, find a friend or go to a music shop where you can compare your tuning to the tuning on a guitar that you know is in tune. There is a tuner on the web site in the description that is free and might help.
Pugito Pitapayle to be completely honest, I can't answer that question without hearing the guitar. So I would suggest you find someone who knows how to tune a guitar yto help you.
Does the number of winding around the post have anything to do with strings breaking. My guitarist only puts one or two windings around the post and is alway coming out of tune and busting strings. Whats the rule for windings around the post, and how does this affect the string? He plays a MIM strat. Thanks again
+Rizz Bot A couple of string winds should be OK generally, but you might find the hole in the post has a sharp edge on it and a couple of swipes with a small file sorts it out. There is no fixed rule and every guitarist prefers to do his own thing, but if it is braking at the top near the post I would put a couple more winds on it.
OK so which way do you put put the end of the string into the tuney hole thingy. Do you put it in the facing away from the lower half of the guitar or put it in, making the end of the string go towards the guitar? I need help.
Put the string through the back of the guitar first as I show in the video. Then as long as the string is routed correctly you can put it through the hole any way, it doesn't matter because when you tune it up it will wrap around the tuner anyway . . . 🙂
I got the A string caught up around the bit where the hole for it is at the headstock in a sort of knot. I didn't realise, and tried to tighten it. then the string broke :( haha it gives you such a shock when it happens! I don't like changing strings haha, I guess it's what happens on your first try though
I have been changing string for over 20 years and I still feel uncomfortable tuning the guitar up for the first time. I have only ever had a string brake at that stage once or twice but I am still careful . . but it's probably the best way to be :-)
try pushing it through using a needle, of a cocktail stick or even part of the thickest string, basically anything long and thin that you have around you . . 🤔
You can try realigning the hole in the tremolo block with the hole in the backplate using the tremolo bar. If this doesn't work remove the backplate. It is important not to over tighten the backplate when you put it back on, or the plastic can crack.
@@guitar-academy thanks. It’ll be a long time until I restring because mines only a cheap guitar and works fine for now, and I don’t trust myself modding it just yet
make sure you can see through the hole, because sometimes the end of the old string can be left inside the hole. If the hole is blocked push the old string end out with something thin and stiff enough like a cocktail stick or a long needle. Sometimes it can just be that the saddle is out of line so you just need to try various angles to get it through. I hope this helps 😃
I have my strat at home and I have a problem.. when I tune the guitar, the tension pulls the trem system as I turn the machine head, and so it never gets in tune.. help
This is happening because the tremolo system is set to float. In other words when you eventually get it in tune the tremolo can go up and down. If you don't use this feature you can tighten the springs up behind the plastic plate on the back of the guitar and it will tune properly.
is the string going over the saddle and through the nut as described in the video ? and is the string straight and not going around anything else or any of the other strings ?
@@guitar-academy yes sir, thats correct. I check everything and found all in order from outside...I suspected maybe something is wrong from the inside...or is there any special type of string to be only used on electric guitar?
@@moxkaloyvlogs5695 Yes, you do have to use electric guitar strings, or steal strings because they have to be magnetic. If you have used a nylon string or any none magnetic material this would stop it from working. The pickup works across all the strings, so if the sound of the other strings is ok, then the electrics of the guitar is fine.
@@moxkaloyvlogs5695 It might be worth you taking the guitar to the store and let them tell you what's wrong. Without being able to look at the guitar it is nearly impossible to know what is wrong with it . . unfortunately.
Ahhh, the locking nut usually partners with a Floyd Rose or an equivalent tremolo system, so you might find you need to seek out the appropriate tutorial. It is worth while finding one because they are more difficult to restring that most guitars.
The string bullets are stuck inside the place where you insert or remove the strings. is there any way i can remove them without taking my guitar to a music store?
Just by finding something thin enough to fit through the hole from the top of your guitar, and then tap it out. A long needle is good or sometimes a metal cocktail stick or something like that.
WhatsMyName The tremolo system is made out of strong metal and I have never known one to brake, even after being banged with a hammer. But obviously don't whack it like a mad man . . :)

You will have to replace the string with a new one. They do brake randomly from time to time, the guitar could have been tuned too high or the guitar could have got warm in the sun or by a heater. It happens from time to time so it's a good idea to have a spare set of strings, just in case.

I broke the thinnest e string and is it normal for it not to fit out
because it is the thinnest string the top E is the most common to break. If it gets stuck you just have to find something to puck it out, like a cocktail stick or a long needle or a piece of wire. 🤔
The string should have a little ball on the end to stop it going through. You have a broken sting or the wrong type of string for the guitar . . .
What abt the little materials that holds the strings on the back
Great stuff . .
and because it's your own guitar you'll do a better job and be more careful.
Thank you this was very helpful🙂
Thank you for watching . . . 😊
My string snapped during soloing! Damn you hotel California!
worth braking a string for though . .
My guitar is a hand me down from my big grother, the 2 strings I need out are stuck. lol
Man i am having the same problem with my friends guitar.i dont think he has changes strings once
Did you ever fix it?
I do . . . good luck matey
Thank you so much my mom would’ve beat my ass if she found out my guitar string was broken
I'm glad I saved you an ass beating . . . thanks for watching 😊😃
Thanks a lot, that video really made it clear, and helped much.
Got my guitar not even a day ago and snapped the thin e string. Its not a strat but looks the same just ine less knob.
What a pain . . as long as the tuners and the tremolo are similar I'm sure you'll work out what to do😊
I try to push it through the back and the circle on the end of the string won't push through fully and I can't get the full length of the string and I broke my high e, the replacement, the d and it's replacement and I only have 4 strings now and I'm pissed
@@ianmullally3483 Thank you very much . . . 😊
@@guitar-academy no problem mate, thank you 😊👍
I ended up breaking a thin e string but the ball is still inside the guitar, no string for me to grab and remove it.
This happens commonly enough, you have to push the end of the sting out with anything you have to hand. I use the thickest string I have, or a cocktail stick, or a needle file or a long thin nail . . . anything that fits basically. 😊
So I need it to down tune itself or the other strings to ?
I think my Tuner is betraying me Lol :D
Pugito Pitapayle to be completely honest, I can't answer that question without hearing the guitar. So I would suggest you find someone who knows how to tune a guitar yto help you.
GCH Guitar Academy OK. Thank you for some tips
You save my life
LOL . . I don't know what to say to that 😀🤔
OK so which way do you put put the end of the string into the tuney hole thingy. Do you put it in the facing away from the lower half of the guitar or put it in, making the end of the string go towards the guitar? I need help.
Put the string through the back of the guitar first as I show in the video. Then as long as the string is routed correctly you can put it through the hole any way, it doesn't matter because when you tune it up it will wrap around the tuner anyway . . . 🙂
@@guitar-academy thanks dude. Big help!
@@chalkyb326 No problem . . I hope you get your guitar sorted . . 🙂
Sean Bean? Is that you?
I bought two packs of strings and snapped them on both attempts I wasted 14$ so far love it im starting to hate my guitar 😂
That's sounds like a nightmare . . 😊🤔
I been playing master of puppets solo with no high e string 😭
😢 oh no . .
this video was a great tutorial
you're northern therefore you're brilliant
yey . . bang on . . 😊
@@guitar-academy mad for it
is it normal for the high E to break?
it's very thin, so if it's old enough or it's been over tuned then yes . . 🤔
I have only ever had a string brake at that stage once or twice but I am still careful . . but it's probably the best way to be :-)
GCH Guitar Academy haha yeah you have to be so careful with it! I'm gonna buy another A string now. I'll probably get my brother to do it :)
:-)
How guitar string broke and irs sticking on what do i do
try pushing it through using a needle, of a cocktail stick or even part of the thickest string, basically anything long and thin that you have around you . . 🤔
I can't seem to get the string out through the back plate. Should i open up the backplate?
You can try realigning the hole in the tremolo block with the hole in the backplate using the tremolo bar. If this doesn't work remove the backplate. It is important not to over tighten the backplate when you put it back on, or the plastic can crack.
k, thanks!
I don’t have holes at the back of my guitar? How do I get it out?
it sounds like you might have a fixed bridge? if you have they are on the top of the guitar.
@@guitar-academy the circles on the end of the strings that they pull out of the back are at the bottom of the bridge for me
@@JackSanderson.MP3 ah, that's less common on a Strat, the rest of the restringing process remains the same though, so you should be OK. 😊
@@guitar-academy thanks. It’ll be a long time until I restring because mines only a cheap guitar and works fine for now, and I don’t trust myself modding it just yet
@@JackSanderson.MP3 Yeah . . playing it is way more important and more fun . . 😊
Mine string tip ball gets stuck in the guitar hole😠
This happens to a lot of people. You need to push it out with a long needle, tooth pick, thicker guitar string or anything that is thin enough to fit.
This is perfect for me bc that is the exact string i broke 😅
great stuff 😊😀
why my string is not going through the hole? Is it my problem or is there dust in there?
make sure you can see through the hole, because sometimes the end of the old string can be left inside the hole. If the hole is blocked push the old string end out with something thin and stiff enough like a cocktail stick or a long needle. Sometimes it can just be that the saddle is out of line so you just need to try various angles to get it through.
I hope this helps 😃
many thanks for the vids, i have your two disk starter pack but missplaced them doh!!
They loose flexibility with time and become 'work hardened' that's why the sometimes snap.
Mind you . . I have had new ones snap . .
I changed my e string, but afterwards it is not making any sound through the amplifier. Can somebody give me an advice? Tnx
is the string going over the saddle and through the nut as described in the video ? and is the string straight and not going around anything else or any of the other strings ?
@@guitar-academy yes sir, thats correct. I check everything and found all in order from outside...I suspected maybe something is wrong from the inside...or is there any special type of string to be only used on electric guitar?
@@moxkaloyvlogs5695 Yes, you do have to use electric guitar strings, or steal strings because they have to be magnetic. If you have used a nylon string or any none magnetic material this would stop it from working. The pickup works across all the strings, so if the sound of the other strings is ok, then the electrics of the guitar is fine.
@@guitar-academy yes i used a steel one, and i was thinking maybe an appropriate string is needed..that thing I forgot to ask from the store.
@@moxkaloyvlogs5695 It might be worth you taking the guitar to the store and let them tell you what's wrong. Without being able to look at the guitar it is nearly impossible to know what is wrong with it . . unfortunately.
Thanks for your video..
thank you for watching . . . 😊😊
GCH Guitar Academy please support my channel..
My disortion guitar is a harlem x and it has some kind of lock box at the neck how do you deal with that?
That sounds like a locking nut . . . you need to find a specialist tutorial for locking nuts.
Thank you, really couldn't find what the part was called.
Ahhh, the locking nut usually partners with a Floyd Rose or an equivalent tremolo system, so you might find you need to seek out the appropriate tutorial. It is worth while finding one because they are more difficult to restring that most guitars.
Is it the same on a squier?
Yes it is . .
GCH Guitar Academy thank you
Thank you so so much. Life saver.
You're welcome! thank you 😊😃
The string bullets are stuck inside the place where you insert or remove the strings. is there any way i can remove them without taking my guitar to a music store?
Just by finding something thin enough to fit through the hole from the top of your guitar, and then tap it out. A long needle is good or sometimes a metal cocktail stick or something like that.
i tried many needles but its stuck for good. maybe if i knock it out with force itll be fine? im worried because i dont want to break my guitar
WhatsMyName The tremolo system is made out of strong metal and I have never known one to brake, even after being banged with a hammer.
But obviously don't whack it like a mad man . . :)
Hahaha :)) thanks anyways ill try my best to fix it. if it doesnt work i guess im gonna have to maybe replace the tremolo system or take it to a music store
I was watching RUclips and heard a ping from my guitar and the spring broke for no reason, it's new, I don't know what to do. Someone reply asap, I'm worried as to what my parents will say😬
You will have to replace the string with a new one. They do brake randomly from time to time, the guitar could have been tuned too high or the guitar could have got warm in the sun or by a heater. It happens from time to time so it's a good idea to have a spare set of strings, just in case.
