      I was a fairly active person until I was 75. I was tap dancing for 11 years and our multi generational group competed in Canada and internationally! I felt great! But then something slowly happened and my muscles got progressively weaker. I wasn’t exercising nearly as much and when you don’t use your muscles, they simply get weaker and weaker! I would say that it is SARCOPENIA, which means “muscle wasting”. I never thought this would happen to me!
      I then needed right hip replacement which really prevented me from exercising which meant more muscle loss! I turned 80 a few months ago and had my hip replaced, and have found that your videos are so good!
      I have been to physiotherapists but get more help from your videos! I can watch them over and over again, and you have exercises for every problem, and I love the way you present them.
      Most importantly, you have some excellent videos on BALANCE!
      I cannot walk without a cane because I will lose my balance, and then I saw the one you did with trekking poles. Great video! I had bought some at Costco but really didn’t know how to use them, or the right height they should be. You explained it all. So now I am going to start using them as well as my cane, along with all your “balance advice.”
      Love you guys!!!

    Many senior centers have free or low cost balance and fall prevention classes. I recently finished a course call “Matter of Balance” through my local senior center and the class featured the exercises that you just showed and extra information on overcoming fear of falling, adopting assertive tactics and replacing negative thoughts with positive ones regarding issues of balance and exercise. Love you guys! ❤

    😅I just heard about Bob than saw the update but couldn’t find how to comment so came back here to to comment. In the first place Bob i Dont see a problem when you talk 😊you just sound like you’re thinking very hard for the right words to convey your advice to us in a way we non- therapists can understand and follow. Unless talking a lot is exhausting and/or painful to you any videos you feel like making would be welcome by all I’m sure. You and Brad will always be in my heart and prayers just like my family are. GOD Bless

    I was fortunate to be accepted into a specialized physiotherapy group to achieve a proper gait. As I went through the 6 week program I couldn’t but think how many falls could be prevented if the elderly had such help available.

    I teach balance and chair yoga senior fitness classes at a local senior center, many of these videos posted on my channel. Most of these centers have great has fitness classes that are extremely cheap. Our center just started to allow silver sneakers or renew active as a membership where you can essentially go to the gym for free (from the government assisted programs) assuming your insurance covers it. Something to look into for your local area!

    It's funny how much of these sort of movements I find in tai chi. I practice a few styles but shibashi does some toe extensions and curls, Yang style has the side stepping (wave hands like clouds) and such like. I recommend tai chi to anyone who's interested but the more exercises I see, the more I see how tai chi covers so much of them, an easy way to get in some stretches during the day in a way that doesn't necessarily feel like making time for exercise :)

    QUESTION - I just turned 77 and am in good to excellent physical heath about 51/2 months ago broke my right leg about 2 or 3 inches below the hip joint and had a titanium rod inserted. I think I have recovered well and can do most things that i could before. The problem is that now my right leg seems much stronger than my left, both visually and functionally, especially in regard to my balance. If I keep doing exercises such as these, will my left leg eventually catch up to my right? Should I be doing more reps on the left side than the right to help the process along? I've been relying on you and your videos for the last several years and credit your team often when ask how I stay so fit for my age. I thank you both Bob and Brad for that and now Mike.

    Im 73 and walk 3 or 4 miles a day 3 times a week.I fell on a walking trail where the cement was lifted by tree roots.I live in a 55+ community(Sun City) and if i report it they will pull out the tree.I dont want that too happen.I caught my fall with my hands...nothing broke but my fingers felt sprained for a week and a bit purple.

    • @AlphaGeekgirl
      @AlphaGeekgirl Год назад +1

      That’s pretty selfish and irresponsible. If you know that there is a tree root that could cause someone else to fall, then you really should report it. Not always will they tear down the tree. Where I live, they put in a short railing to hold onto as removing the tree was not possible. In other instances, they may even move the path!

      I’m in an over 55 community, too. It took over 6 months for the association to fix the uneven sidewalk where my tennis shoe got caught. I was walking home from line dancing and I’m pretty active. Others had fallen in that area, too, but nothing was done until I was vocal. Always report these things….I broke my wrist. A hip, shoulder, arm, etc, would have been worse!

    For going down a steeper than normal stairs ( which also has a shorter front to back) I have learned to bump my heel into the upright board at my heel for each step before putting down my weight on that step, that way I know my balance is actually over the flat of the step and not on the edge where my toes can tilt down triggering a fall.
