Well he's had 98,000+ views so he must be doing something right. I just can't believe the number of comments from people who clearly don't see that it's a spoof. Well done Jeff for fooling them and making me laugh.
as an uillean pipe player of many years i will just say that a strong sense of humor will probably be your most useful tool when traveling through this strange world
Frederick Stafford I have always wanted to play these pipes. I am absolutely in love with them. Yet everytime I am confronted with how theyre actually played, I become overwhelmed, break out in sweats and experience horrible IBS.
I remember watching this back in 2013 and peeling with laughter, only to find that nobody in the comments had any sense of humour and blindly insisted on correcting his pronunciation. Several years have since passed and, low and behold, nothing has changed. It's a joke, guys. Come on.
Scroll down and see my response of about 6 months ago... some of us get it. I just came back to this for a good laugh after my first shot at playing the pipes. I was so discouraged, I needed to come back to this to give me back my perspective.
flip inheck words have dialects, names do not. It is in fact pronounced "Illan" as in Gillan w/o the G. Names are (should be) always pronounced the way they should be pronounced (ie, as the people HOLDING the name say it). Illan. Not Yoolean. If you look up vids of Irish people saying it, you'll see this is true. But hey, prove me wrong! I'll accept it if I am wrong.
flip inheck Well, then apparently I'm wrong. But this guy gives Illan as the main one and Illian as an alt. www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=uilleann Another vid I found pronouncing it. How to Say or Pronounce Uilleann Pipes But I think it may be you and some others are just saying it phonetically (how it's spelt). Rock on.
Anywhere I've been I've heard uilleann (being the irish for elbow) pronounced as illun, so I can attest that it's pronounced illun in munster, leinster and connaught gaelic, and illun/ullun in ulster gaelic.
platinum9654 I think for me, I'm going with the consensus of people where the pipes came from and it sounds like the consensus is "Illan". So, that's going to be my ponunciation.
TruthSurge I was agreeing with you, illun and illan are basically the same thing, I was just saying that it is definitely not yoolean, oolean, or any other variation with a pronounced u.
I very nearly fell out of my chair laughing when you started singing along... This here is a brilliantly-crafted bit of humor, and I hope you've improved a bit with practice since your first day. :)
OMG, I was just starting to look for instructional videos on the uillean pipes because of the lovely, haunting sound. Stumbled on this, and was slightly confused by the "Comedy" category. By the time he had started playing for a minute or so, I was crying with laughter, literally. Well done! - But I don't think I'll be trying to learn anytime soon!
This is SO funny! "B-Lou Reed" - love it. Jeff, you should have your own TV show! Laughing aside, the clip did make me want to try to play the instrument!
I do have much respect for the Uilleann Pipe, this is a wonderful instrument that I love and it reached my heart and soul when first hearing it ... but I'm sorry ... This is just hilarious, when feeling low I watch this and it really makes me laugh :) I must confess that I was in tears too :)))
HILARIOUS!!! hahaha... this would be me if I tackled this octopus for the first time... and I'm a bagpiper!! It's a whole different technique. Well done Jeff for shooting off the cuff!
Absolutely classic! I have a set of Scottish pipes and although I am not much better now I can clearly remember that stage of learning. Very bold to record and post it. Be warned potential bagpipers. There instruments are very difficult to get started on. However if you persevere they are extremely rewarding. Thanks for the video Jeff, you made me smile.
hahahahaha one of the funniest things iv seen on you tube, and i watch alot of youtube. That was great! And u have made me second guess rushing out and buying a set ;)
Union bagpipes. The name "uilleann pipes" was invented by Henry Grattan Flood c. 1912, at a time when the word "Union" had uneasy political connotations.
I used to try the pipes. I once went to pipe legend dan dowd to get my bellows fixed and I said to him " there`s something wrong with the bellows". dan said there`s nothing wrong with the bellows...it`s you!
Why don't people take personal responsibility. You should have used the toilet before viewing the vid ! Its funny how the human body excretes liquids ! When he started to "play" tears would NOT stop rolling down my cheeks. So I thought I would conduct a experiment ; to see how many times I could replay the part where he starts playing. I made it to seven. Had to stop. I was soaked in tears, sweating profusely, muscles aching, feeling dizzy. and the missus thought I'd lost it ! Happy days !
Now, understand just how correct "oolliann" is for pronunciation. Yes. Correct. Because... When anyone is successful in playing one of these convoluted, entangling and admittedly troublesome instruments, the listener will exclaim, "Oooo!" Hence the name.
Lmao. This man just said, "if Your a heroine addict, you can uh...you know...uhm..." I'm done with youtube for today. You have a like and sub from me, my friend
This was just so funny. Specially the way he keeps stressing the deliberate mis-pronunciation, causing a comment storm! Its a joke! How can anyone have taken this seriously? Like how he says if you are a Heroin addict you can save a bit of time with the strap, or because they are strapped to you, it makes them harder to rob, but then if your kidnapped with them on etc... plus there is a bit of truth in it, we do all sound like that in the beginning - and probably always will if you get these dirt cheap Asian pipes... I've tried and failed to get pipes like these going for lads, twice. Only ever buy pipes from a reputable maker, who is not afraid to stamp his name into the chanter, if you don't you will stay like Jeff here! ;) Thanks for the laugh!
Well he's had 98,000+ views so he must be doing something right. I just can't believe the number of comments from people who clearly don't see that it's a spoof. Well done Jeff for fooling them and making me laugh.
i came here to correct him and left with a much better sense :X

Shame its not funny
Skyfinity .... Agree..... Its really only a joke..... 😃

Man, I'm way too stoned for this
Whoa ! Don't knock it man. After watching this, I found I could play the recorder !!!!! ; )
Happy days.
The uilleann pipes in the instrumental version of My Heart Will Go On are nothing short of amazing. So beautiful!
Isn't it pronounced "illan" instead of "oolian"? I'd assume the first thing to get right is the damn name of the instrument. :)
flip inheck words have dialects, names do not. It is in fact pronounced "Illan" as in Gillan w/o the G. Names are (should be) always pronounced the way they should be pronounced (ie, as the people HOLDING the name say it).

Sounds like the death rattle of the last haggis I shot, legally of course.
I love it. Laughing the whole way through... bravo sir, bravo!!! 🤣😂😁👍
Brilliant! Just brilliant. As soon as you said Oohlian I was hooked. I haven't laughed so hard in ages. Thank you for your comic genius xx
I very nearly fell out of my chair laughing when you started singing along... This here is a brilliantly-crafted bit of humor, and I hope you've improved a bit with practice since your first day. :)
You are a super cool cat with such a kooky sense of humor !LOVE IT ! Thanks for 5:18 minutes of joy and laughter !
So hillarious made tears run down my face. A natural comedian and he can play instruments very well according to his other videos.
Best instructional video, period.
The Lou Reed joke... I laughed waay too hard, love this!
THIS was the greatest video on RUclips I have seen in a very long time!!!! THANK you for laugh!
That right there was one of the funniest things I've ever seen!
OMG, I was just starting to look for instructional videos on the uillean pipes because of the lovely, haunting sound. Stumbled on this, and was slightly confused by the "Comedy" category. I bet the neighbours thought that a duck was locked in mortal combat with a moose! Great stuff (^-^)
+UnderSeaShadow i thought it was a donkey being slowly slaughtered...
This is SO funny! "B-Lou Reed" - love it. Jeff, you should have your own TV show! Laughing aside, the clip did make me want to try to play the instrument!
I wish my Grand father was as funny as you are in this video when he tough me to play when I was a young child.
Absolute classic. Funniest thing I’ve seen in ages. Well done.

I thought this video was serious until I started hearing him play LOL.
HILARIOUS!!! hahaha... this would be me if I tackled this octopus for the first time... and I'm a bagpiper!! It's a whole different technique. Well done Jeff for shooting off the cuff!
The drones sound like farts! XD
That was hilarious, thank you. I wish you well on your piping.
only another 20 years 11months 6 days to go keep up the good work and thanks for the laugh that was really funny
Please post the tabs of what you are playing. I try to nail it down but can't....and I love the tune. Well done!
You made my day!!! 😀
I got a practice set of Uilleann bagpipes for my 21st birthday, it took me a whole month to play a song.
I wondered if he ever got around to playing them so I fast forwarded to the 4:00 minute mark... brilliant :D
Absolutely classic! I have a set of Scottish pipes and although I am not much better now I can clearly remember that stage of learning. Very bold to record and post it. Be warned potential bagpipers. Something tells me he is quite experienced with pipes, albeit a different kind..
I love this guy, and his Lou Reed... :-D
Any chance you'd give us a tune on the old squeezes box that is sitting on the piano,or a bit of Scruggs on the five string???????
They're simply pronounced as "illen pipes"
My pet snake went fucking mental listening to this man..
I always die when he puts on the drones XD. 4:36 Dat face tho.
hahahahaha one of the funniest things iv seen on you tube, and i watch alot of youtube. That was great! And u have made me second guess rushing out and buying a set ;)
I love you, internet. Never leave me.
3:50: Oh rescue the poor cat!
Jeff you are my hero, for the rest of my life
Hahaha keep practicing Jeff! You will get it in about 21 years mate!
Sounds like a balloon deflating
We need more people likes this.real English. Henry Vlll would have been so proud.
This video illustrates why I play a harp and not the uilleann (ooolyan) bagpipes :-D Thank you for this fine post. You made my day.
This never gets old.oh my goodness >:D
Lou reed. Lol, your such a dad. Love it!
SQEEEEEEEEREERRRRRRREKRKKKKKKKKKK that's what it sounded like 🤣🤣💀
I like the humor! 😂👍😎
As an Irish person this was rather entertaining. What a fool. :D maybe he knows that he is saying uilleann completely wrong. But yes, awesome!!!
I think Jeff nailed it. Text book.
If he wasn't Australian I would think he was joking.
Union bagpipes. The name "uilleann pipes" was invented by Henry Grattan Flood c. 1912, at a time when the word "Union" had uneasy political connotations.
The pipes won, two falls to a submission.
Your last comment sums the clip up nicely..
The way you go at it, count on more like 63 years mastering the [Ill'n] pipes
Funny guy, Jeff! Love your videos. :)
I used to try the pipes. I once went to pipe legend dan dowd to get my bellows fixed and I said to him " there`s something wrong with the bellows". dan said there`s nothing wrong with the bellows...it`s you!
Not ooollleeeaaann pipes, it is pronounced more like illen.
It's clearly a joke.
Uilleann is the Gaelic word for elbow as this is a bellows driven set of pipes which are clearly different to mouth blown bagpipes, peace to all..
118 people have no sense of humour.
Uilleann pipers are a strange breed. We have to be...As a fellow kiwi I feel it's ok to say this lad is awesomely in a league of his own. Go Jeff!!!
Watching him put the chanter on knocking the reed on the stock is so painful.
Love the Dreads !
Haa, great humour :o) Just what the world needs: Music and smiles. What a great character you are!
Can I borrow you next time I go hunting? Definitely sounded like some poor animal in distress. Great video!
Captain Jack sparrow throttling a goat
You say they're faulty ! Price tag is still on them, so go and return them and swap them for a tin whistle, or a plastic trumpet.
Sounds beautiful
I am going to petition NPU (the Irish Pipers Society) to change the official pronunciation from illin to OOOlean. It is much more satisfying to say.
I'll check in later. In 21 years.
mate you made me piss myself...very funny

Happy days !
"ILLIN PIPES" is the correct term/pronunciation for Uillean Pipes.
I laughed so !@#$ing hard when I watched this. I love this guy I wish he lived next door to me. I bet it is even funnier after a puff of cheeba
"LOU REED!" nice
They're Uilleann (ill-an) not oolian, and just call them Uilleann pipes, not Uillean bagpipes,
+Caoimhe k This was meant to be a funny video, I'm quite sure he knows this.
"OOOhlieann bagpipes" hahahah
This is fantastic! Sounded like someone trying to kill a goose with flatulence. Brilliant.
It takes a while to create a continuous and steady sound.
Jeff, you're a natural and don't let anyone tell you otherwise - maith thu!😁
awesome dreadlocks man

The drones look like mest up trumpet
What do you want to bet that he turned this into a bong? The Pakistani in Sialkot who crapped out this wall hanger junk set was high too.
Now, understand just how correct "oolliann" is for pronunciation.
