    Editor's Note: My edits were all made to keep the video on one, central topic by editing together relevant commentary from many parts of Hasan's streams to create a storyline that is still followable by the viewer. I also edited in commentary of my own in places, in addition to relevant external information that improves the viewing experience. A lot of edits were made for comedy purposes, or to enhance the comedic timing of certain beats, but never to misrepresent Hasan's point of view.

    I remember once seeing this PSA years ago where 6 kids are in school & during lunch 1 of them has no food so a kid that brought their lunch gave the boy some chips. The PSA was about how roughly 1 in 6 kids in The U.S. face poverty in that they go hungry & for many lunch at school may be the only meal they get a day. So, this is why it's so important for programs like SNAP to remain in place to ensure we prevent actual living children from going hungry in The U.S.

    • @Noooiiiissseee
      @Noooiiiissseee 11 месяцев назад

      Yeah but then again, conservatives think that that 1 kid should be taken away from their parents until they learn to pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

    • @gilbertoflores7397
      @gilbertoflores7397 11 месяцев назад +44

      The most messed up thing is that tax dollars already pay a lot for the kid to go to a public school, why be assholes and not cover the few extra dollars for them to have a free lunch. As tax payers, paying a few extra 20-30 dollars a year to make sure students can eat at school is worth it. How would people expect a kid to learn when he's hungry during class. The government cares for high test scores, give the kids lunch and breakfast, they'll perform better.

    Being obsessed with "life isn't fair" is a full time job. It takes a lot of effort to ignore the fact that we could easily give people everything they need to live for free. Talking the essentials here. Food. Medicine. Housing. Free. Is that socialism? Yes. I'd wager socializing those things would actually boost capitalism. Since ya know... instead of struggling all the time. People could now afford to spend on everything else.

      I think that’s what I’ve been thinking as of lately, every resource is essential “free” it’s literally all here on earth, regardless if we pay for it or not, they are still doing the work to get those resources, to built those house to distribute all the food. This government/world is a hell hole that just want to profit of every single person here.
      Sorry if doesn’t make sense, i can’t seem to explain my thoughts into words lol. But I agree with you, everyone can literally live for free, have food for free as well.

    what was SO radicalizing for me was being diagnosed with a chronic illness that *requires* a long term biologic. each dose would have cost thousands of dollars, and thank god I had health insurance otherwise I don’t know what I would have done. after my dad lost his job I was really worried about whether our next health insurance would cover my meds. luckily everything is taken care of and I’m doing well, but thinking about how there are people out there like me who may not have had the money to ever be diagnosed, or if they had to afford treatment makes me feel sick bc I have experienced unimaginable amounts of pain and I’m so lucky that I have the resources to lessen it. the worry that comes with being faced with a future where I couldn’t afford my medicine (a future that is still very real) was what made me believe all medications and healthcare should be 100% free to everyone, no questions asked. people should be able to just walk into the doctor and be treated. being diagnosed with a long term condition that requires expensive medications (and expensive doctor visits and expensive hospital visits) should not feel like a death sentence.

      It’s crazy because this actually happened to me.. i’m not gonna get into my diagnosissssss, But I have chronic pain due to all of the illnesses that I have. I had to quit my job and go on disability doing so I lost my insurance therefore I could not go to the doctor and get the medication’s the doctors that where prescribing me the meds nor get the meds that were working for me. It has been a long road it is now nine years since that has happened and I have still not found the same meds that actually gave me pain relief that I was having at that time. But I am very glad that you were lucky in the situation❤ Believe me I was in that situation constantly worrying that I wouldn’t be able to get the medication is that I needed😢 it is not right that this happens to people!! My heart goes out to you and hope that you are doing well ❤

    We need Medicare-For-All in The United States! What's more "pro-life" then ensuring everyone living here has guaranteed affordable healthcare regardless of their job? If we all had access to healthcare, we would have the "freedom" to live long lives without having to worry about medical bankruptcies. Taxes will go up, but overall medical bills will go down. If some of us need additional healthcare, then we have the "choice" to purchase private insurance. If every other developed country (Canada, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Switzerland, Israel, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, & New Zealand) can implement this system & save money, then why can't The United States do the same to help "Make America Great Again" for everyone when it comes to healthcare? & If people in The United States die from lacking access to affordable health insurance then we are failing our country's promise of defending "life, liberty, & the pursuit of happiness" for its citizens as well as "promoting the general welfare" of everyone living here.

    • @Empolo18
      @Empolo18 11 месяцев назад

      Answer: "Pro-life" is only a talking point because of the potential of the unborn human, not the actual life itself. An unborn child can keep the gears turning in the industrial capitalist cogs. Older and retired people are akin to broken cogs. They're replaceable. Same with dead soldiers and why we don't have a mandatory draft. Unborn babies become working class citizens, and fodder soldiers for war. Economically, big Pharma can squeeze more money out of citizens who (actually have a heart) care about the elderly because they don't want loved ones to pass on. Anyone can have a comfortable life in USA, but it ain't free. Citizens are treated like a commodity while not directly or explicitly saying so.

    I mean, as someone who works in industrial as a medicinal chemist, id argue that the heart of the issue with pharma companies, as always, stems from the upper management (CEO, CFO, etc.) and their work with lobbyists. All of those i work with directly contribute to the screening, sybthesis, and optimization of potential drug candidates and accompany the tracking of that compound from synthesis through clinical trials. And unfortunately even in the academic setting, while the research being done there is incredible (i spent 3.5 years in a chemistry graduate program working on three different projects that were all government funded), many of the discoveries made as it pertains to specific compounds or natural products are more often than not dome through collaborations with industry and anything developed by anyone at a university is proprietary information that belongs to the university itself so if anything ever comes out of it it always goes back to the scjools but no guarantee that money will be put back into research (ask any PI/research group leader and theyll tell you like 60% of their time is spent applying for grabts for funding).

So Shapiro says "no one would EVER do anything (like medical research) without a payout", but then says they supply drugs to other countries at below-profit prices. Why would they ever sell in countries that make zero profit, unless... 1) they do things without a payout, which violates his first argument, or 2) they do make profit. So it violates his second point.

    Actually that's not the most common reason. Often big pharma makes backroom deals with smaller ones so that they won't make generic version in exchange for a slice of the profit for the price gauged ones. This is called pay-for-delay. It is illegal in the EU, recently there was a major push to allow it but it was struck down.

    Price gouging of pharmaceutical drugs already makes no sense to me; if you as a company charge medications so much that many potential customers can't afford them, then how are you going to make money off those medications in the long-term with only the wealthy top percentage of the population being able to afford them? Personally, I feel the federal government needs to have some form of price control to ensure that we don't pay an absurd amount for prescriptions compared to other developed countries. If a bottle of pills in say Germany costs $6.00, that same bottle of pills shouldn't cost more then 50% extra here in the U.S., which would be $9.00 in this case. I'm not saying pharmaceutical companies don't deserve to make profit for their research & development, but they shouldn't be able to charge insane prices for their life saving products that most uninsured Americans can't afford.

    • @bijubymari
      @bijubymari 11 месяцев назад

      Realistically they're charging that amount to insurance companies or Medicare/Medicaid and the company pays them and you basically pay the insurance company. We're the only people losing and left feeling cheated. Many other countries as we know have socialized healthcare to at least some functional extent and that makes it harder for these companies to rip people off. There's a steroid ointment I need for eczema that costs me $20 in the US but I could buy 3 of the same sized bottle over the counter in Brazil with that. It's incredibly fucked

    I also find it pretty crazy that you can extent patents like that in the first place. For most products if you come up with a new format you can take out a new patents but it won't extent the original patent. So if they come up with a pill that used to be taken anally and can take it orally the anal pill patent still expires at the usual time.

    And to further the point that hasan is making regarding medical innovation United States, part of the reason that were so behind is that the research the United States being federally funded in the majority of places means that if something is he legal in the United States we're not allowed to conduct active research on it. And by that I mean, we can't explore further how we can implement and utilize cannabis for the treatment of different illnesses despite the fact that it sounded extremely effective against severe kinds of epilepsy even and children, treatment for anxiety, facilitating with nausea during cancer treatments, and even helping with pain relief. But because it's federally illegal still universities and research institutions can't do any further investigation or researcher development on it. Many other countries don't have this type of limitation. I'm not quite sure what their limitations are but I do know that's the reason why they can be so innovative it's partially a result of the restrictions regarding research in that specified country.

    Boofing (rectal use) of some things actually has a huge effect on bioavailability. For example. Mdma absorbs 2x as much rectally so you’re essentially taking two doses from one. Bioavailability is very important. You mention OxyContin, one reason it was so prolific is that most people don’t wanna “inject hard drugs” so with oxy 90% is absorbed orally. Morphine? 30%. That’s why people would always IV opioids. But the development of oral and transdermal opioids makes it much easier to get addicted.

You will never convince an investor to give you money when you say im researching something comepletely new i need tons of money to determine if it will work and btw it could possibly be not functional AT ALL. Problem is we need research and development to innovate and move society forward. Its just not possible to do cutting edge research in the private sector.

      Contrary to what free market zealots would have us believe, the government, not profit-seeking capitalists, has been the foremost risk-taker and driver of innovation and scientific/technological advance in the US in the past 80 years.
      Literally every major component of the iPhone--the internet, cellular, SIRI, GPS, and hand-held tech--was brought into existence by the federal government or with considerable support from it. Likewise, the Google algorithm was developed with government-supported research and development.
      In the pharmaceutical industry, venture capitalists are much more likely to invest in launching IPO's and stock buy backs and making minor modifications to already-existing patents than in research that would drive new breakthrough therapies. They wait until government-funded research has developed new treatments, and once it has, then step in to commercialize them. Many of the most lucrative drugs put on the market each year are developed by the federal government. Approximately 75% of molecular entities patented annually by the pharmaceutical industry are developed in government-funded labs.
      Indeed, biotech wouldn't exist without government subsidies and support and nanotech is almost entirely a creation of the government.

How is it not, by literal definition, redistributing wealth from the community and giving it to some parts within the community?

      Actually big pharma is already doing that. Drugs in Africa usually cost several times more than in Europe because those countries are not strong enough to bargain and are usually punished if they try. This caused a massive amount of anger when it came to light South-Africans have to pay 3,3 times as much for the covid vaccine as Norwegians despite Norwegians obviously being far richer. South-Africa has the capacity to make the drug itself if they were granted the patent but it was refused and caused a massive stir in the UN that went on for months as thousands of people were dying every day.

    Things being cheaper in bulk still doesnt make sense, I thought capitalists treat supply and demand like it's an external law of physics, yet they break that with buying bulk for cheaper. Clearly they'll say its because it costs more to individually wrap things and so that cost is reflected in the price, but a lot of times that is arbitrary and couldnt possible be enough of a cost to operate this way (i.e., fast food deals, etc). Little do they know, they still admit that supply and demand/market mechanisms were never in charge of price controls capitulating to this explanation lol
