You are so funny, Aubrey - I appreciate your sly, dry wit. I have to stay sharp or I might miss something 😁 I did a 333 capsule wardrobe last summer and it went so well. I mostly stayed within the guidelines of 33 items (with similar exceptions as you, though I didn't count shoes...) and never felt like I didn't have anything for any occasion that might pop up. I was never bored - and most importantly, never stressed. Fast forward to this summer: I put all my summer clothes, plus some (ok, many) new acquisitions, into my closet and it is jam packed and I am overwhelmed with the magnitude of it. I was just having difficulty deciding what to keep in there this time around and so I kept it all. And now I am stressed out. I know the answer is a good declutter (already in progress) and a vow to go back to 33 items for my fall wardrobe. Your capsule is really cute, very functional, and seems very you. You look great - even wearing the white influencer shirt 😂
I’m happy to be keeping you on your toes haha. I like your idea of not counting shoes. That gives you a little extra wiggle room for things that you may not wear a lot, but may need to have on hand circumstantially. And that is still probably more minimal than what many of our closets were once upon a time. Though it sounds like yours is in a transitional state with a little extra abundance. Never a bad thing, except when it’s stressful I suppose. 😅 Thankfully Fall is on the horizon. I feel like making the transition from one season to a next always puts some perspective on certain items and it makes the decision process a lot easier when it comes to what stays and what goes… even if that is putting it all in a tote to think about next summer. That last part is probably not responsible advice. 🤣 But sometimes things just need time. 😅
@@SimplifyingTheSatherns I'm already pondering fall and how I can cut back, but it's still a ways off here in Virginia. Maybe I should begin putting some summer things away now? My problem with the new acquisitions began with a change in lifestyle: after years of wearing black and grey (I was in perpetual mourning having to spend my days in an office job) I changed paths and with it I ventured into collecting some more colorful pieces (not vibrant-colorful, mind you 😉 that's perhaps a bridge too far) to sync with my changing moods and (mostly) contented outlook. So, yes, bins are essential as there is no way I'm ready to declutter most of it, and it's nice knowing I have the option of wearing my Morticia garb again if the mood strikes. I am impressed with your self-control and will endeavor to be as careful as you, even if a few bins are involved in the background!
I think tucking things away that you know you can live without is a good start to get a handle on how the current quantity makes you feel. And I really think that 33 doesn’t have to be the magical number. Even if it’s 55. As long as you’re feeling burdened by what you have. Maybe even keeping the clothes that fit whatever mood you’re in the most accessible, then tucking some of those blacks and greys or whatever you’re not the most drawn towards away in a place where you can grab them easily if you so wish, but not having them in a position of creating so much excess that where you feel overwhelmed. It’s been an adjustment living like this, but I suppose it was easy to part with things when I really didn’t like a lot of what I had, and easy not to acquire more than I needed now that we’re a family of one income. 😅Things probably would be different with more money and less kids haha.
@@SimplifyingTheSatherns Thanks so much for your support and encouragement! Yesterday I pulled three skirts out of my closet - strangely none of them black or grey! - and put them in a bag to take to my cousin next month. BUT I was unable to resist a pair of pinky-peach jeans that are winging their way to me now 😑 At least I'm still ahead of the game: 3 out - 1 in. Next to declutter: old t-shirts. Have a great day!
Thank you for sharing this. It is so nice and refreshing to see a more ‘real’ and ‘normal’ life and wardrobe as opposed to all the ‘sponsored’/ gifted RUclipsrs who wear 100’s of dollars worth of really impractical clothing.
Thank you for saying that. 💕 I try so hard to be as real and transparent as possible with these videos. I know it’s not necessarily the most popular, but the internet is full of so much “real life” that is more often than not the most unrealistic crap I’ve ever seen. 🙃
Your light blue dress with cream cardigan outfit is my favourite by far. It doesn’t look ‘silly’ AT ALL. You look so nice in all the other dress outfits as well. My second favourite is the white dress with the longish ‘green’ cardigan.
I really do love that blue dress with all my heart. 😁 I just worry it looks silly with the Keds. But I guess it really is cute in like a.. Laura Ingalls goes to tennis practice kind of way? 😂
Yes! I get what you are saying about putting a couple of items in your wardrobe that may be “fantasy”. I did that with hats. I use hats for the shade, but I really love hats and they add so much to an outfit. I’m retired and my top priority is comfort. I think I’m invisible when I go out! 😂
Oh hats are so fun! I have 2 that I never wear haha. But I can see how adding a hat to a simple outfit can really jazz it up. I have a friend who wears baseball caps every once in a while and I feel like that simple addition adds so much to an outfit. It makes an invisible outfit visible. 😅
Our style is so so similar which is why I love each and every outfit and why I get so much inspiration out of your capsule wardrobe videos. In addition I‘m also a cool summer type which helps with the color pallet😄
Well yay!!! I love that! It’s one of my favorite things when I find someone whose style I can find inspiration from and ACTUALLY still like in the long run. I will say it doesn’t happen often. 😭😅 Have you found any colors that absolutely make you look like the worst version of yourself? I tried making rust orange for me and it was so terrible. 😵💫
@@SimplifyingTheSatherns So true! I feel like most women wear clothes that look way cuter, more ‘stylish’ or more feminine than me which I also find so nice but I realized that’s just not me. I like my jeans better than dresses or skirts, I like cleaner and simpler looks like just a one-colored tshirt and shorts better than a playful blouse but above all, my clothes have to be practical for every day life (with 4 seasons)🤷♀️ And that is okay. I found my key words are Casual - Comfy - Natural - Simple - Minimal - Clean - Practical and I try to stick to them when it comes to new purchases. And yes absolutely😄 All nuances of yellow, orange and almost every tone of red and beige makes me look absolutely sick. But contrary to that I love all shades of (greenish) turquoise/mint green or basically every color of the ocean (if it’s not too light or dark) and whenever I wear them I feel my absolute best and also get compliments😊
I love how you added the random things you wore at the end. So relatable. You're awesome. P.S. your least favorite favorite outfit was my favorite hah.
It felt necessary to start documenting those unstructured clothing moments. 😅 I was waiting for someone to like that last outfit the most lol. It's been a reliable backup haha.
I know you didn’t ask for requests…lol but I would love to see your herbal go - tos / medicine cabinet. I think you mentioned it in a past video and I am so interested but also sort of clueless. Anyways, I really appreciate the content you put out into the world! So funny and genuine and relatable and lovely.
Maybe I should ask for requests. 😁 I totally forgot that I mentioned that, and I’m glad you brought it up! It seems like the time for that video will be soon with Fall and Winter approaching. 😭 Thank you for your kind words and for watching. 😊💕
I appreciate that your casual and everyday. Its like my wardrobe although i dont feel like ive been in any of my summer wear as summers missed us here in scotland this year. Im mainly in vest shirt and bottoms. Looking forward to your autumn wardrobe. Im starting to introduce peices now from my capsule due to weather. Guess its my transitional wardrobe x
Oh no! Our Summer hasn’t been as summery as they usually are either. We just spent the last few days in our rain coats and rain boots. But I’m sure it’s a totally different level in Scotland! Stay cozy. ☺️
It just feels so light and free! And you’re totally right about the cotton poplin button up. Much more chic and put together. I personally couldn’t be trusted with such a shirt. 😅
I love your approach to these. It makes it feel far less daunting. At the beginning of summer I tried to start a 333 (how I found your channel actually). Every other video and blog post just didn’t seem to fit where I’m at in life, but I was also so sick of all the pre baby clothes that didn’t fit taunting me. It’s going okay, I definitely added more to my wardrobe than intended but largely because I was able to see functional gaps rather than just getting frustrated every morning and staying in whatever I slept in. 😂 But this idea of having items I might reach for once a season if that makes me feel so much better. When I was in school or still going into an office picking my outfit for the day was my creative outlet and brought me so much joy. Granted I had far more clothes than any woman truly needs. But transitioning to working from home and then becoming a mom had me really floundering. I’m really looking forward to fall (for many reasons 😂) and seeing how a second 333 attempt goes.
Are we the same person? I know exactly what you’re saying. Transitioning into motherhood is challenging in so many ways, and I feel like what it does to our creative outlet via clothing is something nobody really talks about… probably because in the beginning we’re too tired to care about that and we’re just focused on what doesn’t fit haha. But I think now as the littles get older it’s easier to see how our wardrobes may not feel as fulfilling as they were once upon a time. Especially for those of us who once got dressed to function in an office setting and had an adult version of a dress up box. 😅🤣 It’s very different going from that to not having to leave your house. ☹️ I’m also looking forward to Fall. Things slow down, all the food is cozy and I can stop shaving my legs as frequently. 🤣 Basically I just become a bear. 😅🤷🏻♀️
Hahahaha the similarities are there 😂 but I feel like this has to be a general mom issue. And you’re right it probably is that we’re all too exhausted to care. I’ve been in the conundrum lately where we’ve left the spit up days but have entered the messy fingers all day long stage. So I want to get dressed, I feel better when I do…but do I really want to change 5 times and stain treat 3 shirts…no… Yes! I definitely had my work clothes and my weekend clothes. And it made getting dressed so fun and exciting. Now I only leave my house a few times a week and one of those trips is usually to my in laws. Fall just makes my heart happy. I’m just my best self when it’s chilly and there’s pumpkin everything.
This time next year things will be better! Still messy, but like… a manageable messy. 🤷🏻♀️😅 I’m also only leaving the house here and there was well and I can’t validate dressing up unless I have a reason to leave my property haha. Though sometimes that really leaves me in a funk.. But back to school is coming and I strive not to be the pj mom at the bus stop or at pickup… but there are days where I just can’t get real clothes on until 1pm. 😅 Fall and Winter are hard for me because I just hate when everything I put on in the morning is cold. ESPECIALLY JEANS. 🤮
Oh that’s what this Mama needed to hear. 😂 My mother in law came by the other day so I could go to the doctor for myself and I was like okay I just need to get dressed and then I’ll leave…cuz I can’t go in my pajamas. And she goes, oh those are pajamas?! I never would have known. Bless that sweet woman. LOL cold jeans are the worst! Does Old Navy still make those fleece lined ones? Because those were pure magic. You felt like you had cozy sweatpants on but they looked like regular denim. 🤔
I pretty much wear the same handful of tops and bottoms during the summer months as well. I can't deal with white but I definitely need to get some light-coloured t-shirts before next summer. I'm just so pale that they don't look great on me... I'll have to try something like your soft green shirt. I'll be 50 by the time next summer rolls around so anything I can do to prevent overheating and survive perimenopause takes precedence over style!
I get what you're saying with the heat.. though it's me overheating while carrying a small human on a hot day. 😅 So I had to make a change this year with what I was wearing. I can't handle wearing only dark colors in the sun anymore. I get too cranky. I'd rather be comfortable and put a little extra effort in on laundry day. Also eliminating polyester from my summer wardrobe made a big difference. The sun feels extra hot when you're wearing a black shirt made of plastic. 🥵
@@SimplifyingTheSatherns Absolutely... no synthetics is also key! You are way ahead of the game in curating your wardrobe and should only need some minor tweaks going forward. I've only recently come to these conclusions as part of my decluttering journey.
