    So, the sign near the beginning that says, "Mom, I am a rich man" is actually a famous quote from Cher, who tells the story of when she was younger her mom kept saying she needed to settle down and marry a rich man, and Cher replied, "Mom, I AM a rich man!" Great inside trivia there

      @@SuperJersh I'm pretty sure if you react to her songs from the Reputation era like "Look What You Made Me Do" or "...Ready For It?" or songs from her album 1989 "Blank Space". "Wildest Dreams", "Bad Blood" or "Out Of The Woods", it will attract more audience, as those are generally (only some of) her biggest songs.

    Her newly found voice in politics is definitely new, and she kinda goes into her decision to break her silence on politics in her new documentary on Netflix, Miss Americana. If you’re curious, you should give it a watch! Also, these are her most political songs. She, in my opinion, is the best current pop songwriter around these days, so if you like meaning lyrics and songs that have substance, you should give some of her other work a listen!

      @@smileyfacesheens123 i mean, it IS by dint of the fact that queer rights are being actively litigated, and were being litigated at the time she released this song. But especially for Taylor, who spent years trying actively to not say anything that could be read as political, explicitly supporting the queer community against haters, and explicitly bringing up the double standards that exist under patriarchy, this 100% was political.

  • @ljacal
    @ljacal 4 года назад +99

    She has never been political until recently. You should react to Miss Americana on Netflix, her documentary. “A nice girl never puts her opinions on people. She waves and says thank you and became what they wanted me to be” something like that is what she says. She basically was ready to break out of her shell and what society wanted her to be. Her past albums are about relationships and breakups but the media called her a slut for having so many boyfriends, that’s where “the man” comes in.

    • @joroc
      @joroc 4 года назад +1

      "thr man" is a reference to Madona

    • @Starbuck-dr7yl
      @Starbuck-dr7yl 4 года назад +2

      That is definitely not where the MAN comes in. The only way they are related is that she was slut-shamed for enjoying her 20’s like a normal 20-yr old, but men aren’t shamed for the same behavior. But other than that, the song had nothing to do with her past boyfriends. Those days mostly ended in 2014. Since then, and 3 albums later, equaling 51 songs..... I can only think of 2 songs that MIGHT be about an ex boyfriend.

    The funny thing about children's custody being given to mothers is that even though women were receiving special treatment, it still came from a place of gender inequality and sexism towards mostly women. Because people still believe women should be the only responsible beings in taking care of offsprings lol, even if she isn't that much better than the father, surely she has maternal instincts that make her better, right? But it's good that is changing, definitely an issue to be discussed for sure.
    About Taylor Swift, all songs before the Lover era were non political. But you somehow started with the two songs were she decided to say a few words about important things. lol I recommend "all too well".

    • @TheNraveles
      @TheNraveles 4 года назад +2

      thats still just kinda saying "oh its still just a womens issue" when overall, its not just that, but because men are never seen as caregivers. My mom works at a daycare and i used to go help. All the kids loved me and so did the parents, except for one pair of mom and dad who said "Why is a man working here, i dont want him around my children" and i was forced to stop helping, even though the staff, kids, and parents did actually like me being there. Apparently they said to the boss about the rate of male sex offenders with children and all that and they werent comfortable with a guy helping out there, but if it was the teachers daughter they wouldve been okay.

    • @stillfangirlingtoday1468
      @stillfangirlingtoday1468 4 года назад +10

      @@TheNraveles And why do you think that is? Because women were given the job to stay at home and take care of children and men got the expectation to go out and do some manly work to provide. And now both genders have to live with the sexism that men themselves created for centuries.
      Sorry that happened to you, but it doesn't change what I said. Maybe you should invest in going around and educating people that men can clean, cook and take care of children just as well as any women, so maybe after two centuries we will have a more balanced society.

      It’s not just sexism. Try to see it both ways. A lot of sexism still happens to women, but this sexism is still being held by both women and men.
      I wouldn’t say try to appeal to everyone, since there are people who generally think that women today have more rights than men, but likewise, you also have to be accepting of men’s problems as well. Otherwise we get nowhere as a society

    In a lot of ways, this song and this video were her political "coming out" - for a very long time, she studiously avoided taking any public political stances, including refusing to endorse any candidate in 2016. But at a certain point, I think she started to realize that staying completely neutral wasn't enough, and so decided to take a big stance.

    About what you said with child custody, nowadays there is no reason for it to be biased toward one gender or another, but in the past, the system may have been biased toward the mother because the mother would frequently do all of the child care and father's did nothing. I know it wasn't that way with every father, but it was common. So if the child went with the father, they might not have been cared for properly. Not that they couldn't have learned, but generally they made no effort to.

    • @SuperJersh

      I agree it’s good that things are more balanced for both parents of any gender getting more and more balanced parental time, I would say that it’s an assumption that dad’s didn’t do a good job because it started out in favor of mom so who’s to say what would have happened if it had been 50/50 from the start when those laws were being made but thankfully progress has shown that it’s much better for everyone especially the child when both parents are healthy and involved, definitely not stuff id think I’d be talking about when I started reacting to Taylor Swift but that’s part of the fun lol, thx for watching! :)

    She is not a political activist who sings, but lately she has gotten into making a voice for herself. Standing up for basic civil rights. A lot of her fans are gay and she felt hypocritical for not speaking out in support of them. This is discussed in her documentary Miss Americana. It is on Netflix. To learn a bit more, it is well worth the view of it. It’s actually very very good and opened Sundance film festival. I wouldn’t call her an activist but lately she has made her political views known and she is speaking out for what she thinks is right.

    She really is not a political artist, she turned 30 in December so has grown through her music and is starting to have ‘adult conversations’ in her songs. Her dad actually impressed upon her at an early age that as a woman in the music biz, she should stay away from politics if she wanted to be successful and she has for a time but now she’s so global and has amassed incredible experience, she is so intelligent and that reflects in her songwriting. Her roots are in country which is why her lyrics are always so descriptive because as you’ll know, country songs are written as a story so that the listener doesn’t really have to think about any message there might be in a song. I feel you need to get to know Tay a little better and I really am surprised that being on her 7th studio album and being a recording artist sing she was a teenager that you don’t really know about her or have heard any of her back catalogue. She’s the Artist of the Decade and when you ask “why doesn’t she write about getting married and being in love”, I had to LOL 😂 because that’s what all her songs are about, her life, her loves, her hates, it’s all in there

    It's funny how he finds Taylor to be more political than Lady Gaga lol. Taylor used to no be political AT ALL until recently. Whereas Lady Gaga has been political from the very beginning.

  • @Kaice88

    Yeah no. Most of her music is all about her own experiences with love (mostly), friendships, & family, etc. she hasn’t been very verbal about her opinions on political or social activism issues until the last 2 or 3 years and she said herself that the reason she made this song in particular was because she started hearing that her lgbtq+ fans didn’t feel like she was using her celebrity to be socially active and an ally for them so once she heard that she made this song to kind of say she is an ally and loves her fans of the lgbt+ community. Also I love your surprise when you saw the sign Adam and Eve and realized what the MV was about.

    I absolutely love this song and the video. My only complaint would be I wish that she had not portrayed all of the homophobes as a stereotypical "hick". The sad truth is homophobes are just as diverse as the rest of the country. But I was really glad she came out and used her platform to make a statement and the fact that the song is so awesome is a huge bonus.

    The political side is very recent and came from a lot of backlash from not being political and staying silent on a lot of things. I think mainly because she came from country music and has a large conservative fan base. Regardless, I still like that she’s listening to what people want to see from her. I just think it’s a bit funny/sad that people got mad because she stayed silent and now they get mad that she is more political.
    I’ve always been pretty neutral on her but I love how she addresses the vitriol in this song/video.

  • @robertthompson7242
    @robertthompson7242 4 года назад

    You put this up several months ago, so I will guess you have already learned more about her. Her discography is: 2006, Taylor Swift; 2008, Fearless; 2010 Speak Now; 2012 Red; 2014 1989 (album); 2017 reputation; 2019 Lover; 2020 Folklore. She moved to Nashville at 14, with an artist-in-development contract as a songwriter. She had to homeschool after 16; she was touring. Her 2006 album was written by the 9th grade; songs on it range from when she was 12 to 15. Every album is based on what she writes since the last album.
    She got a lot of crap about dating: she has been the cover model for a large number of magazines (promoting her albums). She has dated prominent (and handsome) men from Joe Jonas and Taylor Lautner, to John Mayer and Calvin Harris. They were mostly NOT good choices for her. She has been with British actor Joe Alwyn for a full four years now; it seems permanent.
    Her record sales have always beaten the averages; Red, 1989, reputation, Lover, and Folklore are all still on the Billboard top 200 list. Speak Now, Red, 1989 and Reputation all sold a million copies the first week; Lover and Folklore did very well, also. She has won a huge number of awards (10? Grammy, 29 AMA, a lot of CMA/CMT awards, even the Songwriter of the Year (5 years straight) for the Nashville Songwriters Association. She has done a little acting, but isn't really focused on it. She has several soundtracks not on the albums, and has collaborated with several artists over the years.
    She has had some very public spats with several artists over the years; the media played them out to be worse than they actually were. Katy Perry was one; it is why she is in this video. She donates quietly to many charities: food banks, homeless shelters, women's assistance groups, and the Tennessee chapter of GLAAD. She donates more publicly to disaster relief (tornadoes in Tennessee this spring, Nashville floods in 2010, various hurricane relief funds) and currently is asking support for the WHO food banks, and local Covid-19 relief projects.
    She got "political" after she was groped by a radio station host; she won a sexual assault case in Denver after he sued her for defamation. She endorsed candidates in 2018 for the first time. She has also supported Kesha and helped pay her legal bills, after Kesha alleged sexual assault against her label. She has actually been speaking out (in her music) against trolls since her 3d record (Mean, Shake It Off, Look What You Made Me Do also share the theme of a maliciously false media narrative with YNTCD). She has always been something of a developing feminist; but she took a lot of heat for not using her influence to speak out publicly on things (most of the critics didn't seem to get that she was only 22, that she homeschooled and never went to college, or that she is fundamentally an anxious person who worries about everything). She didn't think she had a lot to contribute when she was that young, and her record label actively tried to suppress any controversy that might alienate her audience. The label also did NOT support her moving into pop (until Red sold a million copies in the first few days).
    Musically, she has always been experimental. There is punk percussion on her first album ( a lot of her early songs ended up in the Pop Goes Punk series, as different artists covered the songs). She also has a lot of input into the mix and the sound; she wants things to sound the way she hears it in her head, not the plastic way the label might want it.

    Just about the parent’s custody thing, it was indeed sexist but not because it “favored” the mom. It was quite the opposite. It was because the child was seen as the mom’s responsibility and not the father’s. Because it came from the idea that the woman who takes care of the house and the kids, and the men are supposed to give the money. But we all know it was only because that was a excuse to most men to not take part in the child’s life. It is sexist but it goes so far deeper than being in “favor” of the mom. It comes from the reality that when women get pregnant, society only judges her and the dad can disappear but she has to carry The Whole responsibility for a two action.
