There were two stories about the English speaking of airline pilots, whether they are true or not I have no idea but they went like this: A German airline pilot a few years after the war was asking for departure permission at Berlin airport and asked for it in German. The air controller reminded him that he had to speak English and the pilot said "I'm a German pilot sitting in a German airlines plane on a German airport - why should I have to speak English" another pilot broke into the radio with an obviously British accent and said "Because we won the bloody war!" The second story, also soon after the war involved a British pilot asking for repeated detailed instructions on which runway he should be heading for on approach to Berlin and the arrogant German controller exclaimed "What's the matter, haven't you ever flown to Berlin before?" The pilot replied "Yes, I've flown to Berlin many times - I just never needed to land here before though!"

Even more wondering than the uniforms is that they can go in ranks to certain death, just not giving a damn about it...on at least it looks like that... . When enough enemies can do that, then return fires in numbers, then I understand that your own army just break ranks and flies to cover...

Sorax777 It’s not really irrelevant if you want to compare the quality of the two armies. It’s pretty clear to me (and everyone else) that the British army was far superior to the continental army. If it wouldn’t have been for the French and Spanish Great Britain would most likely have won this war. This is coming from a Swedish person.
Maybe, maybe not. It's very difficult to prosecute a war several thousand miles from home. Besides it was a very unpopular war. We (the Brits) were not fighting American (as folks know them now that is). We were fighting other Brits, Scots, Irish etc. It was almost a civil war. You have to wonder though, what it would have been like if the British had won. I doubt the Jim Crow laws would have stood, there would have been no segregation and the UK got rid of slavery 30 odd years or so before the US. The Americans would have entered WW2 in 1939. And America would still be independent today. Still, with the good would come the bad, I'm not saying it would have been better. But it would have been "interesting".

It's amazing how people living on some small North European island were able to dominate 1/3 of the world. Now we have to use their language to communicate with foreigners, language that comes from small island in North Europe. Let that sink in
It only really sank in for me when I started working globally. My colleagues all speak several languages including English and I just speak English but as a native. This gives me an incredible amount of power and influence that I don't really deserve!

There's something so magical about their uniforms that I can't find words to describe it....
It doesn't matter if you win or lose a battle, provided you look good doing it. ;)
Even more wondering than the uniforms is that they can go in ranks to certain death, just not giving a damn about it...on at least it looks like that...
.
When enough enemies can do that, then return fires in numbers, then I understand that your own army just break ranks and flies to cover...

That seat of science Athens,
And earth's proud mistress, Rome,
Where now are all their glories
We scarce can find a tomb.
Then guard your rights, Americans,
Nor stoop to lawless sway,
Oppose, oppose, oppose, oppose
For North America.
Proud Albion bow'd to Caesar,
And numerous lords before,
To Picts, to Danes, to Normans,
And many masters more;
But we can boast Americans
Have never fall'n a prey,
Huzza, huzza, huzza, huzza
For Free America.
We led fair Freedom hither,
And lo, the desert smiled,
A paradise of pleasure
New opened in the wild;
Your harvest, bold Americans,
No power shall snatch away,
Preserve, preserve, preserve your rights
In Free America.
Torn from a world of tyrants
Beneath this western sky
We formed a new dominion,
A land of liberty;
The world shall own we're freemen here,
And such will ever be,
Huzza, huzza, huzza, huzza
For love and liberty.
God bless this maiden climate,
And through her vast domain
May hosts of heroes cluster
That scorn to wear a chain.
And blast the venal sycophants
Who dare our rights betray;
Assert yourselves, yourselves, yourselves
For brave America,
Lift up your hearts, my heroes,
And swear with proud disdain,
The wretch that would ensnare you
Shall spread his net in vain;
Should Europe empty all her force,
We'd meet them in array,
And shout huzza, huzza, huzza
For brave America.
The land where freedom reigns shall still
Be masters of the main,
In giving laws and freedom
To subject France and Spain;
And all the isles o'er ocean spread
Shall tremble and obey,
The prince who rules by Freedom's laws
In North America.

The British won 70% of the major 100 battles in the civil war 1775-83
Irrelevant. They lose after all.
Sorax777 It’s not really irrelevant if you want to compare the quality of the two armies. It’s pretty clear to me (and everyone else) that the British army was far superior to the continental army. If it wouldn’t have been for
the French and Spanish Great Britain would most likely have won this war.
If you class it as a civil war, wouldn't it be 100%?
I would say about 80%
There's almost beauty in all of it. Marching chest up, drums beating, flags waiving, straight into enemy fire to win the day.
