Hi Tash, yes Donald Sutherland is Canadian as well his son Kiefer. It gets even better, we owe our health care system to Kiefer’s maternal grandfather, Tommy Douglas. He was premier of the province of Saskatchewan. He brought health care to his province, leading the way for universal health care for all of Canada.

I'm a bit of a weepy sort (I cried when Lassie came home) but I was a right snotty mess during the women's figure skating competition. Joannie Rochette was Canada's best hope to medal. Her mother passed away from a heart attack two days before her skate. She went on to win the bronze in an extremely emotional program but I'll tell you, she was pure gold in that moment. She's a physician now.

You should watch the movie "Cool Runnings" it's about the Jamaican Bobsled team that entered the 1988 Olympics which were held in Calgary, Alberta. It's a funny movie but based on real events. John Candy (one of the funniest Canadian's ever) stars in it. There were actually a couple of really interesting things about those Olympics, another story about those Olympics was a British guy dubbed Eddie the Eagle (I forget his last name) who was a ski jumper, he was last place by a country mile but he had so much spirit and heart you had to root for him.
The 2010 Olympics were a dark time for me though, I've been a lifelong hockey fan but I never saw the gold medal game for hockey that year because my father died the day before and really didn't feel like celebrating. Great moment for Canada but hard to celebrate when something like that happens.

I don't know if you noticed, but there was one glitch during the opening ceremonies: one of the pillars of the Olympic cauldron didn't rise with the other three. So, one of the torch bearers (speedskater Catriona Le May Doan) stood rather awkwardly with her torch raised while the others lit the cauldron (she's the one standing alone on the left). The organizers took their fair share of ribbing from the international media. However, in typical Canadian fashion, the organizers turned around and made it into a self-deprecating joke at the start of the closing ceremonies when a clown in construction gear finally raised the fourth pillar in the stadium.

Morning Tash: This is from Wikipedia "The Olympic flag is carried into BC Place stadium during the Opening Ceremony of the XXI Olympic Winter Games, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Feb. 12, 2010. Left to right, Betty Fox, mother of the late cancer activist Terry Fox; Jacques Villeneuve, the only Canadian race car driver to win both the Indianapolis 500 and Formula 1 world championship; four-time Grammy Award winning singer Anne Murray; Bobby Orr, National Hockey League legendary defenceman; Emmy-award winning actor Donald Sutherland; Barbara Ann Scott-King, 1948 Olympic figure skating gold medalist; Meritorious Service Cross recipient retired Canadian Lt. Gen. Romeo Dallaire, and Canadian astronaut Julie Payette are carrying the flag." Donald Sutherland was born in New Brunswick, his son Keifer was born in England. Keifer's Mother was Shirley Douglas who was the daughter of Tommy Douglas. Tommy Douglas was a Canadian Politician from Saskatchewan who helped bring Universal Health Care to Canada and is considered one of the greatest Canadians ever. Sadly, I was not at the the 2010 Olympics but one of my cousins and one of my friends were. My cousin said Vancouver was absolutely electric with excitement. The city had zip lining between the sky scrapers for people. If someone had to leave to go to the bathroom, people in line kept their spot for them. (That's how we Canucks roll). My friend was a volunteer and when he wasn't working at his day job or volunteering, the volunteers were given tickets to sports venues (to put bums in seats). Across the country, during the Canada - US Men's Hockey Game, hockey rinks opened up and showed the game on their big screens. In Winnipeg, our arena (about 18,000 capacity) charged $5.00 a person and the rink was full. One Air Canada airplane departure was delayed because the passengers wouldn't board. The passengers were watching the hockey game. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/passengers-held-up-flight-to-watch-hockey-1.969664

I'm not a fan of the Olympics - or curling, but for me, the best spirit of the Olympics was the year that Sandra Schmirler and her team went to the Olympics. While most competitors at the Olympics are totally focused on the sport, Shmirler and her team had their husbands at every game, with the kids in tow, this was at a time when many commentators were amazed just by the dads looking after the kids, but as soon as every game finished, the team would make their way to the stands and their families. I don't think athletes had ever been seen with their kids either, but the team members would regularly do interviews with their kids in their laps. It was a breath of fresh air to see a group of "down home" housewives who just treated the sport as part of their life along with their families. Sadly Sandra died very young at 36, leaving a two yer old daughter, who I think plays today.ruclips.net/video/Bm1uVaWj_dY/видео.html

All the Olympic Opening Ceremonies are cool, but this isn't why people have been recommending you do some reactions to the 2010 games. The special things happened during the games - after this - in the competitions but mostly amongst the Canadian public. I hope you get to those parts. The Opening Ceremonies actually had some big problems, most importantly, a Georgian luge athlete had been killed in a training run that morning and there was a huge malfunction with the raising of the Olympic cauldron. The opening wasn't a particular highlight of those games in comparison to what was to come.
Also, this isn't a great video. It missed a lot of the cool parts and didn't point out a lot of things you'd find interesting - such as when Rick Hanson carried the torch into BC Place (the stadium) and that Terry Fox's mother was one of those people carrying the Olympic flag. The others were Donald Sutherland (you were right!), Barbara Ann Scott (won the figure skating gold medal in 1948), Gen. Romeo Dallaire (UN commander in Rwanda during the genocide), Anne Murray (singer) Jacques Villeneuve (race car driver), Bobby Orr (hockey player), and Julie Payette (astronaut and later to become Governor General of Canada).
The opening ceremonies were a great show but that's not the special part.

@@aussietashreacts Please don't be sorry! You can't know what the clip will be before you react to it! You're great and your reaction here was great and I enjoyed it. It's just that there was something special about what happened in Canada during those games and this video missed that. I've seen how many videos have been recommended to you - and know you can't do them all - but, if you'll trust me, this one is a good summary. It wasn't just about the Olympics or the Golden Goal. ruclips.net/video/kz8tzP3oeDg/видео.html

Yes... the olympic stadium they built was know as the Big O, but everyone referred to it as The Big Owe. 😂 And yeah... took almost 40 years to pay off.
There was no way that Montreal, or Quebec could pay that off, that the so the federal government, started the Olympic Lottery, selling tickets for $10 each, with a one million dollar prize for every draw. (when $1 million was really worth something) Before that, there were no lotteries in Canada, and now, every province has a lottery. (but you still have to answer a skill testing question, because that makes it a contest, and not a game of chance 😂)

@@rockygonnadz74 Ah...yes. I was doing gymnastics myself, and had a keen interest. She was cute, (I was 16 then) and she well deserved that first perfect score. She had a very slight wobble at the end of her routine, but stuck it very well, and the judges really made the right decision.
There have been a few perfect scores since, but those gymnasts made mistakes, and imho, didn't deserve the full marks. (9.95 maybe)
I believe she ended up moving to the USA, and taught gymnastics there. Lovely lady.
