- The Nearness of You -- Arnett Cobb 1982
This clip is from a concert in Berlin in 1982 featuring the original Texas tenor saxophonists. Arnett Cobb's solo piece Misty is accompanied by pianist Wild Bill Davis, bassist Bernard Upsom and drummer Frankie Dunlop. During some of the background riffs he is joined by Illinois Jacquet and Buddy Tate on tenor saxes.
Arnett Cobb (1918--1989)was born in Houston, Texas. He replaced Illinois Jacquet in Lionel Hampton's band in 1942, staying with Hampton until 1947.
Cobb then started his own seven-piece band, but suffered a serious illness in 1950, which necessitated spinal surgery. Although he re-formed the band on his recovery, in 1956 its success was again interrupted, this time by a car crash. This had long term effects on his health, involving periods in hospital, and making him permanently reliant on crutches; nevertheless, Cobb worked as a soloist through the 1970s and 1980s in the U.S. and Europe.
POUR MOI: ARNETT FUT LE PLUS GRAND TENOR SAX, DE TOUS LES TEMPS !!! SON EXPRESSIVITÉ TONALE, SON LYRISME ET AUSSI, SA CAPACITÉ D'ABSTRACTION MÉLODIQUE, SONT GÉNIALES !!! MERICI POUR LA VIDEO. DIRECTEMENT DE SALVADOR-BRASIL = AUTOUMN 2023.
Age tries to still the magic flowing out of Cobb but fails....broken physically, on crutches, he produces sounds to gladden the heart and make your day. Hail the King of the tenor sax!.....( amongst other of course! )
You didnt see him perform, after he sat on his stool, cuz one leg was way shorter that the other, you felt it all over. TOTAL soul in his tone. it was like the horn was really part of him.Austin in the the late 70s. one of the most soulful performers I EVER saw!

A saxual orgasmic ending.WOW
Everybody: this is not 'Misty', it is 'The Nearness Of You', composed by Hoagy Carmichael.

Absolutely unbelievable !!!! The end is incredible, there is more soul, feeling, fire and passion in that old man hurt by life than in all tenors today.... A music & life lesson !
I met Cobb in his later years, well aware of his reputation having so many of his LP's. I closed my eyes to listen, seeing him in pain and listened to the magic pour from the bell of his horn. A master among so many of them . We who appreciate jazz as a fine art are surely blessed
Quel son !!! Quelle générosité artistique !! Love Arnett Cobb and Illinois Jacquet !!!
Never spoken a word of Teutisch language, but when it comes about Mr. Arnette Cobb I understand we both like it. Verbotten!
One of my heroes. Beautiful.🎷❣️
those texas tenors are the best. saw this cat at the spectrum in montreal a few years ago, he was special.

MY GOD...this is misty!!!its soo wonderful..its to different...
Misty or The Nearness of You.Just 👍 GREAT!!!
Nobody has commented that the poor chap is supported by crutches. Great sound in the Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins tradition. Good to see such an enthusiastic and young audience.
Maybe you the only one who trades the magic for the obvious.
Kereen, smooth, elegan 👍
Best finish in sax history
Nearness of you, such a great tune.
Gob.Shite. I'd be glad to hear anything other than the bleeding sound of my sorrow! Outside of the composition at hand, played marvelously. Bon vivant!
Artista de verdade não se deixa esmorecer! ESPETACULAR!
The guy plays superbly white on crutches . Kudos!

Arnett Cobb.....the rest is jazz history.
This song is THE NEARNESS OF YOU
What'll ya have?
So much WOOOW
He's playing "The Nearness of You" . It has, of course, many of the same notes as "Misty"
You're a f*****' encyclopedia?!
@@jamesbns7261lol...no, he is just Russian, Vladimir from Russia!
As Ronnie Scott used to say.......regularly
@@MrBoybergs You're right, Ronnie was my friend and I stole it from him..(:))
ha ha. good one!
Saw this amazing gentleman at Ronnie Sotts Jazz club, London back in the early 80s(ish). At one point he stopped the whole band because he fluffed an altissimo note in the middle of a tune. It was (intentionally on his part) hilarious to watch him make the band go back 8 bars so he could go at it again (with success). Great musician and he seemed like a lovely, mild mannered guy aswell.
Arnett Cobb I believe played with Duke Ellington in 1945-46.
I like his quote from "The Peanuts Vendor"!
I was going to mention that he's playing the changes to "The Nearness Of You", not "Misty" . . . seconding an earlier comment below.
The Nearness of You
Cobb had a Houston connection. I saw him many times, oddly enough, at an oyster bar/ seafood restaurant called Huber's.
He was always ill, but a great talent who never got his due, IMHO.
gran pa
Wow
"The Nearness of You". Very similar chord progression (different key) as Misty. Bridge and last A is different.
❤️👏👏👏☝️
hoooo a sax in all his moods!
mucho corazon ¡¡¡¡¡
Song is incorrectly labeled as Misty. Should be The Nearness of YOU
What!!?!?.playing enough to wipe away the competition, and on crutches!!,good grief
His sax is as expressive as Billie Holiday, naughty but suave....
.
Very Big tenor sax
Fantastic clip, thanks for posting. One correction: the title of this song is not 'Misty' but 'The Nearness Of You'. He played it very often at the end of his career.
My God How Delicious.
We the senior generation grew up among Giants , now the midgets are among us (rap).
because rap is the only other form of music
Miles Barnett today's music sucks
Dear Admin, please correct the title of the song !!!
Antonio Ha
I thought this was in f****** CASABLANCA!
Cobb was a great grandstander but he was extremely popular .Not the most photogenic guy in the world.
otto link user
Be Bop would be hated by the Country/Rock crowd...
what for a Genre of Jazz is this?
swing ballad with a lot of RnB phrases in his solo
